Looks like they have 7 defenseman for the Leafs and 8 for the Marlies.

Leafs
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Liljegren
ex. Dermott

Marlies
Dahlstrom - Menell
Kivihalme - Hollowell
Rubins - Biega
ex. Kral - Duszak

All 3 of the bottom 3 NHL defenseman are cheap and can out play their role. There is about 5 defenseman on the Marlies that could see NHL minutes. The idea behind it and it has been echoed by Dubas is that they're going to try not to block Sandin and Liljegren from the NHL this season and he has followed through on that statement thus far. Sandin is in his 4th season post draft and Liljegren his 5th. If they actually need a Ben Hutton type player over Liljegren, they can simply send down Liljegren without risk of waivers and gain his cap space and parlay a late round pick into a similar player at or in advance of the deadline. That way they're not blocking their youth, but first giving them the roster room to play and earn a spot before bringing someone in from the bargain bin.

Biega has actually only seen 4 AHL games in 5 years and has been a primary NHL'er for 6 consecutive seasons. He's been an NHL defenseman and is now taking a step back in Toronto. He'd make a fine #8 and is in the mold many here desire a gritty, defensive minded depth player.

Menell has never really been given a serious look, but if he did get that chance his production indicates that he may have the potential to be able to slide his way into the NHL permanently.

Dahlstrom is essentially another Martin Marincin, but younger and with less NHL experience.

I could see another good veteran AHL contract come in to be a buffer between Kral - Duszak and the young Solar Bear defenders on AHL deals. Maybe, closer to the season when more players are willing to give up on NHL contracts.

The only thing that could throw a wrench into the defense at this point imo is a Rielly move. There hasn't been a resolution there. If he moves, a defenseman will be coming in from somewhere.

I think a major concern would be not having enough solid NHL defencemen when an injury happens this season. It would be naive to think we could get through a season with the top 4 playing all 82. You've indicated that it would be easy for the bottom pair to be interchangable, which I definitely agree with. But I think it would be too much to ask for anyone in the bottom pairing to play significant top 4 minutes. Last season, the Leafs had Bogosian as the anchor on the bottom pair, but he's been around long enough to handle time as a #4. I don't think that you could ask the same from that prospect group.

To me, I think there has to be 1 more move coming in the way of a guy like Jason Demers or Erik Gudbranson. Nothing flashy, but guys that actually averaged 17-18 minutes a night last season.

I'm totally bout that sire. You know what I'm saying. Like Gudrabson is exactly the type of a standing sucka we need... that blocka of tha thang. Hard. Big too, heavy weight. Can even throw the mits off. Hard. He still standing, what!!!

Also Demers would not be like a fool... he pretty tough, Looking the part too. He a handsome sucka. Not like gabriel or evander kane... but still aaaaaight. Tight. Like ladies might like that man. And I'm bout that!

I don’t think we need to add another D. There isn’t a massive drop off from Bogosian to Dermott IMO

maybe a depth guy like Hutton/Gudbranson max.

Wouldn't mind Hutton back but Dahlstrom/Biega can at least cover a 3rd pair spot if we get that far down the depth chart.

I have a feeling Gudbranson will still pull a dumb contract for too much money again.

Yeah, Tavares is still better than Barzal.
Barzal is one of the softest players in the league being sheltered by Trotz system. Not even a guarantee to hit 20 goals every year because he doesn't have a nose for the net like Wild Bill.

Wild Bill? Tavares name is John.

Barzal is definitely better now. He's much faster, has just as much skill and possesses the puck extremely well. The only thing Tavares has over him is faceoffs. But I'd take Barzal over either Tavares or Marner any day of the week.
Tavares had some terrible puck luck last year but his possession numbers were just as good as Barzal's in similar usage while generating more offensive opportunities and was better defensively.

We have a tendency to rip apart our own guys for the shiny toys on other teams but Tavares is still an excellent player.

lol what? Did you watch this years playoffs? Barzal is insane. JT Doesnt have it anymore but hes a solid two way scoring C.

I watched some Islanders games. He was great at taking the puck and skating in circles before ultimately giving it away.

Barzal plays for a team that focuses on defense first... no risky plays allowed. You can see how his point totals dropped from D.Weight to Trotz

Marner struggles to score himself without restrictions on his offensive creativity. Would be terrifying to see his point totals without the permission to do all his hot dog plays... that both get alot of points but also cause alot of turnovers

lol no point in arguing on internet forums but Barzal is quite a bit better than JT. Barzal is on the same level as Marner.

Barzal looks better than who he is. Barzal is not better than Tavares. Tavares by his own standard had an off year and still managed to out up decent numbers

Tavares game has declined partly due to our coach. Tavares plays a heavy game but for some reason our coach doesn't want a big forward with him.

Nylander is a great forward but he shies away from board work. So many times Tavares was left alone to fight board battles.

Barzal gets to roam around because of Martin and company. Same with McDavid. They are good skaters but nobody touches them

Tavares constantly getting hit by other teams and so called Simmonds doesn't do jack

Kassian and Josh Anderson took healthy runs at him and our so called tough guys did jack

This takes a big yikes. I think you got it backwards about who is our 4th best forward.
Despite the shitty playoffs its

Matthews
Marner

Tavares
Nylander

Expect Tavares to drop a tier below Nylander soon. Tavares is a worse regular season player than Marner by a significant amount and playoffs has 8 pts in 12 games while marner has 12 in 18 (same ppg) with marner playing 1st line competition all 3 years and JT playing 1st line comp vs Boston for the most part

Man this forum is weird. There's literally no stat that Barzal is better in but for some reason a bunch of people are just parroting 'Barzal is better than Tavares" without any real argument of any kind
Tavares become generally considered to be bad at hockey the second he signed here. Point-per-game throughout his tenure with the Leafs so far but somehow he is #bad.
