Nylander has been the best forward in the playoffs. He had 8 pts in 7 games last year.
He definitely can be a game breaker when he wants. He does have the best cap hit of the big 4 but the leafs are capped out. The added cap in the off season helps. It's necessary to improve the team going forward. We have needed grit and role players with skill

If we looking at Chicago, go big:

Fleury
Hagel
Connor Murphy

I'm definitely a fan of this package. It's basically everything we're looking for right now. I have no idea what the return would look like but I would consider all options to make it happen. The tricky part is we need to move Mrazek out.

Maybe wait until the offseason, before you bury this team's playoff chances.

Actually, if anything, the last couple of games it seems Willy is the anchor. He looks completely disengaged. The amount of times he's just skated around the perimeter with the puck and either losing it at the blue line or ringing it around the boards when no one is there is the problem. You have to remember, Tavares is a grind it type player and if a teammate has the puck, 99% of the time Tavares is going to be by the net looking for a tip or rebound. When Willy is playing up to his standards, he's aggressive and always looking to shoot at the net or is atleast skating towards it to make a play. But for whatever reason, he hasn't been playing that way at all.
even still the kid would have at least another 5-8 pts if Taveras wasn't a complete bum on that line. Also tough to be interested when JT decides he's the next reincarnation of crosby and got 1v5 only to lose it every.single.time.

And yet, the guy had 5 goals in 7 games last playoffs and 8 points?

Why does the trade Nylander chat always come in waves? He's such a big part of this team.

Same reason there was Marner trade talks for half the season.

Cap allocation, team fit, and playing style are the reasons why his name (and others) continue to appear. I'm not advocating trading him, I'm just theorizing as to why some do. I can see both sides of the argument. IMO Marner's name has to be up there too in terms of offseason departures if we punch out another 1st round exit.

The concentration of cap allocation within these few players who all play the same / similar style of game is an experiment which is still in progress.

Nylander completely outproduces his contract. Yes, even as of today. This is a legit top line player on a bit of a cold / bad streak and people can't wait to trade him for... *checks notes* JT Miller... *checks notes* HAGEL AND FLEURY? ...*checks notes* cap space. He's not a physical specimen, he's not going to crunch people in corners. That doesn't remove how good he is and what he does. One of the best transition players in the NHL and can take over games.

When the team couldn't score, when Marner looked lost and people couldn't wait to trade him, Nylander was playing out of his mind and basically him and JT were the only 2 forwards scoring or doing anything. That was just a few months ago.

At the end of the day, every player can be traded if it makes you better. Sure. But he's not someone you want to just dump.

It is and always has been a Nylander vs Marner thing. When Marner isn't producing the trade Marner people come out. When it's Nylander's turn to struggle.....you know. And it always goes back to the laziness, disinterested, fly-bys, floating...I don't understand how people can know what's going on in this man's head. Is he really in don't care mode right now? Or is he frustrated with having to carry around a 200lb man and his 11 million dollar bag of money on his back every game? Does he have a nagging injury that's bothering him right now? Is he just in a slump?

He has 2G and 1A in the last 5 games. And 50 points in 56 games this year. I think most people were saying they would be happy with Nylander scoring 25 to 30 goals and having 70 to 80 points. He's still right there. He should easily hit 25 and still possibly 30. His assists are down but Tavares just can't seem to find the back of the net. And I'm not crapping on Tavares but he's really not pulling his weight on that line and he's not playing anywhere near his contract. If they need to be separated then they should be. But not at the expense of moving him out. That creates a huge hole. Maybe they should drop Tavares down to the third line for a bit. Maybe it's time to make Nylander a center.

I would do:

kerfoot
Mrazek
Lilly
2022 first round pick
Robertson
Hirvonen

for that package of Fleury, Hagel and Murphy

A lineup of

Bunting Matthews Marner
Hagel Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Engvall Spezza Simmonds

Rielly Murphy
Muzzin Brodie
Sandin Lybushkin

Fleury
Campbell

is clear cut a Stanley cup contender and probably the only way we will win a few rounds this year

Too rich for my blood. Fleury may not be a huge upgrade on Soup and is a pending UFA. Hagel is probably a more polished Robertson with some sandpaper. Murphy is an upgrade but I think we can get more for that package of players.

Well of course, right? Who on earth would suggest just dumping one of the big 4? If (big IF) we trade them I'm sure we're after full value.

I’d give up stuff in that package, but not anyone named Knies or Topi.

Im fine parting with picks and Robertson if need be here.

Been thinking for a while that this is a perfect package but we just don't have the ammunition to get it done. When you combine two teams differences in values with needing to take back salary and them retaining salary it's just too tough of a move to make.

I like Lybushkin a lot...fit in very well and he's translated pretty well from what I saw in Arizona to here.

Rielly-Brodie
X-X
Sandin-Lybushkin

Dermott and Holl don't fit anymore and Liljegren may be able to get us a guy we need right now.

Is Robert Hagg another Lyubushkin type to target?

No, not at all, he's just bad.

If you wanted no frills, Mark Pysyk would be nice. You'd want to grab a really nice LD to go with him. Unless Muzzin was guaranteed to return to his old self...you'd need someone like a Hampus Lindholm.

Liljegren is just scratching the surface of his capabilities. He's already a pretty good mid pairing defenseman for the foreseeable future. Solid skater, solid skill and solid defensively. I was a little down on him a few months ago because the Leafs refused to play him but now... I don't know why anyone would want him traded anytime soon.

Dermott is the perfect depth defenseman going into the playoffs. Especially with how injuries can pile up.

He's been dining out on that for a while now. IMO, what happened in last years playoffs is absolutely meaningless today.
He's almost a ppg player even with Tavres struggling hard. He's a huge matchup threat for us on that 2nd line to both score and set up plays. He's also been a pretty consistent playoff performer each year. I could care less if he looks disengaged for a few games in the middle of the regular season.

We are a better team with him than without him and we should be looking to add another threat on that left side rather than replacing him.

I’ve mentioned Pysyk a few times around here. I think he’d be a solid, and probably reasonably low cost option.

Not interested in moving Liljegren. Young, costa controlled asset, who looks solid and is only scratching the surface of his potential. He and sandin are untouchable to me unless we are swinging for the fences on a move. Even then not sure

I'd agree with all that, I'm just saying that this has nothing to do with last years playoffs.
He's been 'disengaged' for more than a few games though.

I agree that adding is the best approach but I can see those that think the team needs a greater shake up thinking moving him would provide that.
