Let's check back at the end of the year and compare Bunting to the two above. Take into consideration the cap savings, and I suspect you may think differently.

But it is sad that a 3 game losing streak at the completely wrong time has pretty much slammed the perception of this team moving forward. It was like coming home and seeing you wife hooking up with your best friend. All trust is gone.

We could afford them and Bunting though. To me this is a bit of a make or break off-season and I just don't see any urgency. Truly disappointing.

I'd give a shot to Kase on a 1 year deal if he wants a bounce back team. I think he could be that kind of player that provides Ennis level quality for cheap.

No idea if he's healthy enough though.

What if we moved Nylander to the left side. He played LW in Sweden and on the world stage and looked good there. Acquire Tarasenko at 50%. Trade Engvall for a pick.

Nylander Matthews Tarasenko
Bunting Tavares Marner
Kerfoot Kampf Mikheyev
Simmonds Brooks Spezza
Anderson

That's a better forward group than last year but I doubt we get Tarasenko. Would be cool though.

Bunting is going to surprise a lot of people. I’d be surprised if he isn’t a standout in our top 9 next season.

That is what I'm hoping for. Becomes a little shit disturber in the top 9 that goes something like 20g 20a. That would be amazing value.

Where would you fit Tarasenko? We have no money!

Well, apparently Taras has zero value on the trade-market. He has 2 years left at 7.5 cap hit. If we were to offer St Louis an asset - say Dermott, 2nd, or something similar, perhaps they can retain $2m for 2 years.

At 5.5 we can fit him under the cap by dealing Kerfoot for futures. That would still leave us about $1.5 mil under the cap to add another bottom 6 forward.

5 forwards Maple Leafs could target in ‘second wave’ of UFA market - Sportsnet.ca

Tomas Tatar: Of all the UFA wingers still on the board, none produced more points per game in 2021 than the 30-year-old Tatar (0.6), who was the Montreal Canadiens’ leading scorer as recently as 2019-20. A proven offensive weapon and power-play threat with positive underlying metrics (58.9 CF%), Tatar already has six 20-goal campaigns on his résumé. So why was he healthy scratched by two teams in two Stanley Cup Finals?

Nick Ritchie: A big body (six-foot-two, 234 pounds). A first-round pick. A local boy. And a project now looking to join his third franchise at age 25. The inconsistent Ritchie went unqualified as an RFA by the rival Boston Bruins but could still be an asset to many a middle six. He brings a rugged element the Leafs are not flush with.

Marcus Johansson: A 20-goal, 50-point asset for Washington before concussions and a slew of sweater changes derailed his career, the 30-year-old Swede fits the mould of a project Dubas would be willing to take on for cheap.

Alex Galchenyuk: Dubas has said the door is open on a Galchenyuk return, and the determined winger certainly showed flashes alongside John Tavares and William Nylander. He’s exploring his options, and even the team that drafted him (Montreal) is said to have some level of interest in a reunion. His last contract was one year at $1.05 million. Would he take that again?

Danton Heinen: A capable if unspectacular two-way winger, the 26-year-old Heinen peaked way back in 2017-18, when he put up 47 points with the Bruins. He did not receive his $2.775 million qualifying offer from the Ducks and will need to take a pay cut to prove himself. Should be motivated.

These are the type of sneaky good finds Dubas will be considering. Some pan out (Galchenyuk, Tyler Ennis). Some don’t (Jimmy Vesey). And if the GM doesn’t see value, he’ll be content to let his cap room grow and use it at another all-in trade deadline.

Please understand the cap before making a post like this, the Leafs have enough money to fit Tarasenko at 50% retained. Toronto needs to run a 21 man roster pretty much, it would super tight to the cap. but they will have money. Cap friendly has players like Brooks/Amadio/Gabirel/Beiga on the roster so it takes up cap room. Come the regular season, they wouldn't be on the roster. If Toronto would trade for another player like Tarasenko or whomever, I would imagine Toronto would be trading like Engvall back to free up more cap.

Would love to see Kerfoot and Engvall moved to create some space and sign some skilled depth. Would give us $8.35m in open cap space to pursue players.

Marcus Johansson at $2.5m
Nick Ritchie at $1.8m
Tomas Tatar at $3m

Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Nylander
Tatar-Johansson-Mikheyev
Simmonds-Kampf-Spezza
Gabriel/Brooks

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin-Holl
Dermott

Campbell
Mrazek

Would have loved to get Saad, clearly wasn't in the cards though.

That would be a very shrewd move if Dubas can pull that off. I would love something like that as well.

I don't see it happening though. I think they'll find a lowly team to take him on for just a soft deal.

that would be great but isn't taras known to be like a problem locker room guy or something

Don't think so? Sometimes those issues are completely overblown. Hoffman had many issues not that long ago now everybody can't stop praising the Habs for it. Which is kinda weird.

Either way, Tarasenkos issues are mostly health related. It's clear he wants a change of scenery too but that doesn't mean he's a bad guy.

Unfortunately, without retention, this is all for nothing and Armstrong never seems to lose a trade.

We have a lot of even-keeled posters on this board, the trouble is they're often drowned out by the incessant debbie-downers on this board whose only joy in life is to try to make others as miserable as they are.

Were I a mod for but one day...this place would get a Red Wedding-like cleanse.

Alas, will have to make do with the ignore button.
Yup well said. It just gets annoying every small move gets painted as the worst move someone could do.
I'm up for the board cleaning idea:laugh:

Tatar was a healthy scratch in the playoffs by Montreal and against our Leafs.

I wouldn't think this is a helping move. We need a player that has size and can play a heavy game.

We lost Hyman and Foligno and replaced neither yet.

Sort of.

A few years ago, he was known as one of the leaders in St Louis, and apparently he expected to be given the C after Pietro. When that went to O'reilly he apparently got pissed. On top of that, St Louis botched his shoulder surgery twice, leading him to getting a 3rd one. So that got him real upset and he demanded a trade.

I'm not sure why more teams haven't come calling on him tbh - although I've read that Lou was sniffing around. But Lou has his own guys to sign.

So far, I'm only disappointed in missing out on one guy in Free Agency... Hakanpaa.... Great signing by Dallas.

It's still early in the process, so I'm not going to freak out like some, as this isn't a finished product.

Of the remaining potential moves, I'd be interested in the Leafs doctors looking at Tarasenko. At 50% Cap, I'd move a minor asset for him

I'd also be interested in Nick Ritchie, but at a lower hit than he had last year. I appreciate he isn't consistent, but he does bring an element that we lack.

Manson @ 2 mil cap hit at the deadline will fix all our problems. Everything being proposed right now is bandaid. I really don't know why Rielly is still a Leaf. Leafs need to re-stock the cupboards, not use him as a own rental. 5 first round losses in a row, time to try something new. Have they seen the price for D right now? It's a sellers market.

Muzzin-Brodie
?-Manson
?-Holl

Smother central. Teams going through the playoff grind won't have the energy to push through that. Holls skillset will show better on the third pairing as well. Look at how Stone Matthews Marner Point and Stamkos died against whatever it was the Habs did to them. Would be nice for us to do that to other teams for a change.

Leafs actually have a lot of options with how easy it would be to trade Rielly or Kerfoot or just sit on the cap and let it accrue until something comes along. You'd have to enact my username though because the accrue route will cost picks. Or you can even combine Rielly with picks and get even more creative. Sometimes players become available out of no where. Some teams who think they're making the playoffs might end up in the bottom of the league and become sellers etc.

I'm on the optimistic end of things. I don't see the doom and gloom like others. The right move or two can push us back to high end contenders. I'll give Dubas one more chance to deliver.
