Well, he had a full NTC with 4 years left at big $$$ and is starting to slow down from his heavy usage (like Muzzin).

I think the return reflects the full control he had over being traded at all, and he could control his destination.

There's definitely a logic to it. That said,.I think most folks would have been surprised yesterday if we told he'd just be given away for next to nothing

Theres no way you actually think Tampa has f***ed their cap situation lol
So they literally gave their top matchup #2D away for nothing.
I think this lower quote sums up the situation pretty well. If that isn't f***ed up cap situation I don't know what is.

Though in cap world it is sometimes necessary evil and they got two cups already so they can manage.

Can understand McDonagh signing off on this trade as Nashville is still a playoff calibre team. The biggest value for TB here might be in keeping much of that team together for future runs. However, Myers is also an NHLer of some quality and the possibility still exists for Mismash to eventually get there in some capacity too. All in all, Nashville still gets the best of this trade for today IMO.

This would also answer the question of why such poor return. It may have been the only destination McDonagh was willing to accept.
He probably provided a short list that had playoff calibre teams in no income tax states… so Vegas, Dallas, Florida, Nashville and from there they decided with him which was the best option for both parties.
He signed what was considered at the time as an under market deal and he wasn’t willing to sacrifice any more money especially if he was being forced out his preferred destination. Like others have said the teams only other recourse was to just let him go on waivers

Because he could have been waived.

Listen you are leaving either way. If you don’t give us a team we can give u too we will waive you and try your luck
McDonagh did at least end up on a team that figures to finish within the top half of the league more often than not instead of a team in serious contention for waiver wire claims. I can't imagine any team was taking on that contract without sending some kind of cap back though. Of course, I'd consider that as being a reflection of the cap and not a knock against the player.

You think they would waive him and have like 5.5 million in dead cap space?

Clearly a team would have taken him. Nashville did. It’s pretty simple.

If a player with some value refuses a trade. Their options are

1.) refuse to waive and end up wherever
2.) bet that no one will take you.

If a player really thinks that another team won’t take him for free. It’s hard to admit you suck that bad.

If mcdonagh refused. He could have ended up in detroit. Or jersey or ottawa etc. it’s a heck of a bet on your future based on you sucking basically

Elliott Freidman brought up Darcy Kuemper for the Leafs.

I'd be so happy with that 920+ goaltender in the regular season, cup winning goaliehe'd be a great add.

Kumper/Holtby as a tandem would be great

All he said was he was curious to see how Kuemper would feel about Toronto. Completely throwing something against the wall.

They wanted to free up cap to sign Palat and makes me wonder if they have a trade in place or in mind as well. I totally agree with your view on Muzzin with regard to McDonagh.

I think Tampa is moving on now before seeing the full on regression in him.
