Listen I love Knies, but he has become overrated among our fanbase (understandably so)
He's pacing for ~60 points and 30 goals while shooting an unsustainable shooting % playing beside 2 of the most elite players in hockey. If he's the piece that can get you a 50 point, 100 point player who produces in the playoffs you need to do that
Knies right now is fantastic value, we'll see how people feel about him making 7.5-8 million in a couple years
Why would Knies take a bridge? It's more risk for him and he's already proven he's a powerforward who will score beside your best playersIn a vaccuum sure, but it’s not that simple.
Knies bridged at something like 5M is much better for us than Rantanen at 13-14M
And get upset when most refuse to pay for the upgrade here.Same thing happened the last 3 years. They refuse to stay up with the times and tech.
They get another chance this year to show they can play and if they get pushed out again, fans and media will be talking about the need for massive changes, and management will likely extend Marner and Tavares with an overpay and they’ll all get another chance next spring.
Or Rielly. That’s 61% of their cap space who are proven losers.Or Willie. He's won exactly nothing.
Everything doesn't exist in a vacuum though. If Treliving proposes a 1st & Minten, etc. it also comes with cost of retention.Cowan, Minten, Danford a 2nd and 3rd this year a 1st and 3rd next year.
The team has assets to make a deal if it wants to
I really like Knies as a player but I had no idea his shooting % was so high.
Yea, but having said that they have to take care of their own business. 5 wins is the most they ever got in one playoff season. Just get it done. There is not a lot of faith in them, investing more assets into this core. Look at how many assets were already spent and they did not do shit.
If we are getting Rantanen (and we're not), we're making the decision to move on from Marner, not Knies or JT.Listen I love Knies, but he has become overrated among our fanbase (understandably so)

You don’t build a team at the trade deadline. You add pieces to an already great team to take a run
The leafs have far too many issues to successfully add here without destroying their draft/prospect pool.
They need a big summer of key additions and subtractions and reset it like Florida did a few years back.
Out:
Reilly
Domi
Reaves
Dewar
One of Marner or Tavares
Jarnkrok
That’s over $40 million in cap space freed up!!!!
In:
- a solid 3-4 defenseman or two
- 2-3 big forwards with scoring ability - Bennet as an example
- a solid 3rd line Center (if you keep Tavares)
Bonus:
- don’t spend to the cap and limit yourself. Keep some space to acquire assets when teams need to move pieces at a bargain. Give yourself $5 million as a buffer.
Agreed. Some short-term excitement likely won't end up being worth having any long-term regret. The panic here is nuts... You have to see it from Brad's side. Still lots of attractive pieces available on the board(Murphy, Ferraro, Laughton,Rackall, Donato) and other teams are overpaying for depth players(Novak, Beauvillier, Walman)
Eventually prices have to drop as Buyers blow their wad on cheaper pieces.
Lol @tsn. You take Rantanen every day over the week over Marner.
Treliving might look at this group and decide the sunk cost might not be worth it. He’s in Year 2 of his era, not the fin de siècle of the Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander era. I don’t necessarily think that’s a loser mentality. Maybe he looks at this group and doesn’t like what he sees?
Byram or Clarke 100%There's goes my Knies for Byram and Cozens idea.....
Still hoping we get Byram somehow
