I think if Werenski is willing to waive to us, he's open and willing to sign an extension, unless things really go south. But, then we have a lot of problems. But, sometimes you have to take a risk like that. My guess is with us being close to family and Matthews being here are the primary selling points, on top of we are a franchise that will spend. Especially if he's turning down Dallas. If we can sign Werenski to a retirement type contract extension a year from now, then that changes the equation entirely.
The problem is there's no guarantees. If he leaves and we end up recouping lesser assets in return, it would be a massive loss for the franchise.
The Raps moving for Kawhi in 2018, or the Jays moving Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez for Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar. While, the risk scares me, sometimes fortune favors the bold. Losing Knies would hurt, but this isn't some futures based package like the deal that idiot Treliving had set up and to a division rival no less. We are getting a guy coming off a Norris season, who is probably a top 3 defender in the league. It could blow up in our faces where we are trading both Matthews, Werenski, and hell maybe even Nylander waives to get out at that point in 12 months, but sometimes you just have to go all-in. The real gamble at this point is what player is Auston Matthews currently, and how quickly can McKenna be good.
