Owning mistakes and everything is all well and good but it definitely becomes a problem when the mistakes are piling up so much that Dubas is hemorrhaging draft capital to correct them. Not to mention this isn’t a team making deep runs every year.

So why are we supposed to have any confidence in the cap space being spent accordingly this time around?

My guess is Kuemper or Gibson (if Anaheim is willing to retain on him). It would be Dubas first real stamp on this team making a big big trade, and could possibly be his last.

Gibson such a risk. But would kind be intriguing to see the chaos lol

Ya I get the desire to go established. Its want I would want to do. Paying #1 dollars for someone who hasn't proven they can be a #1 is a gamble the leafs can't take

It's the first one he had to fix.

Im definitely wary of Gibson. But if the Leafs could potentially get say 20% retention from the Ducks, it would be intriguing.
I'm wary of the contract
I'm wary of his play
I'm wary of the trade cost

I really don't see how he's any better than giving Campbell a raise, tbh

Similar for giving Kuemper a massive contract. Is his play/consistency that much above just re-signing Campbell for a bit cheaper?

My worry with the signing of Kuemper would involve the contract that he figures to demand. Bringing in the most recent Cup winning goalie via UFA sure seems like an easy sell to the fan base though.

Husso, Kuemper and Soup all could be risky. Husso should be the cheapest and riskiest but could be a home run. Kyle has a blank sheet now. He better not screw it up.

Early rumblings is that they are targetting the Grubauer contract as a base. 6 x 5.9M per.

Kuemper is older so that makes it trickier, but if you can get him at like 4-5 x 6M, I think it would be a big get. One of the best consistent goaltenders over the last 3-5 years.

Massive risk, you know he can handle a starters role, he's done it for many seasons, theres a chance he becomes his old self again, or he implodes and we are deep trouble. There is highrisk, high reward with trading for Gibson.

This right here is why I think they are going to go after someone experienced that can play 60ish games. Be awful risky to run a unknown as your backup and make them play 30~ games.

This always made the most sense to do. A clear starter and get a young-ish cheap goaltender to compete for the backup.

They will very likely still target a cheap goaltender that can be the 3rd stringer though.

Not sure i want to pay many assets in trade, and Kuemper is the only proven starter.
