There's no worthwhile route to acquiring a goalie right now, in-season. Both in LA and TOR, Campbell has at least shown the ability to string together 20 games of truly elite play (.930sv%+), which can be enough to win with. Not to mention he's actually shown he can perform well, in aggregate, during a playoff series. Just load manage him and give starts to Kallgren/Woll in a rotation as there's only a sliver of the season left. The team will play inspired hockey in front of those kids, as opposed to Mrazek who is a confidence vacuum.

Your other options are expensive, old rentals who you'd be expecting to adjust to the system in a dozen games or so. Recipe for a disaster either way, so go with the more cost effective option and the devil you know.

What I like about Varlamov specifically though is that he has the extra year. Even if you bring Campbell back next year, it works out well for us. Varlamov expires at the same time Woll should be ready to take over, and then you can roll with Campbell/Woll or you have to replace Campbell with someone better.

Varlamov-Campbell is a solid tandem for this year and next. If Campbell falters, Varlamov is someone who has been reliable enough to stop the bleeding.

Funny enough….

Why not Craig Anderson? We can fit him. Playing well. Has played in playoffs. No cap. He can fit with 3 goalies.

I don’t see a 1st for fleury when he was had for literally nothing.

Won’t be intimidated by the market

Im doubling down on our need to get Soucy or someone very similar.
Big body, keeps the net front clear, skates well, and can play both sides.

A top 4 of (assuming healthy)
Reilly-Brodie
Muzzin-Soucy
is probably the best top 4 we have had in at least a decade.
Sandin-Lyub is a very good third pair.

I still have faith that Campbell will be ready for the playoffs, and be able to provide us at least league average goaltending. Especially if he has a bit better of a d-core in front of him.

The other piece to me is Tavares-Nylander seem a bit out of sorts. I dont know if its bringing in a good two-way F (Lehkonen?) or someone who is a bit more feisty (Comtois?) but right now they just seem off. I really like what Kerfoot has brought to the 4th line, as its very obvious he brings a good amount of tools to create a mismatch against other 4th lines.

If you want two pieces in one deal, Comtois+Manson could be a 'big swing' type move

Or say screw it, lets just see if we can outscore our issues and go all in on a Giroux move. He instantly makes our top 6 pretty much the best in the league. Also lets you move Tavares over to the wing, where I think he will look better.

What GM in their right mind is going to take Mrazek and his contract with his play right now???? It only happens if Dubas sweetens the pot with a pick or prospect.

Could do worse than Mrazekk if your team was at the cap floor and you wanted to win a tank race...

If we can patch our holes cheaply, I'm all for it, but the way the team is trending it doesn't feel like an all in season at all. Why not just save our ammunition and take whatever playoff performance we can get out of this group? I want to win, but I don't want to over invest in a folly in 2022 just to hurt our chances in 2023, 2024 and beyond.

I think the low acquisition cost for Fleury (for Chicago) was based on VGK being in a cap conundrum/having an inordinate amount of cap allocated to goaltending, essentially deciding in favour of Lehner by virtue of re-signing him to the deal that they gave him, and Fleury's limited NTC (and the potential lack of suitors that may have derived from that). That said, acquiring him for that projected asking price only makes sense for a Cup contender that believes he's the missing piece, or for a team that is essentially certain of being able to re-sign him.

They are top In the league still goaltending has deserted them. With of course the lack of clearing thr crease. I don’t see how you don’t try to improve as long as you have Matty.

I think you have too. I wondered if they are saying. Muzz is coming back to lower expectations about cap.

I think they probably patch And ride jack then decide if they need to go for a big fish like gibby.

Option b i still think is drieger. Change of scenery for both. A drieger and gio swap would work.

Exactly this. They ask for that they can stuff it.

Its an asking price. You always start high.

At the end of the day, either they take BOA from a team Fleury wants to go to, or they get nothing for him at the end of the year. Fleury has a .908 on the year and has been dreadful lately.

Chicago doesn’t exactly have a whole lot of leverage.

Look while I know this will likely never happen but do any of the TML faithful seriously believe we have a chance of making some noise in the playoffs this year? I certainly don’t and think Management should sell some assets to do a quick reload in the off-season.

Maybe grab some young kids with some upside or players in need of a change of scenery. Go after a proper goalie in the off-season and take it from there.

Players that could get some decent assets/picks IMO:

Kerfoot
Dermott
Holl
Mikheyev
Mrazek-likely have to give up something to get rid of bit you never know

We just aren’t good enough, simple as that and that’s okay but it’s time to look into the mirror real hard.
They are obviously screwed, and anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial.

A soft sell off would be healthier than an all-in deadline on such a shaky looking team. But I think the best course of action is just a minor patch job with any random goalie and maybe get a defenseman with term. Keep the high picks, go as far as you can in the playoffs and be ready for a big retool in the offseason.

The Leafs still need a 1D and a 1G. If they can they should try and shed salary to use in the off season to fill those holes.
That means one of Tavares or Nylander has to go.

Why do these 3 names come to your mind when someone mentions playoff type players? That's your delusion, not his. I didn't see him specify these are the players he wants.
No that was Dubas actual plan when he went after those guys last year.

They can’t afford to trade any picks.

Seems like he is a lot like Taylor Hall last year.

Hall had a full NMC, costs 8 mill, came off of a rough season but had prestige and some upside.

Hall effectively went for a late 2nd with 4 mill of retention (I am saying Lazar and Bjork cancel each other out).

As for "dumping Mrazek", I am looking around and I am seeing the price going from soft dump (i.e. it costs little to nothing, or even getting a small plus in return) for guys like Nuutivaara and Gudbranson to a 2nd + 7th for a guy like Gostisbehere, but Gostisbehere was a major liability for 3 years and had a 4.5 mill cap hit. Mrazek technically has 2.5 years left, but I don't think the extra half a year is going to cost anything more than the 2 years those guys had left.

So I would say, if a GM likes Mrazek, we can dump him for nothing or get a late round pick for him without retention. Maybe take on some expiring contracts with a bit of fully buriable money on it (i.e. Dzingel). Worst case, you are likely looking at a mid-round pick or prospect to dump him to a team that can use him but maybe doesn't love him, which can include a number of teams like Chicago and the Islanders.

:leafs
G Marc-Andre Fleury (50% retention)

:hawks
G Petr Mrazek
C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev
2nd round pick 2022 (TOR)

SDA (or a similar caliber prospect) is your Mrazek dumping price. The 2nd is whatever you think Fleury at 50% is worth. Maybe they prefer Dermott. Maybe they prefer another prospect instead of the 2nd.
