GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
We should be getting some good value here in the Rielly deal, ideally it's done ASAP

If winnipeg is considering a rebuild I would float Knies for Morrissey

Honestly question which is worse;

Byram for 4th overall plus

Or

Carlo for Minten and 1st

At least with the Carlo trade, you still have hope that the first is a late one.
Lmao you cant be serious. The Byram deal is 10x worse.

I understand we may have lost the Carlo trade, but lets stop overreacting on how bad it was. Minten is going to be a glorified 3rd line center in todays league. We have no idea how the future 1st will pan out. We clearly plan on contending, so the 1st may be a late one.

Draft is in Buffalo, no? Make a huge spectacle of it

Wouldn't be surprised if a Sabres deal is unveiled on Friday, with Bettman announcing it -> probably blow the roof off the Keybank Center

We should sell Tanev. His body is not holding up well at all, and he will hit the IR within the first 10 games of the season. Its inevitable

If we're really trading Carlo, we need to find another RD ASAP, because after Raddysh, we have no one except for a 50yr old Tanev

Starting to wonder if Carlo can net a mid 1st rounder on draft day.

Teams are throwing away draft pick like candy.

Great trade by Sabres. Going to get another good Dman in the pipeline plus freeing up cap space for Tuch.

The Blues and Caps deal is interesting.

Think Davidson is a bit scared of the draft, outside of the Bedard draft the drafts have been overall pretty bad when he's had high picks. At least he gets a 25 year old top 4 dman who can immediately step in. He better have traded for Byram with a hand shake long term agreement in place. Otherwise hes in big trouble, because this is exactly the kind of leverage Ferris loves... a young GM putting his job on the line, paying huge assets for his pending UFA? Ferris will definitely take the most advantage of that and work to get a severe overpayment.

I think that contract would be quite hard to move. Signed till he is 42, long injury history and missed most of last year.
Then again the NHL employs idiots like Kyle Davidson and Stan Bowman so who knows

He's got NMC. So probably unlikely.

What are you even talking about?

In the four seasons before his injury last season he played 82, 65, 75, and 75 games.

The leafs will pay that.
Chayka keeps talking about getting younger but we are linked to Bob and Gudas? A reporter asked Chayka if he intentionally is keeping info from leaking... so it'd clear reporters are finding it difficult to get accurate leaf information now, compared to years past.

Maybe we should try to play Tanev less. Save him for playoffs. 3rd pairing, no PK if we can help it? Seems like his leadership is just as valuable to the team as his on ice play.

According to Wheeler, it's possible that #4 is going to be moved again. Chicago wanted Stenberg, but they believe he's going 2nd after the Eklund trade. Malhotra to #3 has pretty much been speculated all year.

4. Buffalo Sabres: Chase Reid, RHD, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)

Two things before we get to the Sabres’ options at No. 4:
  1. I believe the Blackhawks were zeroed in on Stenberg throughout this process and that once the Sharks made the Eklund trade to acquire No. 9, it became clear to them that they were taking Stenberg at No. 2 and a defenseman at No. 9. That conclusion led them to pivot as quickly as they did today to pushing for Bowen Byram, who gives them an immediate PPQB to play with Connor Bedard as they push to get better. I don’t think they were prepared to wait two years for Reid, and maybe another two years for him to figure it out in the NHL. That puts you into 2030 and beyond before you realize the impact of the pick. Byram gives them a 25-year-old left-shot D now.
  2. When I reached out for intel into who the Sabres might consider at No. 4, I got this back from a league source: “Think they might use it for something.” So this circus might not be done. I’ve been hearing the Penguins have been aggressive in trying to move up as well.
Now, if they do make the pick and the forwards go 1-2-3 (and everything I’ve gathered has led me to believe that’s the most likely outcome), I’d bet that they’ll take one of the D, and Reid and Carels are the most likely. And if it’s Reid, could righty Radim Mrtka, already in trade rumors, be on his way out as well?

People assume this trade is horrible value wise for Chicago, but not necessarily. If you go by the old adage of the team that got the best player wins - clearly Chicago wins. I think people here were suspecting Chase Reid to be NHL ready next season - he may take 4 or so years until he's contributing and Buffalo is loaded on defenceman. I think they're likely swapping that pick for forward help especially if it goes McKenna-Stenberg-Malhotra as projected.

Call the Blues one final time, Knies for ALL their 1sts (4) + cap dump
Take it or leave it, Now that's what i call being aggresive 😎

I wouldnt be shocked to see knies + Rielly + Col 1st for Misa + 9th overall + graf. Probably a pipe dream but I'd have said the same regarding the Byram trade before it happened as well.
