Its a tad early to say its unlikely he'll accomplish that considering that finals run itself was unlikely and not expected. Also I'd argue Bergevin got a dream scenario considering he had a top 3 pick and a young core of Price, Subban and Pacioretty. Beaulieu and Tinordi were recent 1st round picks too l that offered promise. I just find it hard to look at a rebuild about 2.5 seasons in and make a conclusion on the future.

The only thing thats drastically different at the start of their tenue is that the veteran core was better and accordingly the team did much better. But we have to remember that 2013 season was flukey, the expectation was to rebuild in 2013 and Bergevin pivoted when the team showed more promise. That wasn't the case last season when the team showed it clearly needed to keep rebuilding.
I agree, but we don't know what Bergevin would've done if he had been allowed to do a full rebuild. We saw what Hughes did, he traded all of our good players on good contracts for decent value while keeping the bad players on bad contracts

I don't understand the "it's a lottery" argument. The lottery only accounts for 2 spots in the draft. Other than that, you position yourself to draft based on your position. If you're last, the worst you can draft is 3rd, and that's unlikely to occur. Winning unnecessary games screws you in the longterm.
We finished 5th. The chances to win the lottery are still fairly good at that position. Yes KH could have traded Suzuki and Guhle and Caufield for a 25% chance to get Bedard instead of 8.5%. Not sure it would have been a good thing personally.

With the sheer number of picks Hughes has available to him in the next two drafts, he needs to be able to count on the best scouts money can buy.
Those aren't just for scouting. We ha e trade pieces now. Summer of 2025 is gonna be unreal with our trade bait via picks and cap space!

Teravainen too.

But yeah in terms of scorers. If you can get reinhart and montour as a duo, you do it.
Honestly I don't think Reinhart will make it to free agency and if he does, he's going to cost 11+ per year.

I would rather settle for Guentzel or Marchessault as UFA.

1. Not really, not compared to everyone else's top-6
How can we know this?

Roy's a raw rookie. Dach has shown he can be a really effective player and the first line has done really well in the back end and that's with CC not being able to score. Plus we'll have a draft this year where we'll add a Catton, Eiserman or Lidstrom.

It's way, way too early to say our top six isn't good enough. I still believe that CC is a 40-50 goal guy. We'll see.
2. Question marks about what he can do at the NHL level as a 160lb dman. I love Hutson, will he be a top pairing guy or a sheltered PP merchant?
Either way, it's still a huge win for us. He's a 60th overall. Even if he doesn't pan out, we have a deep group of blueliners waiting in the wings. He's a huge bonus and could turn into a legit star. Even if he busts though, it still looks like we got the best player in the draft.
3. Because we need a legit #1 who can play 60 games, not someone who has emerged as "pretty decent". Reinbacher has had a bad D+1 in Europe.
Kaiden Ghule is probably a future number one. Then you've got RB and Hutson who aren't even in the league yet. Then you've got a whole whack of other guys who are looking good. Plus we'll have trade pieces in Matheson and Savard in the coming years.

Please show me five other teams with a better blueline group coming up.
4. We did that the last 2 drafts and both players we acquired suffered serious injuries. I hope we trade for actually good players too.
The Dach story was tragic and bad luck. But he's not done. Newhook seems unaffected and I'm not worried about him in the least. And given the depth we have coming to forward Newhook might even wind up on the 3rd line.
5. We're about 3 years in now, we should be seeing some tangible results. Suzuki and Slaf look good this year, Caufield and Guhle not so much. Our core hasn't progressed as expected due to injuries and coaching (my opinion).
Dach's injury hurt us or we'd be further ahead. No doubt about that.

But so many guys weren't even on the radar two years ago. Hutson? He was a 60th overall. Roy was a longshot. RB didn't even exist in the system.

Carey Price was a question mark when he was drafted. Subban wasn't supposed to be a star... it takes time for talent to emerge.

That's why the scoring by committee strategy fails, because it's harder to score in the playoffs, so if you have a bunch of guys that are 50 point players during the regular season, they will not score in the playoffs.

If you offensive core is a bunch of 50pts guys, you never had the committee with a reasonable chance to achieve success.

Oh boy. Why do I always have to repost this?

We did not need to do all that:

-Trade Allen instead of resigning him in 2022.
-Play Primeau More in 22-23.
-Trade Anderson at the 2022 draft for a pick.
-Don't overplay Montembeault this year.
-Don't play injured Caufield and Injured Monahan when they're injured
-Trade Monahan last year after he's actually able to recover

Etc.

Jury's still out on Slaf, Jury's still out on Caufield, Suzuki is good but not dominant, and 2nd line center on an elite team, Dach can't stay healthy as you say.

When I say top end talent, I mean dominant players.
Which dominant player available do you want?

Nothing in that help us finish lower. There's no guarantee Primeau would have been worse than Allen as he's been better than Allen this year. Jake Allen sucked the last two seasons. Anderson is awful trading him away makes the team better likely.

If you want to beat Chicago you have to Chicago. Trade Caufied and Suzuki like they traded Dach and Debrincat.

Its wild that two years post-Bergevin at least a 3rd of the fanbase seems to want to go back to his lack of a vision approach.
I can understand the 'we don't have a superstar' criticism to an extent. We didn't get Bedard or Fantilly or whatever...

But that doesn't mean we don't have stars/superstars in our lineup coming up. It's simply too early to know.

I'm also old enough to remember. They were both beasts. Well, Naslund was a little beast.
Of course they were. But they weren't superstars.

We don't know what Slaf will be. I still expect CC to be a 40 goal guy at least. We've got Roy who has done nothing but overproduce... and then we might add a guy like freaking Esierman who I think will be a 50 goal guy.

You're comparing cup winning teams to the 2nd youngest club in the league. We don't know how good these guys will be. But to write off a guy like say... Hutson - it's insane. The guy has absolutely crushed everything and yet people are saying he's a gaint question mark. I mean come on.

I don't have an issue with skepticism that we're not there yet. Well, okay fine. That doesn't mean we're not on the right track or that we're not a million miles better than we were.
