We don't need a top 6 winger. We have 3 forwards making over 11M. We need a defender and some faith in our all star goalie.

Leafs need a RHD top 4 defender that makes the team hard to play against.

They need both. If Dubas is as busy at the TDL as some predict, he probably gets both. With cap space opening up if Muzz goes on LTIR, he'll be shopping hard.

I think WSH ends up the front runner for MAF, if they acquire him does Samsonov or Vanecek provide any upgrade on what we have? Obviously would have to move Mrazek elsewhere.

We're not doing anything on the goaltending front, more likely to bolster the D and hope we give up less chances. There are only so many pieces to move mid season.

Leafs are a playoff team, maybe good enough to win a round but not going deep with this current makeup. I think we're in a bad spot, desperately need a top 6 F and top 4 D. Both are going to cost a fortune, Dubas doesn't win a round and he's gone so he might just throw caution to the wind and take the over payment route.
The team has been giving up among the least chances in the NHL even during these last 2 months. The issue is that since December 1st Jack has an under .890 save percentage and Mrazek hasn't been any better.

Joe Woll would be an upgrade on our current goaltending performances.

However, to answer your question, if they were good enough to be starters on a contender, why is Washington (a contender) in the market for a starting goalie?

I mean isn't that the whole reason we got Lyubushkin?

This team has Holl, Liljegren, Brodie, and Lyubushkin at RD. This is not a team that needs another defenseman, and especially not another RD.

You've listed off one second paring defender and three bottom pairing defenders.

Lyubushkin is not a top 4 D

Honestly, there’s probably a deal to be made. Leafs objectively have some interesting prospects up front and on D, and Miller fits exactly what the Leafs need. Could be win-win

1st, prospect 1, prospect 2, Kerfoot for JT Miller. Would be the rough framework I imagine

Canucks could probably move him at the draft for a decent pick

That is a lot for Miller, unless we are not giving up any top prospects... But even then, that is a lot for Miller.

I'd give them at most what we gave up for 1.5 years of Muzzin.

Samsonov has had a rough year and Vanecek has been injured, there was some smoke around Washington and MAF meaning one will shake loose. Apparently Habs have had interest in Samsonov.

You really have to have faith that JT Miller is the difference between us winning the cup or not for this price to be worth it. Miller only has one more year after this.

100%. We are getting league-worst goaltending the last two months. Everything else... Not a problem most nights. Maybe some nights, but not nearly enough to warrant a lot of the overreactions we are seeing right now. Watch some other teams on a regular basis, and they go through the same crap throughout the season and most go through it just as often, if not more often, than we do.

Let's be honest, if we had even .900 goaltending from our goalies right now (which is painfully mediocre and nowhere near good enough), we'd be winning most of the time.

Yeah both goalies have sucked but nobody can sit here and tell me this D core is good enough to win anything. Far too easy to play against.

We're not changing out goalies mid season, so improve the overall D (team defense) and hope Campbell can figure it out is all we can do.

Well we need someone now. Samsonov is young enough to make sense for Washington.

He is not good enough right now to make sense for us.

Both Samsonov and Vanecek certainly have the potential to be better, and unlikely guys like MAF, they are young and cost controlled. Thinking beyond this season, they may shore up our goaltending for the next little while.

The safe traditional moves never work for Dubas, he generally does well when he thinks outside the box.

If you are talking about replacements beyond this year, then sure.

Right now, I don't think they help us. We can worry about next year at the end of this year.

if they can't win with Miller, they can't win without Miller. Prospects don't really matter when their window is now

Ive been pretty outspoken that I think our focus should be on forward rather than our defense.

there’s a couple forward options I like, but JT Miller seems like an obvious fit.

the fact that we have him for two chances is also a plus

No disagreements here. It's been a lack of scoring that's killed us the last few playoffs. I'm terrified of spending those assets on Miller though unless we also upgrade in net with the way Mrazek and Campbell have been for the last 3 months.
