Starter problem solved. Now on to the backup. I really hope he is looking hard at Comrie. The money would balance out the Murray spend nicely and help with some other moves.

I believe we’ll probably end up signing Comrie at like 1.5m x2
Comrie vs Samsanov is an interesting one.

Comrie is coming off the better season, but it was only 19 games. He's bounced around multiple teams the last few years, and has for the most part been in the AHL. He's older than Samsonov by 2 years as well, and his career NHL stats aren't very good other than the 19 games last year.

Samsonov would probably be more expensive, but has had two pretty weak years in a row. However, before that he had a solid enough NHL rookie season, and before that he had 3 fantastic KHL seasons, multiple fantastic international appearances for Russia, and generally had much better pedigree than Comrie as Samsonov was also a former 1st rounder.

Michigan
So bottom C options

Dylan Strome
Sam Gagner
Brett Howden
Chris Tierney
Nico Sturm
Victor Rask
Darren Helm
Sam Steel
Derek Stepan

Are we looking for another line to simply prevent chances or create them?
Rodrigues/Jarnkrok are good options for 3C. Lazar/Larsson for 4C.

Once Philly signs Gaudreau they'll have to dump some serious salary. Could see two of JVR, Konecny or Ellis out the door.

If they sign Gaudreau, it's probably JvR and some picks, to Arizona or Chicago for Future Considerations. It's the logical move for them.

I'd imagine they'd be more inclined for a more offensive center to replace Spezzas. Kampf's line will get more defensive usage between the bottom two lines

Tierney is 2 tire fire seasons in Ottawa removed from his initial 48 and 37 point seasons in Ottawa.

Ehhhh I don't know about that one. I think people spitting on the 3rd are sleeping on it. It's a valued asset.
Its actually more a re-captured asset if you prefer.

Maple Leafs traded • Nick Ritchie • draft pick (Coyotes choice of 2023 third round pick or 2025 second round pick) (?-?) on 2022-02-19
&
Pittsburgh Traded • Jared McCann to Maple Leafs for • Filip Hallander • 2023 seventh round pick (?-?) on 2021-07-17

Leafs had dumped their own 3rd in 2023 to get out of the Nick Ritchie contract signing and dealt their 7th away to secure an asset for the expansion draft.

The Murray trade return in essence reverses those 2 previous Leafs trades and now restocks the draft pick cupboard with the equivalent round replacements, only picking in a different teams spot.

We panic bought, simple as that. Dubas didn’t want to walk into July 13 with exposure in the goalie position on the depth chart whilst Campbell and Kuemper flew off the shelves so he made it happen. He wanted to avoid one media storm in all likelihood but created another.

But ask yourself what Ottawa would have done handcuffed on the Giroux front and missing out on all their free agent plans holding 3 goalies, the most expensive of which they viewed as a toxic asset?

Dubas is a GM who gave Mrazek a limited no trade and three years so the track record of his panic buying is well established.

Really seems like Dubas didn't want Campbell back.

We don't really know what goes on behind the scene but must have been something, going back to last year when they wanted him on the cheap, and then bringing in a backup for a higher price. Wonder what would have gone on with a healthy Mrazek?

Strome is always so tempting but are his respectable numbers a product of Kane and Debrincat and the pp and top 6 ice time or does he have a fit? Tierney and Steel as well although the assumption Steel will suddenly produce any more with a change of teams may not be reality. Are Strome or Steel playoff style guys at all?

Leafs were linked to Zach Aston Reese that fits that mold. I don't see Lemieux coming to Toronto, but he could be valuable on a 1 year deal.

Lemieux would be awesome

Steel isn't really all that appealing to be honest.

Tierney I could see turning it around.

I figure if we can find cheap wingers for JT that can work out, maybe Robertson-Strome-88 could feast on lines.

Regardless of his flaws, as a 6'3 25 year old former 3rd OA pick centre with 154 points in his last 225 games (56 point pace), I'm just assuming some team out there is going to offer him ~4.5M and that he'll be out of our price range. So I don't think we'll need to debate him much.

They're fairly loaded at centre, no?

Benier
Wennberg
Gourde
McCann (easy to move to wing)
Geekie

Does Wright have anything left to prove in the OHL?

I thought Strome might go to Boston but then Krejci news is out there.
