I see that Ian Mendes and Jonas Siegel have written a joint piece on the Athletic about the possibility of Murray to Toronto.

Anyone care to post what they discussed? I'm really not interested in trading for him but would sign him as a back-up for under a million if he was bought out.

I used to have an Athletic subscription but cancelled it once Siegel and Mirtle decided to post their podcast on Apple Podcasts again.

Someone answered but they basically said it's not gonna happen. Seems obvious. Only way it works if he Sens/Leafs engineer a way to retain 75% of that contract by using another team to eat even more than the 50% of the contract.

Ottawa hopefully buys him out though. Murray might not even be healthy to be able to be bought out either. I think he would be a very good signing on a cheap 1 year deal to see if he can bounce back.

Yes, he was. In fact, we had a whole discussion in this very forum about whether the Leafs should grab him at that time. But the consensus was that he was too unproven for the Leafs to ride at that time.
You should probably post a link at this point so they'll stop questioning you.

goalie is an odd position, sometimes a good goalie just loses it (Murray) and sometimes they develop late like Markstrom who didnt look like much his first 5-6 seasons
Binnington is another example, one year he's great, then he sucks, then gets his form back again... you need consistency in your goalie, its not the position you want a random skillset.
Mrazek is another great example, he's either hot and unbeatable, or he looks like an AHL backup goalie.
The hot and cold stuff is what I hate. I just want them to stop the shots that they should stop and not let in stinkers...if you can do that and not be bad on the PK...the goalie should be able to work here. We had extremes with Jack...either stopping everything or nothing...we can't have that. We need just B- level goaltending and we should be good.

I'm not arguing against a Gibson trade. The issue I have is that certain posters are willing to pay an absurd price for him.
If we had Gibson and his contract people would be saying we would have to attach a 1st to get rid of him. Some on here have lost their minds with what they want to give up for him. Does anyone really think he will play out his full contract at a high level?

Felix Potvin's biggest weakness was letting in the odd soft goal, and that didnt stop him from beating Cujo head to head when we were the underdog.
the odd bad goal is a pain, but, stopping the hard shots on a regular basis is what we need. last few years it seems every giveaway in a high danger area is an insta-goal ...we need someone that can stop some of those

Last time Vasilesky was in the AHL was when he was 21. He was waiver exempt at that point. He has never been in the AHL since so no idea where Vasilesky being on waivers came from.

If dubas goes into next year with a matt Murray/ 1-3 mil goalie like hill or stolarz / gorgieve than he needs to be fired. Not saying Gibson is end all be all of goalies but that'd the mold we need . Starter who can give u 50-60 games and a cheap back up 1.5 mil or under this 1a/ 1b stuff dosnt work . I'd take Murray at 850k as a project tho if he's bought out by ott. We r good at rebuilding players value / confidence

Unfortunately, that would have been YEARS ago, and I can't find it in the search system, so who knows at this point. But the goalie being discussed was waived by Tampa, and it wasn't Nabokov; the goalie was in his early 20's, and I swear it was Vasi.

He was sent to the minors 4 times when he was on a two way contract, but he never had to go on waivers.
It's possible that the person who posted the "Vasi on waivers" discussion didn't know that he was waiver-exempt at the time, but I do recall a discussion about whether the Leafs should try and grab him.

I just dont know who have really lost his mind

Some ones who thinking they can win a cup with goalies guy like Campbell, husso, holtby, Murray or whatever what is on market right now

Or

Some ones who thinking maybe its time to pay to finally get the biggest issues last 6 years solve and think you will have a better change to win a cup with a gamechanger as a goalie...

4 years of Sissons to play 3C at <3M would be awesome. Sissons has put up top 20 defensive impacts among forwards over the last 5 seasons, top 10 if you remove this past season where he had a down year. Tomasino put up almost the same AHL numbers at 19 Nylander did at the same age (1.1 PPG/0.45 GPG for Tomasino, 1.18 PPG/0.48 GPG for Nylander). Tomasino just put up top 20 defensive GAR among forwards this year (13th at 5v5) at 20 years old while also putting up 32 points. Both players shoot right which is a bonus. The 17th pick almost guarantees the Leafs get McGroarty. And the Leafs pick up 5.25M in cap space with Tomasino on ELC for 2 more seasons. This is a perfect Nylander proposal for future and present.

Edit: for reference because I know it will be brought up. Nylander put up 0.7 WAR during his 20 year old season in the NHL (2016-17). Tomasino put up 1.8 WAR in 400 less minutes. Tomasino's rookie season profiles very closely to Cirelli's rookie year where he was 21.

Points are not everything as this team has continuously taught us.
Considering they'll probably lose Forsberg maybe they'd go for that deal, but it's the cap space an solid contracts that intrigues me more than the players coming in, and of course the pick if we could nab McGroarty.

Vasilevsky was never on waivers.

The team traded Bishop to essentially had him the starters job.

Either way, Vas was never on waivers.

He hasn't played to a "high level" for 3 entire seasons

The better question is, can he still give you high level goaltending at all?

If he doesn't become high level again that contract is a noose

Gibson isn't solving the issue tho.

Gibson's a franchise level talent who has been wasted on a rebuilding team that dismantled everything around him over the past three years. If we had gotten Gibson instead of Andersen back in 2016 his career trajectory wouldn't have gone the way it has in Anaheim.

No one can say this with any degree of certainty.

Unless the issue is how quickly they will need to sell off and rebuild.

If Gibson does not have the Leafs on his NTC and it's a fair price to acquire him, Dubas needs to go for it. This also goes for any other good goalie. I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be. I have 0 concern whether or not he will compete hard.

I'm skeptical rolling the dice on another goalie hoping they have a bounce back year. If that is the case, I obviously want them to have the biggest bounce back season of their life, but it makes me feel uneasy.

Having a great goalie on this team will be a major boost.

I agree about the cap space. Simple it down Nylander+Mrazek for Tomasino+17th OA. Take the 10M in cap space.

I think if they keep Forsberg they would be more likely to go for this deal to give Forsberg another weapon to play with up front.
