Not true at all. The goaltenders factor for the majority of the discrepancy but the blueline still shares blame. We don't lapse as much as a team like the Kraken who have a better 5v5 xGA/60 than us, but our goaltending is so bad that the combination of our lapses + goaltending is sinking our GA/60 extremely fast. Even if our goaltending went to average or good, our D still needs to clean itself up or we're not going to get an elite GA/60 which matters more in the playoffs than xGA. Our 5v5 GA/60 is so bad now you don't have to restrict the games anymore to get it in the bottom 10. You can take the entire season now. The days of sparing the D have come to an end. There's just no way unless you're going to blindly follow the xGA.

So basically what I said. I didn't remove all the blame from the players. I never once said Lijegren or the core are great defensively or perfect. I'm just saying the big discrepancy of goals against versus expected goals against is just that.

I think you're confusing me saying Liljegren is good versus the team being great defensively. It's an average team defensively right now blasted by bad goaltending. We're talking about going from Liljegren to X or Y or Z wouldn't probably be much better because Liljegrens been solid already.

Soucy for Holl.
Dermott for Comtois.
Mikheyev for Lemieux.
Kerfoot for Domi.
Sign McBain (Aug 15) and Meyers (NCAA UFA).

Not saying do all of them or that they would be 1 for 1. Just some framework.

Correct my friend. Came at you too hot there. We're on the same page.

While I agree that Lily has had dreadful performances by the goalies behind him, stats like onIceSv% (he has a terrible on ice SV%) aren't purely due to the goalies performance and are strongly influenced by the defenders play as well. Also if it was purely due to goaltending you would see more leafs in that largest discrepancy list.

Muzzin is up there.

Rielly's numbers have been able to hold up a little bit overall because he was absolutely elite in the first half, but if we are looking at 2022, we are looking at an actual GA/60 which doubles their expected.

Muzzin: 2.33xGA/60; 4.73 GA/60
Rielly: 2.71xGA/60; 4.27 GA/60
Liljegren: 2.11 xGA/60; 4.58 GA/60

The rest are still fairly bad (except for Holl/Dermott), but it is less than a difference of 1.

Mikheyev is significantly better than Lemieux, and Lemieux is a POS. I don't even think his teammates like him. He is a 4th line pest who is not even good enough to play on a 4th line.

I would not do Kerfoot for Domi either. Kerfoot's defensive value alone exceeds anything Domi has brought the past few years, and Kerfoot is not a rental.

I would do the Comtois one. I would do the signings. The Soucy one is fine value-wise, but I think we need a RD more than a LD.

I would also be willing to trade for McBain's rights if the price comes down.

I like Mikheyev and Kerfoot. I'm just fearful that this team is too soft again.

I don't think Lemieux and Domi are going to help in that regard though. Pests are not tough. They are annoying, and if they don't have skill to back it up (like Marchand and Bunting), then they are really just useless.

Not married to those two options. Just throwing some names around to see what people think.

I don't think the Leafs touch anything TBH unless Robertson is not good enough or something can be done in net.

Interesting though I guess it doesn't surprise me that the majority of leaf defenders have a worse GA than xGA. The team in general has worse GA, my guess is bad goalie performances across the board and limitations of xGA to properly capture things like odd man rush chances

Soucy has been playing RD and was last night with Gio. He looked good on his off side.

I hope they look into him. It avoids the whole RD/LD issue if you can get one who can play either.

Guessing the price would be like a conditional 2nd or so? Who would you trade as the defense is already packed

Dermott/Holl + prospect or pick?

Tough one to evaluate as Soucy has term left. You'd get him for 2 runs.

Campbell to Oilers then get Varlamov

Make it happen Kyle

Also those wanting Camtois. Hes totally banged up. You wont get the most out of him

I was an board with bringing in Gio until I watched the game last night. Forget the penalties… he looked his age. For a short run maybe but not as convinced now. Think there are better options.

With Winnipeg being out of a playoff spot, Andrew Copp would be a fantastic addition. Solid two-way game, good size and strength and always seems to hover between 53 and 55% in the faceoff circle. He’s a pending UFA but definitely someone I’d be interested in re-signing. Matthews, Tavares, Copp, Kampf down the middle would be great.

Oh okay, just checked his contract. Can the leafs afford to add anyone at the moment if Muzzin is coming back or do they have to match dollar in for dollar out?

That’s what you guys keep saying. You said the same about zadorov and grunBranson but both are playing a big part for the success of the flames.

Defenseman like those guys bring an element that is 100 per cent needed in the playoffs when the refs put their whistles away.

Chariot or someone of his nasty nature would replace soft as marshmallow Holl

Liligren who needs to get stronger

Dermott who is too small to be physical

Year after year it's the same shit in the playoffs but seems like nobody learns. Playoffs are a whole different animal.

I like Kerf as well. but not at $3.5M. He is still in his peak years and is a bit of a Swiss Army knife but there are 12 goal scorers out there for a lot less money that bring things the club needs just as much. If the cap situation was better you keep him but this is still a team that needs firewagon hockey to win most nights and that doesn't take you far in the playoffs without great goaltending which they don't have. Whether you call the Leafs soft or one dimensional or just a club that doesn't finish their checks they don't look like a playoff ready lineup.

Not a bad idea, though Kampf has anchored a very steady, solid third checking line all year with a mix of Engvall, Kase, Mikheyev, and even Kerfoot.

Still a bottom 6 of:

Mikheyev-Copp-Kase
Engvall-Kampf-Spezza

Might give a bit more offense.

Copp might cost a lot though. and he may cost more than we'd want to pay in UFA. But would be a #3c upgrade.

Wasn't advocating standing pat on D. I'm more on the Carson Soucy train now. He can clear the netfront (6'5"), skate, shoot, and move the puck.

3 out of those 4 are a real struggle for Chiarot.

We have a 6 foot 5 dman who is as soft as a marshmallow

Just because saucy is big doesn’t mean he is tough

We need hard hitting crease clearers so our pathetic goalies can see the puck and not let 5 goals in because they were deflected
