The odds that your head coach and literally 20% of your playoff roster all randomly played for the same junior team isn’t a clear bias is silly.

There are what 200 teams they could have played for? OHL. Whl. Q. College. Europe.

It’s insane

Where are you going with this exactly?

Balcers has been an above average player the last 3 years and he puts up a decent amount of hits. Could be a solid 3LW at 1.55M in a world where Engvall doesn't play 3LW.

They may have trouble attracting free agents given that they're going to be playing in a 5ish thousand capacity college arena. Even if they're willing to pay, guys have to be willing to use lesser facilities

A guy who can’t get another contract would be happy to sign for 3.8, right?

People saying that dubas doesn’t target people from the soo. Or it’s over blown.

It’s pretty apparen

Is he not supposed to target people from the Soo, or guys he knows from previous points of his career? Do you think he would have not targeted Muzzin, Campbell, Bunting, etc. if they did not play for the Soo?

Even then, some of those guys were not even on the team when he was GM or Scout (Simmonds, Thornton, Sandin).

If there was no Soo connection with any of those players, nobody would say anything because they are fundamentally good moves. That is why people think it is overblown.

I'd say it's never really had a negative impact, so I don't know what the big deal is from that OP.

It's not like he's overly attached to some bottom 6 scrub that he had in Juniors.

Let's just charitably say that the Simmonds, Muzzin, and Thornton acquisitions have zero to do with being Soo alumni.

That's like saying Lou targets Leafs and Devils because he made moves for Palmieri, Greene, Komarov and Martin.

Sure. But if you're Arizona you may as well use that money for a guy who at least as some history of being a good player in the past than just give some AHL/ECHL level guy 3+ mil who you know will never live up to it

I suspect Arizona will be heading the trade route to hit that cap floor more so than free agency of overall

Oh they'll definitely go the trade route, but because there will likely be a bidding war for their cap space. I think Toronto has to pay something significant to get Mrazek to Arizona.

Absolutely.

I mean....people can pretend like Mrazek wasn't worth the contract, but one injury filled season doesn't change the fact that it was in the range.

Common sense isn't common at all anymore.

I mean every GM has some kind of connection to something like that. veteran GM's like Lou/Burke/Fletcher etc. all bring in players they have a former connection with.

People make it seem like Dubas is the only one..

hard agree. I could see Jarmo being very interested in our finnish prospects. Niemela I am not sure Dubas would do but Hirvonen + 1st could be a good deal.
Actually Jarmo haven't gone after Finns that much. In his staff he has few guys, but Siren worked in the NHL before. He is very business like and hard negotiator in trades, so we probably end up paying overprice.

Personality and knowing how people respond to different situations is important knowledge. That's why you easily sometimes lean on people you know. Campbell and Clifford were role-players so with them it's more important to know what kind of people they are. Though you'd assume that it was more of a coincidence that we got those players rather than going after SOO guys. LA was rebuilding and they had something that we needed and could acquire.

At the same time I think there would be tons of examples of trades not happening for reasons that acquiring GM knew the player and didn't want him because he knew him. Those just don't come out, because it's information you don't pass on to anyone.

Former NHL connections, yes.

This whole argument is the definition of a straw man. No one said that Dubas shouldn't sign players with a Soo connection. This all started with this comment:
He was an above average player for Tampa this year but his points and underlying numbers plummeted in Chicago. He hits a ton and is still fairly young as you mentioned. He also played in the Soo which makes him an ideal Dubas target on paper.
This wasn't derogatory.

its not like the year we 'agreed' to pick all Bellville Bulls players (89) with 3 picks in the 1st round ...that year we should have taken a Soo player we took Steve Bancroft with the 21st pick, and 22 was Adam Foote (from the Soo)

Hopefully we can sign Paul to replace Mik.
Fourth line try and sign ZAR, Lazar, Blackwell that would be a completely insane energy line and very good defensively.

send a nice package to Vancouver for JT Miller 50 percent retained.

Bunting Matthews Marner
Miller Tavares Nylander
Paul Kampf Engvall
Lazar ZAR Blackwell
Simmonds

Exactly.
Trying to remember who else he brought in besides Marner?
Nicolas Mattinen was a banger of a draft pick too.

Not to mention all of the scouts he brought with him from London. I seem to remember you being a big fan of Hunter. Seems he was doing the same thing.
