GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

This will age like spoiled milk once we're watching Mo's defensive blunders game in, game out imo.
Defensive blunders occur when you ask players to play a style they cannot. Berube ruined Reilly's reputation. I bet you will see the light if he sticks around.

My prediction is 15+ goals and 50+ assists for Reilly if he sticks around.

The problem is that I think they were actually playing Berube's system to a tee, which is why he never changed anything.

Sounds like no deal or urgency in trading Rielly or Knies. It was all smoke and mirrors.

How the hell is is smoke and mirrors? And why would there be any deal or urgency? At no point has the team ever said they had a deal or were in a rush to deal either of those two. In fact, with Knies they specifically said they weren't unless someone overpaid.

Maybe.

On the other hand, a 3rd pairing Mo with OEL might be a pleasant change if we can get the bodies to actually play him 3rd pairing minutes. Still need to move Carlo (we gotta be done with this guy - rip the bandaid off that disaster trade) and get another top 4 guy to make that work.

I still think the best thing for Mo and the Leafs would be a change of scenery but at the same time I really like the guy.

That would be insane production considering he won’t get much PP time.
Werenski had 60 even strength points last year and even at his best Moe ain’t Z

It'll be tough to do that unless Raddysh struggles and Rielly is back to his #1pp spot. Hard to imagine lol

With that said, where he can turn heads is improving his 5 on 5 play, more notably driving the puck and not getting shelled in shot attempts. He'll never be a defensive stalwart but he won't be the first or last player to improve drastically after a coaching + roster change around him.

I think the Chayka comments about Rielly for example are a smoke screen, I don't take them at face value.

In terms of if it actually happens? No, I don't want to see Morgan Rielly back.

Mo playing further down is fine, he just cannot be the #1 or log 22 minutes a game.

valid point until you ask yourself is it a good idea to spend 7.5 mil on a third pairing D man? Well, is it?

What does that else does that cap space get you?
There probably aren’t 10 UFAs I’d be interested in and not all of them would want to sign here.
Trades can happen but again how many guys are really available and with the prices the last few days how many can we really afford to be in on. Cap space isn’t as big of a deal as it was a couple years ago

cap space is priceless, it's a long season and having the flexibility to acquire players because of said space is far better than wishing you weren't up against the cap.

Cap space isn’t what it once was. It’s rising quicker than we can spend it at this point. And more teams will go into the season with space so less guys will be dumped for cap reasons and there will be more teams bidding for the few guys that are

I get the love, Mo was a great team guy when he wasn't a liability to the team, but I can't be the only one who's memory isn't so short that I can recall a blooper reel of the ineptitude Mo put on displace last season? For the record no coach, or change of system can hide said ineptitude.

“Zach Werenski is becoming an issue in Columbus the same way Brady Tkachuk became an issue in Ottawa. A trade involving Werenski may or may not happen this week, but I'm prepared to have him on my trade board through the summer and into next season until a deal is made or, perhaps, an extension is signed, which he's not eligible to do until 2027.

There is a link to Toronto here and it's that Werenski's agent, Judd Moldaver, is the same as Auston Matthews' and they both have contracts expiring in two years. The first question is: would Werenski be willing to come to Toronto? The second question is, if so, what kind of offer would it take from the Leafs to get him from Columbus? Would a deal around Matthew Knies and Colorado's 2027 first-round pick be a good place to start? Does prospect defenceman Ben Danford excite anyone after his performance in the Calder Cup playoffs? Would the Jackets want to explore having Rielly in this package? If Werenski is willing to come up north and Columbus acts as quickly as Ottawa did with Tkachuk, this could be a go big or go home chance for Toronto.”

Everyone thinks they're rich until they can't afford what they want.

What do we currently want that we can’t afford?
Who is available that we aren’t pursuing for cap reasons?
We have nearly 20M in cap space right now. The FA class is weak af and we don’t have the futures to make most of the trades that went down this week.
We could trade roster players but that would mean more cap going out to do it.

I’m not against trading Rielly but his cap hit isn’t really one of the reasons
