Hypothetically speaking, if Arizona gets 1st overall and they offer it to us for Auston Matthews. Do we do it?

depends on if Matthews wants to sign.
Shane Wright will not be Matthews by all indications. He is more likely to be a Tavares with better defence.

if Matthews wants out. 100%.

Keep going.
Don't think he has that much value

Your entering McDavid/Draisaitl/Kuch value tier if your adding additional pieces

Maybe we could get Guenther if the leafs sucked this year and sold him right now where he as basically 3 years of control, however leafs are a top 7 team in the NHL and contending so that won't happen

Matthews only gets dealt in the summer if we unfortunately lose in the 1st round gain and new managment comes in and funds matthews isn't likely to sign after this deal in 2 years

He's a player that has been on pace for 50 goals twice if it weren't for COVID shortened seasons and hasn't entered his prime. He would also single handedly save that franchise.

Keep going.
2 years of control doesn't return that much value imo

He'd be getting back 1st OA which is Shane Wright who is projected between a Tyler Seguin and John Tavares level player.

That is a premium asset in itself with 7 years of cost control at the minimum

On top of that a guy before this year was playing like a top pairing defenseman and a great goal scorer at that. Has a great contract ND great physical tools. Chychuran would be a great addition to the blue line and allow us to move Muzzin if his decline in play doesn't rebound

Hayton is the iffy piece as he's a former 5th OA but his NHL play has been poor albeit in small sample sizes on a terrible team. He could be swapped our with Guenther whose the 9th OA in last years draft.

If we dealt him now I'd ask for both Guenther and Hayton along with their 2022 1st with condition it is 1st OA if it's not we get their 2022 1st along with their 2023 1st which is only top 1 protected and chychuran

We'd get a type of package you might be looking for of we dealt him now since he has more years of control left

Could come away with

Hayton
Guenther
Chychuran

2022 1st round pick in range of 1st OA to 3rd OA

2023 1st (from 2nd overall and onwards) if the 2022 1st isn't 1st OA and Shane Wright

2023 1st (from 2nd overall and onwards) if the 2022 1st isn't 1st OA and Shane Wright
Hayton looks like he's going to be waiver fodder in a year.

2022 1st overall (Wright)
Chychrun
Guenther
2023 1st round pick

I'd consider this considering the cap space could be used as well. And this is all under the assumption that it is guaranteed 1st overall.

If we lose in the first round again, I’d think about moving Matthews. He’s not the problem, but at that point the core would have proven beyond any doubt that they cannot get it done, and I might blow it up and rebuild.

I would do th 1st and 11th overall selections this year as well as Barrett Hayton

Coming away with Wright, Jiricek and Hayton is a good haul

Given Zona is in a rebuild, I'd say they wouldn't/shouldn't move those two 1st rounders but they might for Matty. I'd hate to move Matty but such a trade could fast track a retool (if they bust in the playoffs again) and get them a ton of cap relief.

Most players hit their prime for production right around Matthews age so im not expecting him to produce more than he is right now. That being said he won't be traded for magic brand unless the leafs horribly flame out and miss the playoffs this year and management is comepltely cleared out which would suck

The NHL seems inexplicably invested in the Phoenix market. Looking at the financial/competitive disaster it has become, I could see forces behind the scenes wanting to repatriate AM34 to Arizona with the hope of resurrecting that market. If such a thing were ever forced, and we know this can happen with star players, there is no better type of compensation than starting a package with the 1st overall pick.

A player with term tends to be my preferred target around that time too. I imagine the cost would be a 1st or its equivalent in prospect though if the player is a significant enough add with an established track record.
More like both pieces you listed, plus if they have term well need retention to make it fit. Think TB getting Blake Coleman for 50% for a season and a half (2 playoffs) it was Nolan Foote and a 1st. That’s for a third line guy/middle 6W. If we want a bonafide top 6 solution it’s those pieces + maybe ++

Change would definitely be necessary in that scenario. I'd prefer to aim for a retool though over a rebuild.
