Matthews will stay if fans rally around him this season. If they completely turn on him, for whatever reason, he’s gone.

There’s ego in his failures and lack of accountability for sure. But he does genuinely want to win here. When fans stop supporting him there’s clearly motive him for to want to leave

I agree with the assessment but I don't like how non leadership guys like Nylander and Knies have used their online voices to show how close they are to Toronto and the community, the Marlies run, the lottery win and the captain stays cool and aloof through all of it. These things don't matter but they kind of matter if you want the fanbase to actually like you and believe in your commitment to the team.

Look, no matter how much I hate Brady Tkachuk, he's been one of the best creators of individual xG his entire career. He's a fantastic player.

f*** Ottawa for bending to his will and taking a garbage return, and f*** Florida for being in our division, having no tax, and being the biggest pieces of shit in the league.

I think Brady will under deliver in Florida, have some emotional spastic breakdowns and injury problems, the Tkachuk family will continue to create random friction in the room.

My point is, if Matthews wants to be popular in the market he has to spend a reasonable amount of effort to make that connection to the fanbase. The fact is he's a declining power in the NHL, has brought very little success to the market and likes to stand aloof and above like the golden child - it doesn't fly after two down years and public pissing and moaning about the state of the franchise.

Exciting things have been happening for Toronto. You gotta show excitement about that if you want people to be excited about you.
