Nemec could easily just be the other David Jiricek, and all the more suspect if NJ actually made him available.

Mercer is just a Frost, Farabee level young forward with mid first round pedigree, nothing special.

It would be different if we were prying loose Luke Hughes or something and actually getting that potentially foundational defenseman on the back end.
Nemec is so much better than Jiricek offensively its not even remotely close.

I really fail to see why people undervalue Nemec so much. Sheldon "i refuse to play young defenseman" Keefe is his coach. His offensive opportunities have been blocked by Hughes and Hamilton. He has attached an anchor in Kastelic, Siegenthaler, and Dillon to all of those guys similar to how Holl played a billion minutes for us. Its a dude who in the year of 2025-26 had Connor freaking Brown as his 5th most played forward at 5v5 and a permanent spot on the PP. Give Nemec actual minutes with a real 2-way defenseman and a PP1 season.

I'd still want to hold off on Knies for him as I think NJ, and specifically Keefe tanked his value, but I'd love to get a deal done somehow.

Everyone who keeps mentioning Raddysh is out to lunch especially if were replacing Rielly with him.

Raddysh has only played 3 full seasons vs Riellys 13.....also Morgan has never had a defeman like Hedman to take the #1 role and mentor him.

Raddysh is also 30 years old only two years younger then Rielly.....not much of a difference only Moragn has shown consistency over 13-seasons besides missing a few games too injuries we have no idea what Raddysh will offer and I would not be giving him a 4-6 year contract that pays more then all of our current defeman.

Also the reason Ekmam-Larsson & Tanev are more injury prone is because they play hard minutes mostly in there end and block/hit
way more then your average defseman.

Raddysh season lastyear was inflated because Hedman was injured for the majority of the season btw.

Raddysh averages 60-hits per game & 80-blocked shots vs Rielly at 63-hits & 101-blocked shots....keep in mind Rielly missed 115-games vs Raddysh at 18-games.

We need a legit number one & slot Rielly as number two that will take the load off Morgan and he will be able to preform better.

Also Morgan has always had decent playoff stats....every team that gets to the finals has two offensively minded D.

I would generally take Simon Nemec on, no problem. But he can’t be the centerpiece coming back for same aged player who is thriving. So he’s a Knies non starter.

For us to move Knies, I feel like we ought to be packaging him off to get into the Jake Sanderson stratosphere. Like on the other side of the quality for quantity equation. Like why else do it?

To Toronto-
4th overall pick
Anton Frondell
Artyom Levshunov

To Chicago-
Matthews Knies
Brandon Carlo
Dakota Joshua
Colorado 1st Round Pick

There’s no great value in unspent cap space either, especially in an inflationary environment where you have too many dollars chasing after not enough talent.

Ive been very clear I only trade Knies for an overpay, and even an overpay likely isnt enough.

My disagreement is solely based on the fact I think Nemec is good, and has the potential to be a #1. Someone needs to get him out of NJ to get that value because he isn't getting it there, and I hope its us.

I kinda like:
Knies
Robertson
Col First 2027
2026 3rd

4AO
Frondell
Rintzel

Think the value is closish
Would be fun if Stenberg fell to 4th

McKenna-Matthews-X(Tuch)
Stenberg-Frondell-Nylander
Cowan-Tavares-X(McMann/Kapanen)

McCabe-X(Raddysh/Carlson)
OEL-Rinzel
Andrae-Tanev

Wouldn’t the 12th overall and another player be coming in the deal? It depends if you also feel that 12th will land you something important.

Again I have them better than you although still not good. 85-89 points.
They played close to that pace for most of last year heading into the Olympic break.
And that was with a bunch of injuries and a terrible coach.
I think McKenna has a small but positive impact mostly on the powerplay.
And we have the cap space to build on that.

Trading Knies and taking a big step back in the desperate hope that the guys you bring in will someday be better is far from the only or best way to improve the team
Im not convinced the new coach is better than the old coach.

The injuries were real but all of Knies, Tavares and Nylander produced above expectations.

Stolarz, Matthews and Tanev injuries really hurt them. I’m reluctant to count on any of them to be healthy next year.

If McKenna plays on the PP then you’re likely taking off one of Tavares or Knies thus reducing their impact.

We have to see what they do in the next 3 weeks. Knies impact last year was <1 win above replacement. Trading Knies for 4OA+Rinzel (as an example) would be offset by signing McMann or Bunting to replace Knies (please no more LS LW though).

I challenged an NJD fan on this very point recently.

If we drafted Chase Reid with the 2OA pick this June, and things were generally going according to script and he was developing into a foundational piece, would you be tossing his name around in the trade market 4 years from now? The answer is hell no.

That's all you need to know about Nemec. Love to get him as a reclamation, but not as loose change coming back for Knies.
Are these trade proposals by NJ fans, or are other fans trying to get him while his value is down?

Anyway, the original thought was Nemec + 12oa + something else, so it's not just him.

Or you take Malholtra or Carels and can still deal Carlo at the deadline.

Then think about TLK and Danford 2/3 years away.

Problem is there isnt a 3rd piece that would put it over the top. I see Nemec's value around a mid-to-late 1st. That plus 12th OA is nice, but I dont see someone there that fills the difference. Bratt, Hughes, Hughes, Hischier are obviously way too much. Mercer is.. meh. Besides that its like? Silayev? Idk I don't pull the trigger on any of that.
