GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

I'd have a lot of time for Vince Dunn. He's not young anymore, but I think he'd be a huge addition if you can get him to an extension. I haven't seen any talks about him there and I'd be surprised if he was pumped to stick around that team.

Wright, 7th and Dunn (with extension) and then throw a Carlo their way or something. Just spitballin' here.
I get Dunn, I truly do. He skates well, transitions the puck well, defense is mostly fine. Ive just always found the hype is way higher than the results (besides his awesome 22-23 season) and I don't think he's a guy I'd bet on being the main 'get' in a Knies trade.

If they wanted to deal him, Id want us to be in on it, but honestly, why would they trade their only good defenseman?

That's a fair point but they are at a crossroads. They want to make a splash so they might have to chase down players that can't really say no them and hope they can develop them further or improve with those players.

They really should just commit to rebuilding instead of going after guys like Marchment, McMann, Samoskevich, etc. but seems like they want to improve.

Sure; but they'd be much better going after a guy who's a bit higher risk/higher reward; versus Knies who is very much "what you see is what you get".

Knies is 23 years old. He's definitely not "what you see is what you get". He's got another gear of improvement. But that's part of the risk you take with younger options. He's signed long-term and no trade protection... so that's a huge thing for a team that has had a hard time attractive top options.

Because if he doesn't want to re-sign there and the Leafs are one of the few teams he'd go to... they may be in a pickle.

This just proves Robertson is trying to go to a Stanley Cup Contender...along with the 15M

Vegas, Florida, Colorado and Edmonton are all cap-strapped (going off recent Stanley Cup finalists).

Does he want Tampa? Does he want Carolina?

The thing with Tampa & Carolina - they both have pretty rigid cap structures and a culture of "if you're going to play here, it's not neccessarily for top $".

Tampa can make $15m work, but I suspect they're probably going to stop around $12 or $13m, so that they can justify Kucherov there.

Carolina has less of that problem because everyone is under contract, but it just doesn't seem like a Carolina thing to pay Robertson $15m when Aho is under $10m.

Meh. I'd rather play on a better team and make a bit less than play for an org going nowhere and make an absolute killing.

12x8 is just as much generational wealth as 15x8
The thing is, there's a team out there that will offer 15M and be a Stanley Cup contender.

I dont know who, but Robertson clearly has someone in mind

My comment was not meant to suggest that he doesn't have room to grow; it's that as he grows, it's likely not going to be into somebody that's a true offensive driver and can make offence happen on his own. He's the guy to make space for the creative ones.

That's fine but he could fall anywhere between a Tuch to Rantanen. He's not Jason Robertson good offensively, but he's a top line player that kills penalties and chips in 30 goals, maybe more if he takes a big step.
