Id be shocked if they trade Rielly at this point.
Would be a joke of a move if true.

It's better to even downgrade on Rielly but still get a top 4 for him in a trade versus using him as a own rental then losing for nothing. Defensively, the downgrade might even be an improvement with the obvious decline being in the offensive department (to be fair though, Rielly has been flop offensively two years in a row now -- at this point even Jeff Petry is a better powerplay option).

If Liljegren proves worthy of a spot this year, even bigger mistake using Rielly as a own rental because Liljegren has a transition game.

So annoying nobody has the guts to trade Rielly.

I hope the way the Leafs are playing this does not end up Hyman 2.0. I get they want the fan base to believe they are a serious contender for the cup but after last year's playoffs, they are only fooling themselves and Leaf fans drinking the Dubas/Shanny kool-aid.

Either sign him or trade him. WTF are you waiting for ??

Miller + Schneider for Rielly?
I'd do thst but don't see why the Rangers make that deal?

Trouba is already there. He's not as good as Rielly but he's making 8M and along with Fox will be one of their highest paid players

Adding Rielly when he'll want 8M will mean the Rangers can't give Laf or Kakko big deals if they break out next year.

I don't see the Rangers want 26M going to 3 d-men (Rielly, Fox, Trouba)

They would be happier to keep Schnieder who has progressed well and is dirt cheap for 3 Years once he makes the NHL and K'Miller whose a quality bottom pairing guy already and won't be looking at a big deal

TB have Hedman, McDonaugh and Sergechev. Rangers would have one of the best defenses if they added Rielly.

Difference though is Tampa gets players to take discounts and have a tax advantage which they optimize fully due to a winning culture

I like the Rangers but they have high taxes and are a choking/cursed franchise like the leafs for the most part. Tampa gets their big 3 in their contention years for barely over 20M while the Rangers big 3 would be 25-27m which is a substantial difference

The 3 would be 14+m this year. They'd be at $25m the following year assuming Rielly 8 and Fox 9.

It's simply not been Dubas' style to move out pending UFAs during the Leafs' competitive window. I fully expect they keep Rielly for the season, after which he likely walks to free agency.

Allowing Rielly to walk for nothing will be the end of Dubas. Most Leaf fans won't be happy with that outcome unless they win the Cup.

I think it's possible he's re-signed too. But Rielly walking is the more likely scenario.

If they don't win a round, it's the end of Dubas regardless, so that's not saying much.

Possible, but Rangers do seem to swing for the fences, and do strange things. Any proposal we could make, is unlikely to happen anyway.

Winning a round and losing Rielly for nothing will still be frowned upon. Said it before, come out clean and set the fans expectations and move Rielly if you do not want to sign him. Dubas may even be able to keep the flies off if they lose a round.

It will be much worse for him if they trade Rielly and go nowhere again, IMO.

Man this forum is weird. There's literally no stat that Barzal is better in but for some reason a bunch of people are just parroting 'Barzal is better than Tavares" without any real argument of any kind
Barzal is flashier. That always adds to a player's rep.

Negotiations presumably.

Unless Shanahan gets fired or he gets pressure from above, I don't see Dubas going anywhere.

You can bet the temperature will be much higher next year if they fail to get past round one. Afterall it will have been 8 years for Shanny with no playoff success.

We all know we aren't winning the cup, we may not make the playoffs . If anything we are going to squeak in the playoffs and play tbay or Florida .
Take a step back get some assets dumb management.
Good thing nothing changed in leaf land .

The only way it makes a lick of sense to trade Rielly at this stage of the off-season is if you're getting full signed value back.

Comprehensive list of reasons to trade MR for a rental price

1. The team is out of the playoff picture, or on the edge without major injury problems to blame
2. You're confident that you have an internal replacement that can do atleast 90% of the job.

Neither is the case in August.

The Leafs have run that checklist on every pending UFA and walked every one of them out the door.

The way the Leafs weren't able to play the defenseman musical chairs game this past offseason, I think the only course of action here is to sign Rielly to an extension and prolong the run time of this current group beyond this season. If they're smart, they can front load and limit the NTC, NMC commitments so they can always flip him down the line.

The all-in dynamic starting with the Barrie rental through to the all-in Hyman, Andersen year last year have really taken a lot out of the organizational reserves. What they need to do is make sure the core is intact for a few more seasons (with Rielly for now) and they can make less panicked all-in moves year to year.

What about 3, today it appears we most likely won't be able afford him like we slowly could not afford Hyman as the season wore on.

Well, that checklist would have been 50/50 on Barrie/Ceci. We were definitely on the edge. Then there were definitely reasons for being there (start under Babs/ defensive injuries) that contributed to being there, but on the other side the team had laid some real eggs and managements faith in them had been publicly shaken. But with the rest of them is was the right call. In 18,19 and 21 we were a top team that choked/lost, not a seller.

This is a tired talking point that really doesn't hold water with anyone that really follows our prospect pool. We had a lean draft this summer, but the cupboards are well still stocked. Next year is looking lean, but pulling a Sandin/SDA and Hirvonen/Niemela sequence changes that in a hurry, and we're 10 months out.
