McDonagh had full a NTC, limits options for TB on a return. They won't care though, the cap space is worth more at this point and they proactively get out of a soon to be very bad contract.

It's amusing watching other teams bail Tampa out of cap hell every year.

It's great evidence that GMs tend to act more collusionary than as aggressive competitors. They love helping each other out

I think this lower quote sums up the situation pretty well. If that isn't f***ed up cap situation I don't know what is.

Though in cap world it is sometimes necessary evil and they got two cups already so they can manage.

Numerous reports had McDonagh playing well below his standards during this run and battling a ton of injuries and mileage. Tampa is being quite proactive in moving on from this massive contract before it can be a problem for them. This is the approach I want to take with Muzzin. If things are bad enough there's always LTIR. But what if he's just a severely distressed asset in and out of the lineup? Couldn't we spend the $5.6 million on something less rickety?

You get the sense Toronto's management team doesn't enjoy insider status in the Old Boys Club.

Seems like a panic move by Tampa ... more patience and they could have maybe gotten some value, but I imagine they want to ensure they can make a play to keep Palat without having to worry about adding an asset to McDonagh later in the off-season.

I'm shocked that they couldn't get anything of value.

That is bad news for Muzzin's market value.

Compare the 2

Muzzin has 2 years left, we've paid his signing bonus this year so..

This season he's owed 2M in salary and next season 4M, so 3M on average for the next 2 years, pretty palatable, not a long term commitment.

McDonagh on the other hand...24.99 (rounding to 25M) 25M over the next 4 years which is 6.25M on average actual $$.

I think if we want to move Muzzin, we can, we might do okay.

Imagine moving JT out. It’s quite incredible that TB can manage to move players with NTC out so simply and swiftly.

"Things are tight...we'd like to look at moving you, where do you want to go?" or if we get an offer from a team we like, can we bring it to you?

The man helped them get to 2 cups...we haven't had the success we wanted with JT...and covid cap didn't help. Sometimes conversations can suck.

Wow a player got moved with a full NTC , kept hearing that was impossible !

I guess it’s time to have a talk with Johnny !

Tampa are ruthless and committed to winning at all costs, will not hesitate to ship off whoever is needed in order to keep window open as long as possible.

Meanwhile our guys are on version 6 of running it back or whatever number it is now, because "there's a tremendous belief in this group."

I think getting both Blackwood and MAF would be shrewd moves if it works financially, MAF at like 3M for a year? Heck of a mentor for Blackwood. MAF can't eat 50 starts anymore but might have the goalie of the future with a good mentor behind him for this year.

Goaltending was crippling for us and unless Shesterkin, Helley, Sorokin or Vas hit the market, we're gonna have to roll the dice to an extent.

Knies is gonna help the top 9 at some point when he joins the team.

NTC allows to be waived. It’s either let us trade you or hope you don’t get picked up by columbus

NMC is can’t be waived

Taking their #2D for free isn't bailing them out.

What worse penalty do you want Tampa to pay for their cap hell than losing their #2D for nothing?

Players rarely refuse to waive their NTCs.

No reason to think Tavares wouldnt waive his as well.

But why would we give away our ppg C?

This stuff is hilarious.

The Leafs are constantly ruthless and let their depth players go instead of overpaying. They get mocked for "own rentals" and "losing assets for nothing".

Meanwhile now Tampa gets praised for being forced to literally give away their 2nd best dman for nothing.

Crazy town.

People need to realize deal is the equivalent of trading TJ Brodie for a cap dump. Even worse because McDonagh is better

Muzz is cheaper, signed for a shorter term and has a modified ntc next season opening up trade options.
I’m totally on board with moving Muzz, but I see the logic in keeping him for this season considering he’s the only D man who brings something different to the group
