Thanks, he'd be a great pickup for a mid-late round pick; not a defensive/physical guy but definitely a really good puck moving defenseman that can play the Leafs system. If guys go down he's got a ton of experience playing top 4 minutes and can even push/challenge Dermott for a spot on the 3rd pair (or in the case they dress 7d). He's a righty but plays both sides; doesn't have a muffin shot on the PP.

Exactly. Perfect utility defenseman to pick up for a playoff run where you have to constantly make adjustments. Provided we can squeeze him onto the taxi squad, of course.

With this and the Capfriendly tweet about demoting Hutch/Marincin/Barabanov being just enough to clear room for Freddy's contract, I'm skeptical there will be more moves coming (unless we subtract say, Kerfoot). We haven't had anything to suggest Freddy is planning to stay on LTIR up to the playoffs yet.

My guess is a cheap waiver exempt d; hope its Vatanen.

idk about exactly 50% but yea ain't much cap if any; but they can still make a move or another cheap waiver exempt player (1.075m + whatever cap they have leftover if any).

Is Mirtle saying we don't have cap space? Fairly sure we have a crap load of cap space right now. We would only need a goalie here.

I would be using prospects instead of picks to get our goalie and defensive depth at this point though. We only have our 2nd, 5th, and 6th in 2021... Which is not good given the depth and potential upside in the draft. I imagine we could be making some trades to leverage our cap space to recoup some picks though. We can't be ignoring the draft just because we are competing.

I don’t know, he played on a team that created no offence so hopefully on a team that creates a lot he will regain some of his form. He definitely makes the leafs harder to play against which is what we need in the playoffs imho.

I mean if we think Freddy is going to be good to go soon, it should be easy enough to move him out and bring in an upgrade. Still more coming from Dubas I think.

Keefe has said they expect Freddy back before the playoffs. We need to keep at least 5M in space for when we activate him off LTIR.

this Trade Machine - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps is a more accurate tool although it has its own flaws as well, and when dealing with LTIR you have to do a bit of math on your own which can be tricky.

I think Mirtle is very trust-worthy when it comes to cap; he's a very well respected publisher for The Athletic.

For those wondering whether this means Andersen is absolutely out until the playoffs, the answer so far is nope.

Before this trade the Leafs had $4.075m in LTIR relief remaining and need $5m to activate Andersen.

- Foligno uses $1.375m

The Leafs can still send down two players to the taxi:
- Barabanov adds $925k
- Marincin adds $700k

That would leave the Leafs with $4.325m in LTIR relief, and it’s actually enough to activate Andersen.

Teams cannot loan players to the AHL/Taxi after the trade deadline, however there are a few exceptions to that rule. One of those exceptions are players on Emergency Recall can be loaned.

Hutchinson is on Emergency Recall. So if the Leafs went with this plan, when Andersen is healthy they can assign Hutchinson, leaving the team with $5.05m in the LTIR pool—enough space to activate Andersen.
