It's not pointless. Allen is losing more games than the other two goalies. And the other two goalies are sheltered. It's Primeau 1st season in the NHL and Montembeault 1st season as a number 1. Sheltering them for a year is not bad.

He's a 33 year old D-man who struggles at playing a high pace. I'm not sure if I was a contender that I'd want to trade a 1st who last made the playoffs years ago and was playing 3rd pair minutes. Even with retention.

I think he's vastly better than most team's bottom pairing dmen and can step in as a #4 comfortably if there is an injury. Worse players have gotten traded for that.
