Yes, so 9M in the middle is worth more than 10+M in most other cities. Nobody is giving him more than 11M, even teams with tons of cap space.

Hanifin is only 27, Montour had barely played any playoff games by then. Hanifin is coming into his prime right now, and might even get better. I don't think it's fair to write his playoff level off at 27.
I don't think Hanifin or Montour are worth more than Ekbkads 7.5

9mil is enough for Zito to not sign Reinhart because he's not going to leave +$10mil in total contract size on the table if he can get a better deal from somewhere else. imo this is where the respect-thing that Zito mentions every once in a while when he's asked about contract extensions comes into play... he's not going to low ball his players.

Hanifin is a younger player who may not develop into a playoff stud like Montour. If his in his prime now then there's not much runway left for him to improve.

I would feel much better about Monty with another run, but that may price him off the team. He is much more likely to be highly overpaid in free agency than Ekblad IMO.

The market from Reinhart is probably a little softer than you think it is, IMO.

We'll find out.

Zito is not low balling Reino. Barkov, the team's best player, makes 10. Tkachuk, a Hart Finalist, makes 9.5.

This is what I'm talking about. Montour only has one long run under his belt. Luckily for him, it was a good one. Hanifin has more games played, but also more opportunity to make mistakes. You think every playoff game Gretzky or Lemieux played was a good one? Too early to completely write off Hanifin in the playoffs, give him a chance. Especially on a deeper D than he's usually had in Calgary, where he usually had to be THE guy.

He has more runway to improve than Monty does.

Why? So that the Panthers might get an extra two or three years out of him when their window of contending have already closed five, six years from now? Nah, you stick with the sure thing and let some other team figure out how to get Hanifin to another level.

We can sign Reino for $8-9M for 8 years and it'll be the equivalent to some other team offering $10-11M for 7 years when you taking into account taxes. Plus Viola can front load contract and Florida is just a great place to play.

makes no sense to push for a guy who wants to be a Lightning. Straight up. This franchise is past the point of asking players to please sign with us. We are what we are and have established ourselves as a destination.

He wants to be a Lightning? f*** him go to Tampa. Direct your attention towards someone who wants to be with us. The track record is there now. We get players fixed and paid.

Montour was a no one floundering in Buffalo. Forsling was a waiver pick up. Both of these guys are about to get seriously paid.

Monty is not a sure thing either. He's had one good long playoff run, and before Florida, he hadn't been in the playoffs in years. In 21 and 22 he was okay but not anything special. Hanifin is an overall better player.

The Panthers are also in Florida. Hanifin might come here, make friends and fall in love with the team/area. Players who get acquired at the deadline extend with that team all the time, even if it wasn't their original preferred destination. We have great golf too. It also prevents Hanifin from helping Tampa for 8 years

Tampa is in no position to trade for or sign Hanifin. Thats all smoke IMO. He just wants out of Calgary.

That's my thought too.
If his ceiling is 7 years, 10mil on the market, then a 8yr x 9mil deal is 2 mil more over the lifetime.

He might want Tampa, but like you said they have less assets than we do, and no cap starting next season. I think they are trying to put together a package, because he wants them, but they also have to move money out.

It’s the press and his agents leaking things to get the ball rolling…

Hanifin was taking shots with Big Walt and Matthew last summer, tell me this kid doesn’t want to play here and would rather be in Tampa !

It is just all smoke… MAYBE Tampa is one of the teams that Hanifin’s agents told to the Flames their client would be willing to sign… But from this to « I WANT TO BE A BOLT », there is a pretty big gap IMO.
