it still depends on his injury. The Leafs were in a similar situation with Andersen last year, but he returned like the game before the playoffs and they didn't really get to take advantage of it. But just with how lenient the NHL's been with Tampa and Vegas, the Leafs should go for it and dare the NHL to say something
If any team is going to get slapped on the wrist for something like this it will be the leafs so I would be careful about being too obvious with it lol

Concussions are really tricky. Muzzin just sat out a month with one and is going back into concussion protocol only a few games back. With about 9 weeks left of the regular season, it shouldn’t be shocking to see Muzzin sit out for that period with back to back concussions.

Also Miller would be an amazing addition but with Bruce as the Nucks’ coach, I highly doubt they move Miller unfortunately. I think those are all just rumours to get some click bait and nothing more.

I mean with a head issue and Muzz having a couple concussions so close to one another, it would be understandable for us to take it slow with him. He needs to be really careful and make sure he's 100% before playing again. That could take him till April

Him or JT were the 2 players you could try LTIR with. Both veterans with milage and nothing to prove in the regular season. I think it's worth the try

If it was a broken leg with a standard recovery timeline I'd be worried but concussions don't care about timelines. He could feel good to go one day and back to headaches and nausea the next. There's no reason to rush him back until it's abundantly clear there are no lingering symptoms for a healthy amount of time to confirm it's not a fluke good day or two.

LTIRetirement is more likely than an early return imo, Muzz has his cups and enough money for his grandkids to not have to work. I wouldn't blame the guy for prioritizing a healthy life after hockey over putting himself in harm's way.

LTIR relief works by calculating a new upper limit for teams, so the closer you are to the cap when you use LTIR, the more relief you get

The closer you are to the cap ceiling when a player in put on LTIR the more cap relief you get. Capfriendly has a good explanation though it gets pretty odd and complicated. That's why the leafs traded for David Clarkson last year or whatever. So they could get snug to the cap then put both players on LTIR gaining full relief (or close) for both players

Awesome thanks guys

Muzzin i think you could probably get away with but not JT. Muzzin was likely going to be put on LTIR anyways so extending it isn't as bad.

Yeah Tavares isn't possible right now since there isn't an actual injury keeping him out. I meant moreso if he was in this situation I'd be fine with LTIRing him till the playoffs as well. You couldn't really do that with the likes of Marner/Matthews.

I'm a huge fan of Robertson and I'd be willing to move him before Niemela.

Niemela is already playing in a men's league and putting up numbers that few guys have in that league.

Absolutely it may not translate to the NA game so that's the gamble you take.

I just think having a guy with that caliber on D, I don't think Leafs have had that in a while.

I think Sandin and Liljegren are going to be pretty good... I think this guy will be better.

So again personally I wouldn't but I'm like everyone else here, just an armchair GM.

I think the 1st, a roster player and a good prospect would be enough but I think many teams if he is available will drive that price up possibly.
Sandin liljegren Niemela with Rielly as a stable vet is a nice future D to work with. Inject a couple of bigger bodied veteran stabilizers and it could easily be a real strength in a few years.

Ilya Sorokin would be very high up in my list as well for this trade deadline. The Islanders are probably not looking to move him but if there’s a position to overpay in, it’s the goaltending position.

Definitely some very talented players/prospects right there but those 4 still don’t give me a ton of hope moving forward. Not sure if it’s the fact that those 4 together are still on the smaller side or if it’s just way too offensive from the blueline.

The Leafs have loaded the gun.

Remains to be seen if they pull the trigger and make an addition or 2 to the roster.

Exactly. I really would rather not trade Robertson either still. Our LW could really use him but if it was for a big name then you have to use him forsure over the other guys I think.

Good explanation for all of that. Seems Leafs are definitely putting themselves to be bigger players for the trade deadline now.

Tough to know how much because if Muzzin ever comes back before the playoffs then they can't do anything too crazy. I could see him gone until then though.

Are there any serviceable expiring cap dumps on contenders looking for cap space?

After the big additions(hopefully), the Leafs may have some money left over and can add serviceable depth while accumulating back some draft picks.

To Toronto: Ilya Sorokin
To Islanders: 2023 1st Rounder, Petr Mrazek, Travis Dermott, Alex Steeves

Would this package get Sorokin?

True. Now that they're in that boat anyway may be worth exploring.

So with muzzin on ltir they're absolutely going to kucherov this so that's.....

$5.6 mill in dollar for dollar caphit at the deadline.

...$11.2m if 50% retention.

...$22.4m if double retention.

Remember this is even better than the kucherov situation because they were already using all his capspace from before the season so it didn't actually give them a lot of room at the deadline.

Nope that package would not work. Isles would laugh at us for proposing this. They would probably want 1st Sandin and Knies.
