Except we tried winning with that same core for 9 years and they never even got close to achieving significant success that such a talented core should've achieved. Now that they're all 10 years older and minus Marner, but plus Werenski, Raddysh and a few other guys that's going to suddenly turn them into real cup contender? I seriously doubt it.
And? The point is we're doing it again regardless if you or me likes it, so buckle up for the ride and get used to it lol

Zach Werenski rejected trade to Stars, but Maple Leafs, Lightning are high on his list

TSN

June 30, 2026

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss the latest on Columbus defenceman Zach Werenski. LeBrun shares that the reigning Norris Trophy winner rejected a trade to the Stars that would've included Thomas Harley going back to Columbus, and that the Lightning and Maple Leafs are high on Werenski's wish list.

We would have by far the strongest defence we have ever had during that time. Not even close.
Werenski and Raddysh would probably be the 2 best Dmen we have had.
Sure our defense would be greatly improved, but that doesn't change the fact that most of our core that couldn't win with almost a decade of trying in the playoffs is still here. Until that changes, then the Leafs will continue to not do much in the playoffs especially when they're all a decade older.

Took you 4 posts to get the age right of the player you're shit talking. "CBJ isn't desperate for bodies to fill out a roster" Yeah, that's why they want to trade for players with upside from a team like Tampa with the NHL's best coach. "Groulx isn't James' level." << You didn't bold that part...wonder why

Can you explain the historical statistical difference between a 28 year old Defenseman with one full regular season and a 29 year old, or are we just resorting to red herrings because you're really .. really....really bad at debating?

What upside, which players are they specifically targeting from Tampa? Source?

What the f*** does Cooper being the NHL's best coach and "Groulx not being Janes' level" (which is a real low bar btw) have to do with my argument?

I don't mean to be rude ...but about this posting thing ...it might not be your forte.

And even if I were to even hypothetically grant all of the above....in what world can the Leafs not offer a superior NHL ready player?

Seems like the only thing that can save this team from disaster is other teams having more assets and being more attractive destinations for guys like Werenski and other players so that Chayka is prevented from making these mistakes himself.

Not really. If he was a pending UFA that might be true. He's signed for 2 more seasons. Columbus doesn't have to trade him. They can tell him, well I guess you're spending the next 2 years of your life and career in Columbus cause we're not trading you for pennies on the dollar.
Then he walks for nothing in two years.

The logic here is interesting.

Just a month or so back when AM seems to be wanting out. Most here kept saying we need to trade him or he will walk for nothing in 2 yrs…..
When it comes to Werenski who might really want to play for the Leafs only. Let’s give CBJ a great deal to get Werenski bc he can’t play hardball with CBJ as he has 2 yrs left on his contract.

So far one journalist put out Werenski “might be willing to play for the Leafs.” And there was no credible source behind it. Where are you getting he only wants to play for the Leafs? Thats fantasy.

The option is to be horrible and give away your next two 1st round picks.
Then watch Matthew’s walk.
Or
Door number two, try to compete now and try to convince AM to stay.

Hard to convince someone. I remember Tavares with the Isles, who wanted to go home. I hope we don't make the same mistake and let him walk for free. He needs to sign way before the TDL 27. If not trade him. That's life as a pro.

There was a Jeremy Roenick clip I saw yesterday where he talked about almost signing with Calgary and that he wanted to play in a Canadian market and feel the atmosphere.

Maybe the same thing is happening with Werenski.

So instead of Werenski, lets trot the corpse of Rielly. That's what will make us winners. Genius i tell you that 🤔

He will want to sign here then go to the states ?

Because they are assets. Every asset that improves helps your team in some way. Sometimes its to be traded for a different asset in an area of need like Woll was. Sometimes its to get a greater asset by being part of a package.

It's funny everyone want the Leaf's GM to be ruthless like Vegas or cycle assets like Carolina. Then when it looks like that is about to happen everyone freaks out and comments like above start to appear. Can't trade him he is a 23 year old power winger, Can't trade him we developed him. They are all assets.

We need to lose the emotions behind being a fan and realize if we want to have a Cup winning team our management needs to look at the players as assets.

Of course, but you need to play him nhl to increase his value. Hildeby has already proven that he is good enough for nhl, so play him more and let him shine and if you want trade him. In goal is the place to earn with assets.

This shit is insane. Woke up and saw there was 20 something new pages in this thread after I fell asleep tonight so I knew some big news must have dropped.

Can’t believe we actually have a shot at Werenski. It’s getting tougher to not become overly excited!

Ok so if those are the teams. Then what?

It's knies vs moser. Who has more value

If Toronto did jt

McKenna. Matthews. Xxxxx
Xxxxx. Tavares. Willy
Cxxxxxxx. Xxxxxxxx. Cowan
Joshua. Xxxxxxx. Lorentz

Werenski Tanev
McCabe. Raddysh
Oel. Andra

Probably Bob and Stolarz?

We need 3 more forward.

Kane/janner/arvidsosn? Like we can't get 5 ufas.

Trade Matthews and Rielly and use those assets to keep building with the young guys we already have. Trying to build around 3/4 of the core that has failed for 9 consecutive playoffs is straight up STUPID. Giving up a large chunk of what's left of our good young players and picks is straight up INSANITY.

At least the Oilers can make the case to try and run it back with their core who have had back to back Stanley Cup finals appearances. Why in the HELL would you want to continue to try and build around a core that has had two 2nd round appearances in nearly a decade?? Pure insantiy.

When you have a chance to bring in an elite #1D and the reigning Norris winner you do it. I would trade anyone in the organization not named Matthews for a chance to bring in Werenski. I don't think it should even be a discussion.

If we are getting Bob and Zack, we better be offloading Stolarz and Rielly. We never seem to have these high profil D
Simmons is kissing Chayka's ass if this thing gets done 🤣🤣🤣

I think theres a massive difference playing for the Leafs or even the Habs and the rest of the Canadian teams

Look at the Leafs for instance. Close to the US, huge market, large city, tons of money invested in the players, world class facilities and medical staff

I know its not a no tax state with amazing weather but thats still a very attractive destination even if you are American

The issue is not who but how many. A team with a very light cupboard is usually not inclined to go all-in on a guy with just 2 years left. You could argue that Knies, Cowan, and Danford cumulatively may be more important for this team especially with the ELCs of Cowan and Danford. We all want Werenski, but the price is likely prohibitive compared to waiting 2 years.

Bob would be a mistake because we can't earn with him. But we could earn with Hildeby, AA, Ersson ... because they are young and still didn't reach their ceiling.
Bob is old, nobody gives us a 1st rd pick for him. Bob is wasted money and a wasted roster spot and his last stats are a joke.
