I'm really curious for the reason why Rantanen didn't sign in Carolina, but did in Dallas. If Carolina was offering 13-14 mil then state tax isn't it, and I think that's overblown anyway.

I wonder if Rants just didn't know what he wanted until the last second, agent was like 'look, if you want an 8 year deal it's either Carolina or Dallas, you have to pick right now.'

Like I said yesterday, trading for players that have spent their entire career in one location and then unexpectedly getting traded to another is going to be a terrible first impression for the new team. It's a gut punch, for sure. Add in the norovirus and the overall lackluster play from both Rants and the team and I don't blame him for wanting to get out ASAP.

I'm generally aligned, though the bolded is probably exceptionally generous to Necas and we're only saying it because of how he's produced next to Mackinnon, I actually thought you were talking about Rantanen and mixing the trades up the way others here are doing before I re-read.

The question of whether this is the right asset mix for this team is different than whether the trade were fair or whether we won or lost them or whatever. If you want to make the argument we're a worse roster right now on paper than on Jan 24, I'm all ears on that, Necas is the best player in the final in/out equation once you cancel out Rantanen from both sides. I suppose that then this all becomes a consistency test for some posters here - was this our contending year or wasn't it?

That said, I'd be thrilled to flip some of these new assets for another piece. Dobson is #1 on my wishlist. Go wreak havoc with your new stuff Tulsky.
Dobson in for one of the picks and Burns out would help the sting.

Fwiw I'm not saying it regarding his fit with Mac alone. He was pacing at that level here early in the season and had shown PPG+ level scoring well before that even within Rod's system which is notoriously defense first. Sure it's bias on my part but Necas is a top line asset quite easily and a legit all star caliber player.

What we got out of it so far is not an all star level return unless you're a rebuilding team, which we aren't.

The whiplash I’m getting reading these comments is wild. 90% of this board thinks this team isn’t a cup contender this year. They trade Rantanen for a 22 year old right handed center and two 1st round picks and everyone doesn’t like it because it doesn’t make them a better team now? Which is it? What do you want them to do?
This team isn’t going to be legit contenders without a paradigm shift with leadership so you’re technically correct which is the best kind of correct. There’s always next year which should be a trademark of the modern day Hurricanes organization

Why am I getting these when I try to like your guy's posts?

I mean I fully believe that with Nikishin and Morrow stepping in next year we're going to be right back into the contender window, and have routinely said as much. This year was a lull year and it was all about stepping up and positioning ourselves for the future.

Stankoven and 2 1sts (if they aren't flipped) does very little to help what could and should be a contending team next year, If anything, Stank only adds to our current profile (undersized, skilled, but can't score) and personally I don't think that's what we needed at all.

I do find it funny that many analysts are also framing this as a loss for the Canes because this was the "last best chance to win a cup, they're supposed to be going for it" kind of year...this was always the transition year.

We spent all summer hearing about the talent going out the door and even predictions of missing the playoffs. But no one seems to remember the boatload of cap space will be available this summer and the young guys like Nikishin/Morrow/Nadeau that are about to bolster the lineup on ELCs. But that doesn't confirm their priors.

But they are going to have an assload of cap space and first round picks burning a hole in their pocket in the offseason. If this isn’t a cup contender this year by our own admission there’s no reason to rush to do something in the next hour.

I mean we'll have a lot of cap space, but is there going to be the talent in FA that we will want to use it on?

Man, Dallas is everything I wish this team was right now.

Side note: Jalen Brunson's ankle probably exploded last night, too, so please respect my privacy at this time.

We are making the playoffs but we're a first round out most likely. 2nd at best. Getting younger and our 2c while Blake is coming up and having a shitpile of cap space? I'll take it. Nachos was gone next year anyway.

I bet stank comes in and tears it up if he doesn't get stuck on kks wing or some bullshit.

Everyone knows i hate rentals and think they're a waste..

If rantanen came in here and tore it up like a 13m asset then f*** yes. He didn't. He came in and looked like shit. Idgaf about the flu. He looked like shit on barkovs wing in the 4n too. We still needed a 2c. We're gonna need some defense and damn good defense next year. Someone with term. And another scoring top six.

No. We're retooling for another window which we aren't in this year. Playoffs yes. Legit contender? No.

We needed a young 2c and we just got it. Go get more scoring in ufa with all that cap space.
And an RD to pair with Slavin.

And maybe Gibson instead of Andersen, or a different goalie trade (Demko?). Most of the UFA options are off the market now.

They have the draft capital to do a lot this offseason either in trades or FA signings.
