Ritchie started off horribly (and has looked somewhat better over the last 3-4 games) but I don't think we should discount that he might be exactly what we need on a 4th line come playoff time.

If we can dump his salary in a way that makes sense I'm all for it but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we had him on the 4th line come playoff time. Obviously, not what you want from 2.5 mill AAV though.

This upcoming cap crunch is tricky. Wherever they subtract from they're going to need to add a similar player at the deadline. If they trade Dermott/Holl, they're going to need another defenceman at the deadline. If they subtract Ritchie/Engvall, they're going to need to add a forward at the deadline.

That's what I'm thinking, it'll help them accumulate space & gain assets for that move, while also developing what they have right now.

It's becoming pretty clear to me that Holl is that guy they need to upgrade on & it doesn't have to be done simultaneously.

Not really. We added Clifford. We have Anderson. We have Robertson and Amirov. We can sign Ho-Sang if we needed him. If we need a center, we can move Kerfoot to center where he played the entire time last playoffs.

If we really want to be bold, we can also use Holmberg (who is more of a defensive type guy but still has 21 points in 25 SHL games this year after being SHL Playoff MVP last year), who can line up at center.

I doubt there are very many, if any, depth guys we can add who are better than that bunch.

Of course, I am still holding out hope that at least one of Brooks or Amadio can make their way back to us at some point.

When a guy like Marner misses time, it would have been nice to have Ho-Sang on an NHL contract to be able to call up. Could have injected some more skill into the top 6 tonight.

If it is only for a game or two, I don't think it really justifies signing him. If Marner is out longer term, then maybe.

I wouldn't mind seeing Anderson in the top 6 though. Nothing against Simmonds, but it lets you keep the 4th line together, and unlike Simmonds, Anderson is used to playing a lot of minutes (on a skill line no less) this year.

I doubt they'd do it but if Isles continue to suck even once healthy, Mayfield would be a huge pickup for the Leafs, would not be cheap though.

Yeah, Holl out for futures replaced by Mayfield is pretty much a picture perfect move for this team. Opens up 600k in cap space, adds a playoff type defender who is the perfect partner for Sandin.

But like you said, hard to see Lou doing it. They'd be going into next season with d of Pelech/Pulock/Dobson/ ????

Present struggles aside I wouldnt bet against there being a fairly team friendly extension sitting in a drawer waiting for July 1

I still wouldn't trade Justin Holl. I really do think the best Muzzin has looked this year was when Liljegren was beside him. Go to that, with Rielly and Brodie as usual, and Sandin, Dermott and Holl rotate on the third pairing.

I do see the reasoning behind trading him, however as long as we acquire another depth d-man to be that 7th guy rotating in.

We have Menell, but not sure he's 100% what we will need. (and he's only played 8 games so far this year).

And I don't think anyone wants to consider Biega or Dahlstrom playing down the stretch or in the playoffs lol. I am still confused as to why they were signed

Maybe close to the end of the year but if JHS comes up he probably has to stay or be lost on waivers. I think there is a puzzle with Engvall and a returning Mikheyev they need to sort out first. With all of their bottom 6 guys except Ritchie producing something right now its tough to make any changes because we aren't even at the 1/3 mark. A bottom sixer gets hurt, or someone goes on a 20 gamer chiller and cuts their own throat, or someone is thrown into a Dermott/Holl trade and that will create Ho Sang's chance. Agree he might have some top 6 value but they need to have a free roster spot to give him a place to stay long term.

I'd trade Holl in the blink of an eye for reasons mentioned before.

Rubins is the more suitable replacement and the org. is high on him transitioning to the NHL. It's been mentioned numerous times on the Athletic and by names like Kloke that there's a desire to get him a look at some point this year and are stylistically molding him like Muzzin (won't ever be as good though). Significantly better skater than Holl and manages pucks better too with similar physical presence/size.

Run with internal replacements like Rubins/Menell as the 7/8D until you know what they are, and if it delivers sub par results, acquire a cheaper-than-Holl RHD at the deadline (e.g. Bortuzzo) that will cost a late round pick.

definitely not. I like Dobson but he hasn't been great in a sheltered offensive role the past two seasons. That could change with the system we run but not giving up Robertson to do so. Lou would likely be looking for veteran NHL help anyways.

not as high on Robertson, I just don’t see him having the strength to make it through full NHL seasons. So I don’t know how effective he would be long term. He’s a hell of a player don’t get me wrong, I hope they can figure out a way to help him develop more post injury.

also don’t want to be labelled a hater, we have a surplus of high end wing prospects, if we could trade 1 for a Legit Center or RHD kind of like Drouin for Sergachev that would be amazing

It doesn't make as much sense for us because we just had a RD graduate in Liljegren and Neimela is tearing it up in Liiga, also some of our LD can play RD in a pinch so I'm not sure it's an area of desperate need

Now the center position is a completely different ànimal, I'm listening on that one
