He spent time on a line with O'Reilly and Perron, clearly didn't need sheltering. He plays mostly on STL's 3rd line and they use him in a two-way role but he's played at the top of their lineup at times.

Mikheyev will walk this summer and the Leafs have an internal PK replacement in Engvall. I'd make that move for Sanford all day if he came with an extension in the 2m range. Mikheyev is an oddball fit in the bottom six and you can't build a checking line around him.
Interesting take there, care to expand on those thoughts?

Personally I'd say Mikheyev is an ideal fit for a checking line, especially with a guy like Kampf. First off he's good defensively and a primary PKer, so he can certainly help out a line defensively. On the other side of the puck I think he makes a great fit with Kampf because Kampf is a blackhole offensively so putting creative skill players with him doesn't make a lot of sense to me, neither are going to generate a lot of zone time, slot passes, quality build up to score so you aren't hurting their offensive play by putting them together. But Mikheyev's feet allows him to generate offense on his own so you'll still get some chances and offense out of that line.

It's kind of like Kapanen with us, he didn't fit in the top 6 because he doesn't use teammates well but the speed allows him to create instant offense on his own in a depth role.

That is a pretty huge contract for Kaprizov (9 x 5) but honestly they probably were going to sign him no matter what. Already lost so many players you have to stop the bleeding

Minny didn't really have any leverage in that negotiation.

Regardless their cap situation is pretty dire ...Seems like they'll be trending in mediocrity for awhile.

Ok it's not a news source. It's a blog and it's speculation.

Juicy quote:

"Look for Dermott to start the season with Rasmus Sandin on the Maple Leafs’ defense, but keep an eye on the likes of Timothy Liljegren and Kristians Rubins, who will be scratching and clawing to get into the lineup."

Kristians Rubins?

Anyway this prediction/speculation is not earth shattering. Each player makes sense.

What do you think?

He's got size, can use it when necessary, skates ok, and has a good outlet pass... kind of a safe, decent sized bottom pairing potential D man. If he continues his growth, it wouldn't be a shock to see him get a look.

He is Marincin, but without a lot of the things that made Marincin a respectable NHL option.

I think he's a better skater than marincin. More of a Holl-level skater.

With a 20-man roster, it actually could but just barely. Possible but not ideal to roll with.

If that deal actually went through though, which I'd be a huge fan of (I think the Leafs would need to add a little), I'd think a small bit of retention on DeBrusk's 1yr deal would be negotiable too.
I don't even mind doing Rielly (Ext) for Carlo and Frederic. Something around Rielly for Carlo as a base. Down the line Sandin - Carlo could be a great pairing for us.

Simmonds - Frederic - Gabriel... could be fun...

Better skater than Marincin with better puck skills.

Dubas name dropped him in the same sentence as Sandin earlier this summer when talking about prospects that will contend for spots.

The Leafs were interested in trading for him in the last year or so... Looks like we dodged a bullet.

is there any US states he wont be able to play either? this guy could end up playing minimal games for full salary. If by some miracle Red wings make the playoff i bet he gets his vax, imagine only playing half a stanley cup final becasue half the games you werent allowed to play. Obviously extremely unlikely red wings will have that dilemma

edit: The NHL better not start giving out cap relief becasue players decide not to get a vax,

They will. I read somewhere if a team suspends a player for not vaccinating the team suspends that player than they get cap relief for doing so

If it wouldn't be such a bad blow to their public image, imagine Stamkos or Hedman not getting vaccinated until the playoffs lool

Bill Daly NHL Cap Charge unvaccinated players - TSN.ca

But only 10-15 players aren't vaccinated so doubt any big time player on a contending team would be able to be used to take advantage of this rule

I think teams only get cap relief if a player opts out for the whole season due to Covid.

edit: apparently I'm wrong -- they can get relief for suspended players.

Is she just talking about preseason games in Canada? Because I was under the impression it was vaccinate or get lost for the season
