I think you guys are undervaluing McBain. I could be totally wrong on this but I'd be shocked if he only goes for a 2nd round draft pick. He hasn't really developed like expected but he's still only 25, has size, and has some untapped offensive potential.

If it really came down to a 2nd round draft pick + marginal prospect, I'd totally be in favour of that. Heck, I'd still be in favour of bringing in Jokinen. He'd be a good fit on our third "scoring" line and he is good in the faceoff circle too. If Ruutu was somehow available, I'd definitely look at him instead - the guy has had injury problems this year but he plays the exact style of game we need and he was relatively healthy for 3 of the last 4 seasons.

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Paajarvi-Gagner-Hemsky
Jokinen/Ruutu-Horcoff-Yakupov
Smyth-Belanger-Jones
Brown-Petrell

That looks a lot better than me and the depth would be key when we make it to the playoffs. :)

Don't want that poison near the team anymore. I hope we can somehow unload him or just buy him out this summer. Smyth has been better at center than him beside winning faceoffs. The best thing Belanger has done for us is winning the faceoff and Yak scoring during the L.A game.

I wonder if it would be possible to deal Whitney for picks/prospects and then use those to acquire Streit with a view to re-signing him in the off-season.

Ruutu's injured again, FWIW, not likely scratched for trade purposes. Also Westgarth has been a frequent healthy scratch on a team who traded assets for him, he would be Darcy Hordichuk all over again.

Several teams will be disappointed when NYI holds on to D Mark Streit. Likely get a shot at him on July 1 as UFA however. #TradeTracker

Moving Nick Schultz in the Streit deal would also give us the leg room to add his contract next season. Whitney's a UFA anyway.

From NYI's perspective, they'd be adding a veteran d-man on a lower salary who can keep them in the hunt for a playoff spot this year. Add a couple picks and you could convice them, IMO.

Besides, I honestly believe Whitney's turned a corner and management has seen it. He could be used as depth next season if he were willing to take a sweetheart deal to stay.

I wouldn't mind something like that.

I think we'd almost have to move Nick Schultz if we wanted Streit after this year anyway too.

If Streit wants close to $5M, we can't have Schultz's $3.5M on the third pair.

This is crazy talk, but acquiring both Streit and McBain would go a long way in creating a changing of the guard in the defence.

Whether Tambellini would have the balls to pull off something of that magnitude is another story. But when you consider the lack of quality free agents this summer, perhaps now is the time to start thinking ahead for next season.

Flipping Nick Schultz and picks for Streit would be a dream for this board.

I know Garth Snow is a terrible GM but this is the equivalent of the Oilers in 2007 being in 8th place at the trade deadline and trading captain Jason Smith for a bum d-man and picks.

Just think about that for a second.

Agreed.

I'm thinking that at $3.5M per we should probably move Schultz anyway.

Like you said, that's too rich for a 3rd pairing and that's where he's going to fit on the depth chart if we pick someone else up on the left side.

Edit: I wonder if Schultz would have any value on the market right now.

If Jason Smith's an impending UFA asking for the moon, you'd have to think about that for a second.

After all the drama surrounding him being benched a few times, and a few of his quotes, there is no way Whitney is re signing in Edmonton on a sweetheart deal like Smid did.

Gagner may leave some money on the table to stay here though.

I wonder what the "appropriate" deal for Whitney is if you re-sign him?

I'm thinking a 2 yr term between $2-3M per, anything more and it's too much. I would love to see Gagner get done here soon.

I think it would be pretty easy to move Schultz, obviously Nick, at the draft if a team is looking for a relatively cheap, solid defensive guy (yeah I know).

At the draft you could probably get a young forward back from a team that may not have space or need for them.

I thought he just wasn't discussing it because of the whole secrecy angle teams go for, especially close to the playoffs.

It was poor form on RK's part. Id have perferred something like: "Were hoping to get an update on him tomorrow morning."
