I really think that the Leafs are going big game hunting today

a top 9 forward with some nasty and a 4/5 Dman

Lawson Crouse and Ilya Lyubushkin

That is a very liberal definition of a "top 9 forward" and "4/5 defenseman". Lyubushkin is a mediocre #7 defenseman and Crouse is an overhyped 4th liner at best right now.

If the Leafs nab Hall my hope is he's sheltered with Hyman on his line.

Hall Tavares Hyman

Line 1: Nylander Matty Mitch

Line 3: Gally Engvall Mikheyev

Line 4: Kerfoot Spezza Simmonds

When Nash is healthy in the playoffs Kerfoot either moves up to replace Engvall or maybe there's another injury by then.

It’s fair if you don’t like him as an option here but if moved he will certainly cost at least a 1st or the equivalent value.

Let someone else overpay for him then. We are already taking a major risk on him at the price he should be going for, and that is a lot less than a 1st.

I would really like to keep our first this year

Given our scouting under Dubas, I think this is a year where you can get a superstar in the late 1st round and we could really use an ELC star

That being said, sometimes you gotta take your shots to win the Cup. So I guess it really just depends on what the return is.

I think Buffalo will claim Mete. They have nothing on the left side.

I wouldn't be shocked to see someone claim Vatanen either. He's a much better, and cheaper, option than Montour who just went for a 3rd round pick without any retention. A team like Winnipeg could probably use him.

The rest will clear, but I would not be surprised to see the Leafs look at Biega as a cheap depth option on RD after that happens. Give up a prospect for him and sit him on the taxi-squad.

Crouse is playing 3rd line minutes currently, I think that qualifies as top 9, his presence makes the bottom 6 a lot stronger and his inclusion forces certain guys out of the line-up

Lyubushkin is a solid stay at home type with size who can skate, maybe not a 4 but a 5 easily, as depth he's a far sight better then Marty don't you think?

88 with 34 and 16 seems like overkill. A strong 3rd line could be the difference needed to knock off Vegas and TB IMO.

Maybe so. I thought Nylander on the third line might not work but would try it out. Hall and Hyman with JT seems like a perfect 2nd line on a contender though.

Almost certainly not. They are in the same tier.

As for Crouse, playing time doesn't mean he is any good. Marleau and Thornton received top 9 minutes from us but they were far from top 9 players.

You are talking about a guy we can't protect and will likely require an overpayment to acquire but will hardly even move the needle in our lineup. If anything, he may make it worse. He has been that bad.

Problem with Vantanen is he cannot be trusted. If you play D and lack trust I am not sure if you can have a home

You have goal scorers on 3rd and 4th line now. It's not like the old days

Are you saying he will be traded for ‘a lot less than a first’?

How would it help? I imagine any potential suitors would have the ability to watch him play in any market.

The extra media hype.

Sure GMs can technically watch every player they want, but playing in a big media market means you will be seeing that player getting praised and extra attention every time they turn on sporting news. You play in a market like Arizona and nobody will talk about you.

is this the same logic as assists don't matter?

Crouse or Thornton in your line-up? that moves the needle

depth and goaltending is the key to playoff success, you need both to be there at the end

so adding two regular everyday players is what?
Two very average everyday players maybe. It’s a depth move at best. Neither player is a massive improvement on the guy they would push out of the lineup.
I wouldn’t say it’s bad to pick them up as I think it would make the team a little deeper. I also wouldn’t call that “big game hunting”

I’ve never believed players are scouted through listening to press conferences and watching Sports Desk.

We are talking about defensemen.

I also don't see how he can't be trusted. Maybe he is not a top 4 defenseman on a contender anymore, but there are some teams (like Winnipeg) who have far less on their defenses than what Vatanen has to offer. Or if he clears and comes with retention, he would be a pretty good depth option for the Leafs considering he can play both sides and can slot in a variety of ways (and has handled large minutes in the past). Not something I think we explore personally, but you could do a lot worse.
