None of the names out there really interest me much. Even Hall is just a project that you're hoping isn't irreparably damaged for the year because he played with the Sabres. I wouldn't give up anything significant unless he's being double retained and we can get another piece besides him.

I think we've got a good team and don't see any deadline acquisition pushing us over the top of anything. If our top players play like our top players, we're going to far this season. If not, then we won't. Simple as that.

I think Iafallo is a piece that I really appreciate, for 4 reasons.

1. He plays with Kopitar successfully right now, whose speed, game and pace of play are similar to that of Tavares', therefore, I don't think playing with Tavares and Nylander would be much of an adjustment for him. He would fit what they already do.

2. Toronto has had a good level of success dealing with LA and getting trades done at a reasonable price. I think the two organizations have a good working relationship and the players who have come from LA have fit in well in Toronto and have played well at the same time.

3. The best addition this team can make to their lineup is Zack Hyman to their 3rd line, where he's a surefire difference maker, defensive specialist and matchup problem. The addition of Iafallo allows Toronto's top 9 to look like the following, which I really like.

Galchenyuk-Matthews-Marner
Iafallo-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Engvall-Hyman

4. Iafallo is looking for a raise in the off season, but he and the Kings are struggling on a deal. I think that if Toronto moves on from Kerfoot and Anderson, as I expect they will, you can see an avenue in which Hyman and Iafallo are both extended next year. Hyman for around 4.75 million and Iafallo for around 3.75 million, post expansion.

If Iafallo can be had for a reasonable price, and I suspect he can be, that would be my target. Add a guy like Oleksiak to push Dermott into the #7 role and I'm happy with that team depth.

Mete will get claimed. 22 year old with a 700k contract is appealing. Yet again, Kylington passed through, but he was waived during a mass exodus of players on the wire early in the season.

Would put in a claim if the Leafs didn’t have Sandin healthy. A 7th D that can PK is more of a pressing need. Marincin is still their best option in that role and he needs to be upgraded on.

He is a bit overrated IMO. People think he is Coleman or Goodrow but he does not have any of the defensive ability they have, which is much of what makes them worth a 1st round pick.

He is not even super physical. He's scoring at a ridiculous clip this year but other than that, he's a bottom 6er here and not even a special one at that.
good insight on him. truth is all i'd expect him to be is a 3rd line energy guy. super cheap too.

If Laughton had term i would happily pay more for him. but not giving a 1st for him as a UFA.

Boone Jenner was a target of mine but he is out for the season.

Engvall isca guy that if he ever puts it all together he'd be very valuable.
he does have value. but i dont think he is ever anything more than a 3rd liner. he is also almost 25, so not sure what he has left that is untapped. i wouldnt mind having him in a deal for a bottom 6 upgrade.

Edit: including him also creates cap space and a roster spot. Laughton @ 50% is less than Engvalls hit so no cap worries there.

If I’m Hall, the only teams I’m willing to waive my NTC to are Toronto and Colorado.

If he stays on Buffalo he can play the “it was a bad team/situation” card for his next contract.

If he goes to Boston, who has really struggled to score 5v5 this year, there’s a chance that’s gonna hurt his contract more. “Even after being traded to Boston he still sucked!”

Leafs, Avs, and maybe the Pens (idk are they looking for a winger?) are the only three teams that I can confidently say he won’t be worse than he is on Buffalo.

Personally, I think Hall needs to find himself a team that might actually be interested in resigning him.

Sure, he could go to Toronto, play with M&M or Tavares and put up big numbers -- then what? Teams look at him as a player who did absolutely nothing in Buffalo for most of the season, then joined one of the league's top scoring teams so he put up some numbers, and now what? What version of Hall are you getting?

IMO, he should be using this opportunity as a "try-out" to show a good team how well he fits, and why they should commit big $ and term to him. Maybe it's Colorado who has Saad expiring, who hasn't been spectacular. Maybe it's Boston who's lacked depth scoring forever; and has Krejci & Rask expiring. He apparently turned down Colorado last summer... maybe they'll forgive him?

Carolina would be another wildcard team for me as well. Problem is, he's been so bad, he hasn't really "earned the clout" to be able to say "let me negotiate my own trade".

Siegenthaler is pretty big and plays a safe game, doesn't do anything especially well and his foot speed isn't the best although not awful for his size. He wouldn't play over anyone here but is young and answers some expansion questions for the Devils. Didn't think he would return a 3rd though.

He is also expansion eligible and arguably is the best that Jersey has to offer. Either him or Michael McLeod/Yegor Sharangovich.

I don't disagree, but the counter would be is there a better 'spotlight' than being a top6 W on the Leafs with either Matthews-Marner or Tavares - Nylander?
Assuming he is confident that on either line he can excel, it could be the best way to (in less than 6 months) shed off the 'loosing' persona, which I think he has unfairly garnered.

Maybe Flordia, less for the spotlight and more because they have the money to re-sign him and he would be a monumental upgrade on Marchment/Lomberg/Lammiko.
On Carolina, he isnt bumping Svech and Nino has looked really good on the 2LW spot. If your Hall, do you want to go somewhere where you may be a 3W? (If he wants to play the RW, they have room)
A team who makes sense IMO is Nashville. their top LW is Rocco Grimaldi right now.. yesh.

Agreed, if he goes to a contender and flops he'll cost himself even more money & term. Boston is who I thought would've signed him this past off-season. He'd be decent fit there as he can carry their second line and fits their core's age. Sweeney seems to like sitting on his hands though, so who knows.

Hall doesn't need a spotlight IMO. He needs to show a GM how well he can fit into THEIR team.

In Carolina I'd imagine they'll figure out how to get one of them on the right side. Florida is another good suggestion. Nashville IMO just isn't in a position to make the type of investment that Buffalo would want.

I doubt he makes it to us but if he did, I imagine the Leafs would claim him.

The other thing that I am really starting to think is that the Leafs could toss a soft offer to Jersey for Vatanen, without retention, once he clears and keep him on the taxi squad as our #7 if we don't get Hall.

If anyone wanted Vatanen in their top 6, they'd likely just claim him or would want Jersey to retain/take money back in exchange for an asset. What the Leafs can do though is offer to take the money off of their books, without retention, in exchange for a decent but not great return like the one above. They don't need to pay the rest of his salary, get something in return for him, open up a roster spot for Siegenthaler, and they would still have one more open retention spot to potentially be a third party like Detroit was in the Savard trade or one of their remaining UFA's.

The Leafs have to pay the overage on Vatanen to keep him on their taxi squad, but they'd have outstanding depth for the playoffs while giving up practically nothing of value. If we are not getting Hall, we will have a ton of cap space to get a forward and goalie while still being able to do a deal like this.

Wasn’t he a top 4 defencemen not too long ago

I don't mind adding Vatanen for cheap. I think he'd knock Dermott off the bottom pair rather than land in the #7 slot.

did i really overpay on the Wood deal? not getting good feedback but i feel like thats what it would take.
For me it’s not so much that it’s an overpay. I’m not interested in playing the price for term and then having to expose that player to Seattle.
Right now we can protect Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Reilly, Brodie, Muzzin, and Holl. Leaving Kerfoot, Mikheyev, and Dermott as our 3 best exposed players. Adding another forward with term means we have to expose him or Holl
