So waste a roster spot for something that provides little value over adding a guy who can actually help us win hockey games.
It seems to not hinder teams like Vegas who dress Reaves. Tampa dresses Maroon. Islanders who dress Martin (all teams in the final 4). It happens all around the league. Waste is a strong word. I remember the outdoor game we won, against Detroit. Martin pummeled Ott infront of the benches. Matthews won it in OT. In his interview he credited Martin specifically for pumping them up. So is Anderson a better player on paper? Absolutely I'll agree. Does it provide more value? Well, I'm not so sure.

I would rather have Ritchie than Tatar.
Why has he been benched in so many playoffs?

Would be nice to have Ritchie riding shotgun on Matthews wing.

I would rather have both. I don't think Ritchie has a regular top 6 upside but he has been as good or better an offensive producer as Foligno the last few years. Tatar might tear it up in the Leafs top 6. He is a legit top 6 shooter who has never had a whiff of linemates like MM and AM.

He was briefly a non-primary PKer in Anaheim in 2020. Other than that, nothing.
I noticed he has some short handed goals in his career. And I know he has a solid two way game. So there's no reason we couldn't turn him into a regular PKer here. Also, a guy like Brooks or Anderson if they make the fourth line, can be a PKer too

We can throw anyone out on the PK, but I would like to use guys who are really good.

There are only so many roster spots, and I don't see room for Anderson or Brooks

All are significantly better players than Gabriel. It is especially insulting to Maroon to bring him down to that level. Maroon is not even an enforcer. He is closer to Simmonds.

Martin and Reaves are the dying breed and even though they suck and should not be in an NHL lineup either, they can at least play a semi decent shift. Gabriel can't. He is not even skilled enough to play in an AHL lineup, but we want him to play 4th line on an NHL team with Cup aspirations?

We are trying to find a Clune replacement in the AHL. A guy who can be an enforcer, since there are a lot more goons at that level than the NHL, but is also just a nice guy to have in the room. We tried Sabourin and obviously he was not the guy. Either way, Clune is not there to be a good player. Gabriel should not have anymore expectations than that either, and that is at the AHL level. It is a complete joke if he is even considered at the NHL level anymore.

Kampf and Kase are buddies. So I find that move interesting. Maybe they get to finally play together as linemates in the shutdown capacity like I talked about (Kerfoot-Kampf-Kase). Also, Kase has been teammates with Ritchie as a Duck and as a Bruin...maybe that continues now here in Toronto...
Sorry, I'm bored and trying to connect random dots haha
I know what we should call that line! Wait... Nevermind

Isn't that why we signed Sommonds. I mean lets be honest he's no longer an NHL player

I'm not saying he's going to be an every day guy. Just I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he comes in, works his behind off like Dubas has said he does, and uses the hometown team motivation to get himself rotated into the lineup. I'm not going to pass judgement before I watch him compete for a spot in a Leafs jersey. Just saying that his style is still valuable in the league today. And that his skating is not an issue. Where he takes it from here remains to be seen

The more I hear people talk about Ritchie, the less I want him.

Bertuzzi for futures + warm bodies (Engvall/Dermott) would make me much happier.

I'd be fine with Robertson going, I think Amirov is much more valuable so I'd like to keep him.

I get the sense dubas understands we need more gritty/ competitive players in order to take the next step. The issue is still our cap structure. We cant afford the quality of players we need. These additions the leafs have made are fringe quality guys that are basically AHLers. This issue will not be solved unless a top player is moved. This structure we have does not work. Look around the league. I’m confident that dubas now knows this, but these next decisions will be difficult.

We would be able to hold approximately 2 more 1.25 million forwards on the roster. I say sign two of Ritchie, Galchenyuk or Gusev and have them battle it out through the beginning of the year to see who sticks.

See I use to agree but now its evening out. Hear me out.

1) The rfa signings... enough said
2) He's consistently chasing- we need skill was his mo, then he realized he needed toughness so he made questionable moves in acquiring foligno over a guy like hall. In previous years he would have never done that. Due to the leadership needed he added the father type players. That didn't work so now he's chasing players in their prime.
Now it can be argued that he's learning from his mistakes.. and fine. But where is the foresight? He let hyman go (not talking about acccepting the oilers offer) for free, and he couldn't read the market and waited to negotiate with rielly which will likely cost him a mill or two in the aav due to the contracts given out to morgan's contemporaries.
3) Our forward group is f***ing ass
4) We can't score in the playoffs and he has done nothing to address that
5) Trading first rounders and losing trades like its his job.

I like dubas. I think he's smart. But he's been godawful in some areas and I think his insistence with sticking with mitch is absolutely asinine.

I do like his drafting, development, creativity, and FA signings when he has cap. But the lack of foresight and him losing like every f***ing negotiation is killing the team. JMO.

Also f*** ryan ;). But no seriously, I think we have the same qualms. I'm just getting more upset with his lack of negotiating skills and foresight.
So you wanted Hyamn to be traded before a playoff run?

I don't remember PK being our problem though

How many PKer do you need? Mikahev marner Engvall keefoot

Thats Steve Y on the other side. Not Ken Holland

He knows thats his trade chip and exactly what the leafs want

If we were willing to trade a 1st rounder for Foligno that's where he's going start at minimum and a prospect

We just lost our top PKer in Hyman. Marner needs his ice time cut, and PK is the smartest place to do it.

I would want 4 really good PKers. Have a few spares would be nice too. Also, Id use Marner/Matthews together for a shift here and there just so they get some reps.

I would rather do a straight swap for Lindholm and sign him for $6-7M instead.

Give me...

To Toronto
Rickard Rakell
Hampus Lindholm

To Anaheim
Morgan Reilly
Pierre Engvall

I'm fine with some filler pieces on other of the deal to make it work.

Rakell-Matthews-Nylander
Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kase
Simmonds-Kampf-Spezza
Robertson
Gabriel

Lindholm-Brodie
Brodie-Holl
Sandin-Dermott

Campbell
Mrazek

Might have to move Kerfoot to get that under the cap.

That's what I like about Kyle. Always ahead of the game.

CJ like many of us speculated earlier today the Leafs were going to add another top 9 winger and top 6 winger. Looks like the top 9 guy is Kase.

I'm still very interested in Tatar. Getting him for 3-3.5M would be a bargain. Kase and his 1.25M likely means the end for Engvall who makes an identical salary, and that's fine.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Tatar-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kase

Much better looking top 9 than anything we put together last season.

Yup thats very solid. As I mentioned in the Kase thread, quicker and more skilled. I prefer someone better then Tatar but he's okay.
