Well, we don't have a number one goalie under contract right now, so not having cap is a big problem. And then the issue of how to rebuild the third line with Kase, Engvall, (RFA) Mik (UFA) hitting free agency. And do you punt Nylander to pay Campbell/Husso/whomever? The reason I like a cap restructuring is you can re-do multiple roster pieces at different price points whereas if you just ripped one piece out to pay another position you're just creating holes.

You don't need to punt Nylander. That doesn't mean it is off the table, but it is not a necessity to be able to make the cap work either.

Mikheyev is likely gone. It sucks, especially after the year he had, but he is replaceable. Same with Kerfoot. As long as we are not overpaying guys, we can run back much of the same team under a 82.5 mill cap with the main change being that we may have some of our NHL ready prospects filling some spots on the 4th line... Which is something that any successful team needs to be able to do. Between Anderson, Simmonds, Spezza, Steeves, Abruzzese, Holmberg, Robertson, and any other cheap UFA we can find, we need to piece together a 4th line and one top 9 guy.

Worst case, we have to restructure our net or maybe replace Holl with Lyubushkin. Which may be something we do anyways.

The main thing is that we probably can't "improve" the team (on paper) and we need our young guys to step up. A Nylander move will be 100% a hockey move that management believes will improve our chances at winning.

Looks like Edmonton isn't gonna choke, good on them for getting over that hump.
Yes good for the Oilers for making it to the 2nd round, but in the McDavid era Edmonton has missed the playoffs 3 times and it took their 7th try to make it to the next round. Leafs have made the playoffs all 6 seasons with Matthews. If the Leafs had won tonight and the Oilers lost the script could've been entirely the opposite where Oiler fans would be losing their minds and Leafs celebrating finally getting over the hump.

Just goes to show how one series win or loss can make all the difference with how fans feel about the progress of their teams.

Nick Paul got too much toughness/swagger and not enough Defensive Corsi stats for Dubas lmao

Actually sad that it's half true

I don't want to get Nick Paul obsessed here. But if there's any ingredient that seems to be missing with the middle of the lineup, it's that we could use a couple of big body straight ahead player who plays with some bite.

Mikheyev, Engvall have done a pretty good job simulating those traits, but they're not naturally nasty competitors. I also wouldn't mind looking towards some Hockey Canada guys because that program usually finds these kind of players. I don't want to sound like a Don Cherry dinosaur, but local GTA guys would also be a good option because they're familiar with these playoff formats and the change in play style. Basically get Clifford/Simmonds type guys but not near retirement age.

Pray somebody wants him and it doesn't cost us a fortune to get rid of him or you bring him back and hope he can stay fit

Can't say I like either option

I think he stays as a 1B unless we are trading for a legit #1. In that case, he goes the other way.

In an ideal world, we'd dump Mrazek, sign Campbell, and have a young promising goalie backing him up.

But we're so f***ing bad at producing goalies.

Keeping them healthy seems to be the larger issue right now. Woll has looked really good, but he has also been hurt. Kallgren is 'meh', but he was not really a guy we "produced" anyways. Scott hasn't been healthy since his Memorial Cup run in 2019.

Honestly have no idea what our off-season looks like.

We’ll find out sooner rather than later if there will be management or coaching changes. Locker clean out should be Monday or Tuesday I imagine.

But man, not sure what else we are supposed to do.

I think Georgiev has looked good when he's stepped in for the Rangers in the playoffs. I still think he has potential. I'd try to get him as a 1B with Campbell as 1A. Although, money-wise, that may not work.

I've been thinking about it for awhile even before last night. I have no idea. Part of me wants to grenade the team, the other part of me wants to run it back. The big problem is that cap space is an issue to a certain degree to make any sort of secondary changes without making a big trade or two.

This was the best regular seasons Leafs team in a very long time... so how do you really go ahead and nuke it?

My only real untouchable players are Matthews, Marner and Rielly. There are other highly valued players too but those guys are my blocks. After that, I'm not sure really what happens.

The biggest X factor is Campbell and goaltending. That has to be priority #1.

Didn't think I'd be saying this, but keep Shanny, Dubas and Keefe

Trade #1
Mrazek, Kerfoot & 1st
for
Wood & Blackwell

Trade #2
Robertson, Holl & B Prospect
for
Crouse

Crouse - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Wood - Kampf - Mikheyev
Engvall - Douglas - Blackwell

They can't stay healthy. I have never seen so many long-term injuries to goaltenders like that.

Woll was on track but man... I don't know anymore.

Unfortunately for every diamond in the rough Dubas has unearthed he has given up two.

In: Bunting, Kampf

Out: Marchment, Moore, Barabanov, Durzi

Imagine this lineup:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Marchment-Tavares-Nylander
Moore-Kadri-Mikheyev
Engvall-Kampf-Grundstrom

Rielly-Brodie
Gio-Liljegren
Sandin-Durzi

Andersen (or you use the 1st rounder from the Foligno deal on Kuemper)
Kallgren

Marchment and Barabanov exploded in terms of development when they had chances here, especially Barabanov. Durzi and Moore were given up in big trades to upgrade the Leafs. So... I'm not sure what the point is.

The point you missed is that if Dubas found those players before, he can find them again. This is why he's a great GM. But he isn't perfect.

Would you rather have Campbell or Moore on this team this year and going forward? Then factor in the 2 picks on top of Moore.

Likewise would you rather have Durzi/Grundstrom/Bjornfot (or any of the fun names taken after him in 2019) or would you rather have Muzzin considering the success this team has had. I thought Muzzin was excellent this series and in every series he's played for the Leafs but what's the point if there's no success.

If Dubas/Keefe couldn't identify that Marchment/Barabanov were as good as they have been what gives you confidence they will retain the next iteration of these players?

I don't see how you can do anything this summer, even ice a team, without moving Mraz, Kerfoot and likely Holl.

Mraz is going to be really tough with a backended deal

Campbell. I like Moore but he's a mid-line winger. We have a lot of those.

I'd rather have Muzzin all these years providing us with physical and hard playing defensive minutes. Moving forward? Durzi would have been nice to have for sure.

The Leafs identified them in free agency and drafts that they were good players. They will keep identifying good players. It's almost like you'd prefer if the Leafs only drafted and signed bad players? I'm confused. They won't win every single trade and signing ever... no team ever does.

In the NHL when you want to make trades, sometimes you have to give up good players to get good players. Sometimes you give the players an opportunity somewhere else if they ask for it.

I don't think Durzi even cracks our roster, he's still behind Lilj on our depth charts IMO.

I like Moore a lot, but he's essentially replacing a Blackwell/Kase role
