He’d be a solid 4th liner and PKer. That allows us to launch Engvall into the sun.

After that, Simmonds might be the first guy knocked out of the lineup.
I personally just don't see it. Keefe played Thornton to the detriment of the team. He's not benching a heart and soul type guy in Simmer. I think Simmonds comes back looking good this year tbh. His wrist injury really set him back. Didn't fight afterwards, and said at the end of the year how hard it is with an injury like that to get your touch back, and your hands in tight working etc. He was actually more effective when in the top 9 seeing more ice. Realistically, he's going to have to learn to thrive in a 4th line role like Spezza has been able to do. I also think for a guy with his style of game, having fans in the building will bring more out of him as well. Being able to feed off that energy with a big hit or big fight. You know us Leafs fans love to see the temperature of the game ramp up. The other important thing, I think with a guy like Ritchie playing, as well as Gabriel likely seeing at least some time in and out of the lineup, it'll bring even more out of Simmonds. We too often only bring in one guy, who feels he's gotta do it himself. That shouldn't be an issue this season. But besides my faith in Simmonds, even if he struggles..I can't see Keefe taking him out based on what I've seen from him as a coach.

Boz's pp60 was almost the same as Kerfoot's playing with vastly inferior linemates. His overall FO % was 56% and 59% in the D zone last season as well. For the right price adding him should be a no brainer.

Simmonds had a 2 week hot streak and sucked mightily the entire rest of the season, like he has done for literally years at this point

If he sucks again and Keefe hasn't got the ability to make a tough decision it's time we had a serious talk about Keefe's inability to do what's best for the team and why the hell our GM brought Simmonds back again

This isn't some form of charity, everybody in this organization needs to know you either perform or you get what's coming to you

He so soft that he makes his line mates softer.

Yet has arguably the best defensive numbers of any forward on the team and each line gets better defensively when he plays on it. Has some goal scoring ability, drives offense.

It's simply because he's big and doesnt hit that people like you don't like him. If he was 6 foot nobody would care.

You should send Dubas and Keefe an email. They don't like him either.

Why would they play a guy in 42 games of the regular season and 6 of 7 playoff games if they didn't like him?

I take Keefe's comments on this to be the truth; they think he can be more than he currently is. Now I don't think they'd mind if he was more physical, but I assume their main issue is that he doesn't impose his will offensively like he shows he is capable of at times on a consistent basis.

They tried to not play him last season, then they tried to not play him in the play-offs, and now they're trying to push him off the roster. It's pretty clear they don't like him.

Based on Dubas' trade history, I highly doubt they wanted to "push him off the roster" without him flipping him for a late pick. The moment he's over a player the guy is gone. We've seen it like 5 times.

Just because Keefe doesn't always think he's one of their best 12 forwards doesn't mean he doesn't think he can be, or is at times.

When he's not always a top 12 forward on a roster containing Joe Thornton, Wayne Simmonds, Jimmy Vesey, etc... that's very telling.

It's really not though? They had the ability to control Engvall and his minutes a lot easier than the guys you mentioned. It's a lot easier to justify benching a guy with 80GP over a guy with over 1000. Not to mention like I said, they believe Engvall can be more than he is, which is arguably the most common tactic coaches use on players: bench them to get it in their head.

Vesey they realized wasnt going to work too, so they waived him. Like I said Dubas does to players they want to get rid of.

An ugly feature of human nature is to identify and actively undermine the weakest/most-outsider/easiest-target within a group. I guess Engvall is that player this season.

As far as I'm concerned, Engvall as a 3rd liner isn't ideal yet he's not in over his head. And on paper he's going to be depth for that kind of role anyways.

What’s going to be the excuse when he’s in the press box for opening night?

Excuse? None? I just don't get why people hate him instead of pulling for a guy who actively makes the team better. He's like the one scapegoat in the bottom-6 when he's arguably as good as any of them besides Kerfoot at their respective bests.

I don’t hate him. I don’t even know him. I just think he’s a replacement level hockey player. I’d actually have him in my opening day roster, since I think he’s needed on the PK, but that’s says a lot more about what I see as poor roster construction than it does him.

Say what? Everyone except Spezza has been called a scapegoat.

It's because he plays like bambi out there. Completely blinkered every time he touches the puck. Terrified of contact. 6'4" and plays like 5'5".

Good reach though and speed, so decent in our own end, yes.

If he was 6' no one would care because his size is irrelevant. Kind of reminds me of a far quicker Nik Antropov with waaaay worse hands and shot.
