You need somebody who can play in net for the next couple of weeks if need be. Are any of those other goalies an improvement or even a sideways deal? Is it worth messing up the chemistry of the locker room, where Khabby is well-liked, to get an extra draft pick? I don't think so.

I don't know, depends on the value I guess, but I don't think it "messes" with things as much as some like to make it out. He's a 40 year old goaltender, getting value in a trade is a win in itself.

With pitkanen seriously hurt will Jim Rutherford call OIL GM on Ryan Whitney? Of course he would
1st round pick is my price. Okay, conditional 1st if CAR makes the playoffs. If they don't, two 2nds.

I know he doesn't necessarily fit but of the players available, I'd love to see the Oilers land Pominville. Throw him on the wing with Horcoff and Yakupov and we suddenly have a potentially dynamic line.

Disagree. Dirty playesr can go work at McDonalds and leave the NHL.

Here's a question to pose for you:

If the Ducks (who play us three times) or Canucks (who play us two more times) grab Torres, would you have a different opinion?

I'd rather grab Torres first, because things are going to get physical, and we don't want the dirty player taking out our guys.

He fits if you move Hemsky in the offseason (cap reasons), and yes that would be a dynamic line, and it would put another veteran leader in the locker room.

Sure, ideally you'd like all dirty players out of the game but it's not going to happen. Btw Torres said he would be doing "hard labour" if he wasn't a hockey player so no McDonald's.

It's a business. Most of the players recognize Khabi's time in Edmonton is done. Khabi for Scrivens + sounds decent. Even if the plus is only a third rounder.

If Dubnyk goes down the Oilers have no shot in the playoffs. Khabi is really only valuable to give a goalie a night off. Not something you want to do, but maybe that's what the Leafs think they need behind Reimer.

I dont get the idea of trading Whitney for assets when we have noone better than him in the pipeline (immediately, and healthy), and people are begging for us to trade some 2nd's and B prospects (the return we'd be lucky to get) to add for a playoff push.

Trading him only makes sense if we first have another d-man coming in.

Nope. Let them have him. He's a liability and a piece of trash. Let them suffer the consequences of the penalty kill.

I agree it's not going to happen. Doesn't mean I want scum like him infecting the team. Particularly since we just got rid of one of those bozos with Eager being gone.

Fistric, Potter, Peckham.

Do they move the puck like Whitney? Well maybe only Potter, but we almost have a surplus here. Teubert is almost good enough to also be included in this conversation.

If we can grab a 2nd or 3rd round pick, I'm moving him. The only worry I have is the dressing room, but if we still add a player then the message remains the same on playoffs.

He's not going to be here come July 5, and we don't know if we'll be using him by May 5. All eight teams in the playoffs are going to be incredibly hard to leap frog other than possibly Detroit.

We might suffer the consequences when his penalty is a headshot against Eberle or Hall or RNH or Schultz or whoever. He's already hit Ebs before.

The Pitkanen injury is huge. Whitney for at least a 1st rounder and even then I'd balk considering our thin puck-moving blue.

More from Matheson:

"If Steve Tambellini’s cell-phone wasn’t ringing shortly after Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Joni Pitkanen suffered a serious leg injury on an icing race for the puck Tuesday night — when is the NHL going to wake up and go to no-touch? — then Jim Rutherford isn’t doing his job.

Knowing Rutherford for some 20 years, he is a pro-active NHL general manager. With Pitkanen, the onetime Oiler D-man,badly hurt (ankle, three months), then the Hurricanes are going to need Ryan Whitney.

I know the Oilers seem to be in a let’s-not-shuffle-the-deck mood with their lineup because they are solidly in a playoff race, and Tambellini might want to send a strong message to his players that he isn’t sending players away.

But again, with the vastly underrated minute-muncher Pitkanen done for the season after losing an edge in his race with Troy Brouwer, they need a defenceman and Whitney, whose play has improved, would certainly appear to be the necessary replacement.

A puck-mover for a puck-mover, so maybe Tambellini will at least have to listen.

If there are two second-round draft picks in play–Carolina is looking to move blueliner Jamie McBain, too– doesn’t he have to see what’s on Rutherford’s mind?"

I'm surprised we're interested in Torres. IIRC, at the start of the rebuild, he was one of the guys that was moved out of the team because he was deemed a problem child wasn't he? I can't remember if it was under Lowe or Tambo, but regardless, I'm surprised they are interested in him considering they saw him in that way.

Have it your way if you like I'd rather bring a gun to a gun fight. Watching kevin bieksa run around a couple nights ago showed the need for some dirty.

I wonder, much like Dan Cleary, if he's grown up along the way.

The only problem with that is I think CAR is reluctant to make a such big move and then miss the playoffs. That's why I said conditional 1st. But yeah, if they're desperate, you make 'em pay through the nose.

For what it's worth as well, Scrivens is a local boy, Spruce Grove kid.

Something around Khabby for Scrivens would be a great deal, if we could get it done.

McBain + 2nd 2013 for Whitney + 3rd 2014

Then Jones + Belanger + 2nd 2013 for Ott.

Hall - RNH - Eberle
Paajarvi - Gagner - Yakupov
Hartikainen - Horcoff - Hemsky
Brown - Ott - Smyth/Petrell

Smid - Petry
Schultz - Schultz
Fistric - McBain

Dubnyk
Scrivens

Just that easy ;)

Part of why we moved him was because Gilbert Brule was very promising at the time, it was hard to pass up on him.

It was quite awhile ago at this point. Could also have been a case of the team being very interested in Brule.

I wouldn't be against bringing Torres back. He is a more effective ES player than Jones imo. Same amount of offense but a more in your face style of play. You get Torres to replace him at ES and then you start one of Paajarvi or Hall or RNH on the PK. Some of these kids are going to need to figure out how to do it sooner or later.

Awesome to hear from a media source. I personally think we make good trading partners and wouldn't be disappointed if we could get a deal done around McBain and Whitney.
