My big brain take:

Bunting- AM - MM
? - Tavares - ?
? - ? - Nylander
? - Kampf - Engvall

I would prioritize a good winger for Tavares, a 3c for Nylander, and perhaps a good 4th liner like ZAR (idk, people say he's good)
Fill the rest with low $ signings or, ideally, prospects such as:

Holmberg
Anderson
Robertson
Steeves
Knies(later on)

It's about time they get a shot.

Shelter the 3rd line and bury the fourth in the D zone.

You assuming Kerfy is traded? Or did you forget him?

Johnston mentioned Reimer in his Murray column on Northstar bets.

Reimer/Comrie/Samsonov/Stolarz are all decent targets I think.
Very decent options. I'd include vets like Halak and Greiss too, who can be had for nothing more than money, unlike Optimus Reim & Stolarz

I think there is 4 things we definitely need.
Top 6 forward
Backup goalie
3rd line RW
4th line C.

Right now those are things we definitely need. The rest can be filled out internally.
Although we are likely going to have to clear out space to get these pieces. Holl/Kerfoot most likely to be moved out.
Cap wise we aren't in the worst spot. Your needs list is bang on, and like you said, can be filled out internally. First line stays Bunting-Matthews-Marner, third line in house can still be Kerfoot-Kampf-Engvall with what we have in house (Engvall played some RW and Mikheyev LW at times, they flip flopped). 4th line C I'd like to see us make a pitch to a younger guy with upside such as Sam Steel or Colin White. Clifford & Simmonds likely rotate with eachother this year, and the other spot goes to a Marlie who takes it. Leo financially if we can get a backup at 1.5mil or six we can go get a Domi, Smith, Perron tier of winter to play in the top 6

We might need a top 4 RD as well unless they're confident Liljegren can go from healthy scratch in the playoffs to top 4 RD.

I would rather have done Murray (50%) for future considerations without the 3rd and 7th
Agreed. While it'd be great to derive future value from those picks, positive contributions from Murray are necessary for the here and now. Murray at a lesser cap hit potentially helps to ease the burden on him while also allowing a bit more cap to be dedicated to the other part of the goalie tandem.

Getting the vibe Dubas won’t trade anyone and will just bargain bin out the depth.

It feels that way for sure.

Leafs have just over 6M to re-sign Engvall and Sandin. Let's safely assume they will be a combined 4M, that leaves 2M for the back-up and depth.

Trading Kerfoot and Holl would open up 5.5M, which I think would go a long way to shift the chairs... but I'm not sure you'll get any better value out of those players in free agency.

It turns out Ottawa had all the leverage.

They said no to 75% via 3way
They said no to 50%
They said no to 25% with a major sweetener

They shipped him at 25% for a 3rd, 7th

What happened?

As it currently stands with contract projection from EvolvingHockey:

Clifford and Simmonds not included because they are negative WAR players. Murray's retention is reflected in the negative dead cap number.

From what I gather, this trade depended largely on the medicals of Murray, which were OK'd by the teams doctors - and it took a week, so it wasn't just a 'let's take a quick peek and say á OK'.

I did not want Murray at 75%, would've preferred him at 50%, but it is what it is... on the big plus side he's a past SC champion, plus he has major familiarity with the HC and the GM.

We got him for free, and we do not know if there is a side deal linked to this one, after free agency (dependant on the signings of the two teams) - doubtful, but one can never be too certain... the future considerations can mean anything, although likely it's the seventh going back, or a AHL body.

I for one am hopeful and afraid of what might become, let's hope that we end next season in a W.

This is the definition of boom or bust, and GMKD is willing to bet his job on it - there's a reason why these boards are wrong, so many times per season, regarding the decisions by NHL GM's... we don't get the big bucks for dedicating almost all of our time to analyze and ponder about the teams and their futures.

Let the professionals make their moves, and after they fail (this time, for the last time), we can demand their heads.

Big day tomorrow, let's go raccoons, to the dumpster dive of summer '22!

All injury prone players are medically cleared before the season begins. Injury prone doesn't mean you're hurt 24 / 7 it means you can go from fully healthy to dead really fast

People were thrown off by the word "sweetener"

That no one "in the business" used, unless we think sportssponges are "in the business" side of hockey.

Social media is a perpetual motion machine, facts or fiction all is welcome.

During the draft there was a lot of expressed "concern" about the lack of picks, but now getting picks isn't important.

Would I have liked a better deal ... I'd have been happy if they threw in Stutzle even settled for Batherson.

But the trade was for a goaltender first and foremost, and the evidence has to be presented to the jury before any verdict is rendered. What he did before he was a Leaf is irrelevant to me, same way if they signed Malkin, couldn't care what he did for the Penguins. He should be judged on what he does for the Leafs.

This was an ideal signing, it is likely Dubas biggest gamble, and we should all hope he was right, unless of course it isn't about what happens on the ice.

Murray had a 915 save percentage before his last game against Arizona where he let in 8 goals… He wasn’t as bad as everyone thinks last year, in fact in some categories he did better than Campbell. I’d rather take a gamble on a previous two time Stanley cup champion who’s still only 28 years of age for the next two years oppose to locking in Campbell for the next 5 years at a cap hit 5+ million per year. Remember Campbell had one month where he was playing on another level that helped inflate his stats.

We’ll still need a solid backup and there’s plenty to choose from, Samsonov, Comrie, Holtby, etc.
