I vehemently disagree. The production is there but Tavares leaves me wanting more, and at his age it’s a lot to ask of him to be a 2C on a Cup contender.
If JT’s minutes are properly managed he can be effect for the entire season, moving him to the 3rd line C spot achieves this, might be the best 3rd line C in the league?

If you're looking for someone that can play that physical style and handle themselves with the fisticuffs, We got a guy internally in Landon Sim who fits the bill.
He needs another year in the AHL if think, to be NHL ready.

When you seek a response for the physicality, you can’t be losing the goal scoring game, or you’ve lost already.

Hopefully the Tkachuk go clown show from the beginning d the year. That isn’t a style you can maintain for 82 games and the playoffs.

Friedman said on his podcast this morning he is hearing Nichushkins name out there and they are looking to clear some room. I would think Colorado would think long and hard if the Leafs offered their '27 1st back to them for him. I'd need to dig into his numbers more but on a whim if think about it here.
His personal issues would give me slight pause in this market as well. Deep due diligence would need to be done.

Blockbuster proposal

To Toronto-
Wyatt Johnston
Thomas Harley
Mavrik Bourque
2027 1st Round Pick

To Dallas-
Auston Matthews
Matthew Knies
Nick Robertson

Maybe let's start using 1sts for actual difference makers like Florida does instead of wasting them on middle 6 players.

Knies hasn’t displayed any sort of mean streak.
Active players with more PPG and more hits per game than Knies by his age last season:

Brady Tkachuk
Alex Ovechkin
Gabriel Landeskog

Sure he doesn't hit guys high and get suspended. But he is extremely physical and productive. He just does it clean.

That's a fair point. I guess my retort would be he has been an elite complimentary piece on route to a cup before and could be a good buy low. But yeah, I'd tend to agree with your point.

Not much interest moving assets for another left shot winger

Those assets are needed for other positions

Michael McLeod would be free and exactly the kind of centre that we need:

- Excellent on faceoffs
- Very good defensively
- Plays PK
- Very good skater
- Good hands and capable of producing

Not sure of his status regarding NHL availability though... has he been through a screening by the big bad Bettman?

Edit: Apparently, he would be eligible: Following his acquittal, the NHL reviewed the matter and officially cleared him to return to NHL play on December 1, 2025.

Sens are shopping 9th + 25th overall.
They have Cozens playing on the wing.

If they target someone like J Robertson maybe a combo of Avs 1st/Carlo/N Robertson+ can land Cozens?

They have the assets to land Knies as well, but I’d rather not move him (especially to a division rival). But something like 9th + Cozens + Yakemchuk/25th overall would be enough to satisfy the rumoured asking price.
Ha! You beat me to it.

I talked to my Sens buddy in Ottawa yesterday. He's very knowledgable about all things Sens and he told me that, indeed, Cozens is on the block.

Yes, if J Rob goes to Ottawa that does open a good opportunity for us to send N Rob there. I would hope your above proposal lands Cozens. Since he's signed long-term, maybe we have to add something more to this proposal (maybe Hildeby like someone said). I would love Cozens on this team. His brother is great friends with McKenna too.

Also, I would absolutely jump on that Knies trade. I love it. 9th overall (Bjork or Smits?), Cozens (very good 2C), and Yakemchuk (strong potential to be a top pairing D). Both Yakemchuk and Cozens are physical "dogs" too.

He's under contract to a team in Russia for another year or two. I think there would have to be a mutual termination of the contract, which would be unlikely, the team would have to buy him out, or he'd have to buy out his contract himself.

While a good contender for the role, you'd have to ask if the team could put up with the inevitable social storm that would result.

And of the two, Pettersson or McLeod, I'd lean towards McLeod and use the cap space available for other needs. Question is, could the team, or McLeod, put up with the noise that would surround the move?

Edit: if possible, you could then add Malenstyne and Kapanen for his wingers and possess what would be the fastest line in the league, while being quite defensively responsible. I can't imagine that would be an expensive proposition.
