Carels could bust.

Again, 4th overalls only in like 4-5 scenarios in the last 15 years turned out better than Knies

You want magic beans and a 3rd line centre for Knies?

Where's the rest of it?

I believe in Oliver Moore as a future 2C and 4th pick is likely Chase Reid who the leafs were really hoping to get before they won the lottery, which makes me think he's probably legit. I think that a very good return for Knies.

If you're making a futures trade for Knies, you have to assume the leafs management really likes those futures as top 6 forwards and top 4 d-men.

The betting sites say Chase Reid is the favorite to get picked at #2

You believing in Moore at 2C doesn't make the projection of 3C less likely. He lacks finishing ability.

Reid is a mystery box.

Basically you cannot have any mystery or chance or guesswork around any Knies trade.

Thomas Harley for example, you know pretty much exactly what you're getting. There can be no risk in 2-3 years that you've given away a top line power forward for nothing or half the true value.

If Reid does go 2 and Malhotra 3, then I don't believe Chicago will do that trade.

I understand your position. If you don't believe in those prospects, it doesn't make sense and makes you think it's awful. The same way we all cringed at the Montreal rumour. The same way some people are reacting to the Woll trade. I happen to have more faith in Moore and Reid. And if a Knies trade happens, it would likely involve prospects that we haven't even considered, we have to realize that the leafs believe in the ceilings of those kids.

Friedman said that the trade with the Flyers makes one thing for certain...the Leafs apparently have a lot of balls in the air right now.

This could be an insane off-season in terms of action. Have no idea if we're going win or lose the transactions but its gonna be crazy. Chayka is going to be cooking

I don't understand why the Woll trade indicates that, not that I don't believe the leafs are exploring many things. They had a logjam at goalie. Even if they run 3 goalies, the starts would likely be 70 for the tandem and 10 for the 3rd goalie. Are they really going to have Hildeby sitting in the pressbox for 70 games?

With Ross Colton gone, another player of similar caliber I would target...Ryan Hartman. Minnesota has to clear cap-space for Hughes and even Dylan Larkin or Trochek (who they are targeting)

Gavin McKenna - Auston Matthews - XXX
Mathew Knies - John Tavares - William Nylander
Boone Jenner - Ryan Hartman - Eason Cowan
Dakota Joshua - Colton Sissons - Lorentz/Marlie

The only futures based trade I could do with Chicago is an overpayment on their part, I would do 4 and Frondell, they wouldn't, they shouldn't either but if they're hell bent on Knies, that's the price.

Short of that trade, I am not doing the deal.

I wouldn't slot Andrae on the 2nd pair. You have to assume he is a good 3rd pair d-man until he proves himself in Toronto.
I think people are saying he has 2nd pairing potential but not a chance he gets 2nd pairing minutes to start off. Most definitely in the 3rd pairing and that's IF he wins that spot in training camp. There will be competition

This is how I see the pairings potentially (Assuming Reilly is gone)

Oliver Ekman-Larrsson - Darren Raddysh/Rasmus Andersson
Jake McCabe - Chris Tanev
Emil Andrae - Brandon Carlo

This wasn't friedman speculating whether or not it indicates anything. This was him saying he's heard after the trade the Leafs have a lot of moving pieces and balls in the air right now

Except that Reid or Carels are D prospects that the club hasn't had a whiff at in 30+ years. I don't think they would do it but this takes them back to Gary Nylund vs Scott Stevens. If its a Heiskenan/Makar year and they have ignored that to retain a 70pt winger who only maxes out as a complimentary talent thats as bad a loss. A number 1 D man is the single hardest position to fill. Right now Knies may never be worth more because he has had a pass because of the Leafs toilet year, If it turns out he can only excel with two star forwards beside him that is not a trade off for a high end D +. I get wwhat you are saying,. A bird in the hand right? But they may never have a shot at a D like this year in the forseeable future. Its only unrealistic if they aren't prepared to do anything to slow the retool which may well be the case.

Why?

I wouldnt mins the below trades now that we moved Woll + Benoit

1. McCabe for Nikushkin + 2027 3rd + 2026 3rd (would do one less 3rd if need be)

2. Rielly for Haltunen + 2026 4th + maybe another 4th (doing 1 for now)

3. Lorentz for Lyubshkin + 2027 4th + 2026 5th

We add:

Top 9 W who plays RW, has speed and size and a fairly manageable deal, a depth serviceable dman for 1 year, a low shot prospect who can be a AHL top 9er and then 1 - 26 4th + 1 - 27 4th + 1 - 26 3rd + 1 - 26 5th, and that assumes only 1 3rd and 1 4th in McCabe and Rielly deal.

UFA moves after:

Need to be super aggresive and get your targets to sign.

1. Jenner - 4.5M x 4
2. Raddysh - 7.75Mx7
3. Carlson - 10.5M x 2
4. Tolvonen - 4.25Mx4
5. Kapanen - 3.25Mx4

roster next year:

Mckenna - Matthews - Knies
Nikushkin - Tavares - Nylander
Cowan - Jenner - Tolvonen
Joshua - Quillan - Kapanen

Raddysh - Carlson
OEL - Carlo
Andrae - Tanev

Stolarz
Hidelby

I forgot to deal Robertson and Maccelli but that is likely 2 more 3rds we can add

Wonder what teams in the West would want Rielly? I can see San Jose, Anaheim, Calgary, LA, Edmonton, Winnipeg as potential fits.
