Receiving three 1sts in return is normally quite the haul, though maybe not as much when a team is coming off of a season in which they made the playoffs and is now trading its captain to a divisional rival. A Florida team with Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett will be a handful.

What would we trade for him though?
2027 Avs 1st is an easy inclusion. Im assuming they’d want Cowan/Danford as one of the pieces as well.

After July 1st we can sign Carlo and trade him. They are looking for a top 4 RHD with size. Maybe we can sell them there? Who knows.

Possibly Hildeby too if they want a young G behind fellow Swede Ullmark. Makes sense if the rumours are true we’re looking for another starter.

Ottawa keeps rebuilding? Or will they flip a pick or two to get a replacement?

They'll go after player(s). Fully expect J. Robertson to be high on their target list. Funny enough, also American. McTavish also played in Pembroke (CCHL and close to Ottawa), Peterborough and Hamilton in the OHL, so might be a target as well. So maybe both?

I don't understand this Sens got fleeced sentiment, based on the situation, I think they've made out quite well. They now have 3 first rounders in this draft, plus they have two future picks to play with, lots of options, lots of cap space. It's up the GM to make it work, but the pieces are there. I hate the Sens too, but seems a good haul to me.
Three 1sts including the upcoming 9th overall can be a good batch of futures (in spite of having to wait a few years for that final 1st and also the 2nd round pick). They just might wish to parlay something here that can provide a bit more in the way of immediate help though.

Hmm this woulda still happened if we ended trading marner for picks. We'd have picks and mckenna. Letting marner just walk was the dumbest mistake that our gms have been doing consistently

We did get Roy for him which eventually got us a first so you can say we used Marner as an own rental and somehow got a 1st+McKenna from the fallout so its even better.

I will say I'm quite pleased with the start of our offseason. That being said we will need to be smart with the cap space - I'd rather look to add a 3c, another RW.

Move one of Robertson/Maccelli for picks whoever is worth more

-----------------

Gavin Mckenna - Auston Matthews - Easton Cowan
Matthew Knies - John Tavares - William Nylander
UFA (Bunting/Mikheyev) - x (Trade piece) - one of Robertson/Maccelli
Steven Lorentz - x (Quillian/Groulx/UFA like Blueger) - Dakota Joshua
Groulx/Quillian

Jake Mccabe - Chris Tanev
OEL - Darren Raddysh
Morgan Rielly - Brandon Carlo
Emil Andrae

Stolarz
Hildeby
Stop Gap Goalie

Right shot forwards be damned!

Three 1st round picks (including #9 in this year's deep draft) and a 2nd round pick is an incredible return for a player of Brady Tkachuk's calibre.

It's not just about futures. The Sens just added a boatload of assets and trade capital that they can convert into immediate roster upgrades.

The only "problem" being this is a trade which requires a follow-up trade (for which there is plenty of time) in order to remove the sting of trading away the captain purely for futures when the team is evidently trying to be competitive. We're essentially in agreement here.

I like that logic and I'll go with that from now on. Marner dictated his terms as he was allowed to do of course, might have been a cup winner had he chose differently (although they got stankhoven who was a beast so hard to say how it all woulda' worked). It is what it is. As his NMC was kicking in we were in the middle of changing GM's, timing was all over crappy. Era over we can and should get better and get over it.

Probably best to see what the return turns out to be.

9.

Björck definitely lacks the size teams crave in a center. But that hasn’t slowed him down – he’s absolutely fearless. He hasn’t found a player he wasn’t afraid to go up against at the World Championship as Sweden’s No. 1 center. We’ve seen him win battles against guys like Stanley Cup champion Ryan O’Reilly (6-foot-1, 216 pounds), David Tomasek (6-foot-2, 209 pounds) and even 6-foot-8 monster Malte Setkov. It’s like watching a younger Zach Benson. Björck’s shot is incredibly deceptive, especially on the power play. He doesn’t give you much to work with if you’re a goalie – and it’s because he doesn’t need to. Quick, accurate and always in a dangerous spot.

Our division is going to be stacked again next year.

We still need to make some quality additions if we want to contend.
We’re not competing next year. The Panthers just added a young captain for basically nothing after winning a Stanley cup a season ago. Their team is also packed with tough players and got even tougher. The Leafs stand no chance.

If I’m a division team with older players I’m looking at fully rebuilding and hoping the Panthers players age out.

To make it worse, we’re talking about trading the only player on the team who can play that style lol

He's not going to walk. When that Chris Johnston story came out I was very adamant that it was complete BS. I wasn't saying that because I was guessing. I've been told flat out that Matthews wants to extend here, and the leafs have known that for some time.
Things change, his contract expires in 2 years and he could walk. It’s not a fact that he will be here longer than that. Is he happy and wants to play here today? Sure that’s possible, but I won’t believe he’s extending until he actually extends.

People are making this about Americans as if Marner didn't do the same as a Canadian. Larkin is American in Detroit.

It's just that US based teams has been a lot stronger in recent years, players want to go on great teams (not just good teams) and it's a perfect storm that his brother is there. Nobody is asking to be traded to Seattle. Caufield and Hutson don't have a problem signing long-term in Montreal. Ottawa might trade for Jason Robertson.

If the Leafs don't improve, a lot of players will want to bail. It's the cyclical aspect of sports.
C'mon, the inverse wasn't true before. Hey guys, I'm demanding a trade to Calgary or Toronto? WTF are we talking about here?

Be honest. Is this one of the best off season or what?

Just to see Sens falling apart alone is a treat.

So if we trade Rielly, anyone else concerned with the footspeed of our defence?

Waiting for the rest of the question.

If they don't trade Rielly is anyone concerned with their ability to defend?

I think there are a couple defenders who'll be available in free agency, teams do trades, and there are always prospects.

I could also see a scenario for Rielly is 2nd. or 3rd. pairing on the Leafs.

Because a player of his caliber, pedigree and importance to said team probably needs to return more than 2x1st round picks, one barely in the top 10. The other 1st round pick is 3 years from now, which is top 10 protected (Treliving couldn't even get ours to be top 10 protected for the Carlo debacle....)

They got the best they could, but doesn't change that it wasn't very good. I'd be livid if we got that for Knies, or Matthews for that matter. But it's better than nothing I guess.

Yep.

And the Sens as an organization/ownership group also don't seem to have any interest in going through another yet another rebuild. They're going to have to trade those picks pretty quickly if they want to try and hunt for the playoffs this year
