Wonder if Guerin is trying to be “in” on Horvat next offseason.
More like figuring out ways to sign or extend former Penguin bottom 6/bottom pairing players before telling us all how the numbers just don't make sense and there's no way to have made it work while not extending Boldy.

Probably a healthy mix of the two where he wants Horvat but can't stomach trading a 36 year old winger with one year left on his contract and a fourth liner to get him (and then settles for signing a former Pens bottom 6 guy).

Rodrigues to the Aves on a very cheap $2M deal. Pretty much no FAs left that I’d be interested in, so I guess hope Guerin uses the cap space to take on 1 year cap dumps. Kind of crazy to have $4M in space when you’ve already got $12M in dead cap.

Maybe Sonny Milano?

Maybe Sonny Milano?

On a 1yr, 1M or less deal, I wouldn't be against it, but where would he even play?

Kaprizov-Hartman-Zucc
Jost-Gaudreau-Boldy
Foligno-Ek-Greenway
Duhaime-Dewar-Steel

I guess he's just as adequate as Jost or Steel at the moment, but that pretty much guarantees Rossi has no chance to make the team barring injuries down the line. I think I'd rather just roll with the flex guys we have now and let Rossi win a spot.

I think for better or worse, Milano was in the same grouping as Steel and Rordrigues, and management chose Steel.

Going into the season with no additional moves will sum up a shitty off-season. Should’ve just re-signed Fiala and dumped Goli and Jost:

Zucc - Hartman - Kap
Boldy - Rossi - Fiala
GREEF
Dewar - Gaudreau - Duhaime
Steel

Brodin - Dumba
Middleton - Spurgeon
Merrill - Addison

Fleury
Gus

200K in cap

Don’t care that there’s only 1 extra skater. Team with 12M in dead cap should expect that situation. Iowa isn’t far away either. As long as that above roster is possible, Guerin failed this offseason. He also failed the previous offseason by electing arbitration instead of re-signing Fiala long term on a cheaper deal.

Don’t care about the following season either. Trade Zucc and don’t re-sign Dumba if the financials don’t work. With the cap expected to rise sooner than expected, making the best team now should’ve been a priority.

Could have even moved Dumba this summer to have even more space, and possibly still kept Goligoski or Jost.

Not a good couple of off-seasons for Guerin, who has largely done nothing.

Guerin didn't want to sign back Fiala. He made that clear. But at this point it's like beating a dead horse

I'd prefer to hold on to the cap space and then re-evaluate at the TDL.

Not directed particularly at anyone but just want to make sure this side of the argument isn't drowned out - I'm quite happy with what BG has done over the past few seasons.

Same here...and I think the majority of the fanbase agrees with us. Not to say that he's been perfect, but he's done a good job.

Maybe he swings a trade of Horvat for Gaedreau +. If VAN needs some cap relief getting a cheap defensive C wouldnt hurt since they have Miller and Petterson.

It remains to be seen what kind of impact saddling us with a ton of dead cap during Kaprizov's prime years will do to the team long term. Maybe we come out of it - young, talented and cost controlled and can entice him to stay longer term. Or maybe he gets sick of losing for 5 straight years, bails and we have to hit the reset button again on the franchise.

I do wonder if Kaprizov would have signed had BG bought out Parise and Suter prior to getting a contract done with him.

Billy absolutely botching the Fiala situation will easily go down as the most pathetic display of ineptitude any wild GM put out there. He’s really done a poor job.

We will see if you feel that way when Faber walks into the Top 4 and makes an elite shutdown pair with Brodin.

Also what’s the point of signing Steel and keeping Jost if you won’t give them a look. Between those two and Rossi, we didn’t have a spot for Rodriguez. We are all set when it comes to smallish bottom 6 Cs

I'm happy that BG didn't sign ER. Would far rather see what we have in the system, and in any event. Rodrigues is not going to be the difference between us being a Cup contender of not.

I don't mind going into the season with cap space. Leaves us flexibility to make a deal during the year, or at the TDL, whether it be for a player, taking on a cap dump and getting a pick(s), or retaining on a player we send away.

Don't forget signing Greenway.

BG clearly did not like something about Fiala, or Fiala's game. I am of the opinion that talent like Fiala's is hard to find, while the Jost's, Goligoski's and Greenway's(to a lesser extent) are a dime a dozen....but hey... the locker room!

It was also blindingly obvious that Boldy and Fiala had great chemistry. IMO, you don't take that for granted. BG more or less has.

I think it more likely that it be a Dumba for Horvat swap. VAN needs top 4 RHD.

Trouble with that scenario is that Horvat will need to be signed, and he won't come cheaply, just as we are entering cap hell.

he might not be very cheap but if we did indeed rock a 1 for 1 with Dumba we have plenty to resign him. He isnt exactly a point producing monster so his price should be lower than Millers which I do think with Dumba out the door we could make room for along with our 4m cap space we have currently. I dont know how much of an upgrade on Ek Horvat is but having 2 C who can actually play the position and play it well doesnt hurt, plus he has played well with offensive players so slotting him not to Kap should be quite simple.

You want to trade Dumba for Horvat.

Russo: Dumba has little market value based on failed trade attempts,
they'll probably just let him walk next year.

So who's wrong?

Nobody is wrong. just because there is not a huge market doesnt mean a deal around dumba for horvat is impossible. maybe a 1 for 1 swap is not how it will work and they dont like that so we have to add a little but if their need for RHD is a big need Dumba can certainly help fill it.

I'm 100% convinced that the market for Dumba isn't bare, per se, it's just the market for Dumba at the exorbitant price Guerin is charging is bare.

I didn’t really care if we got ER, but not doing anything with this cap space means that we downgraded our goalie position this year simply because Guerin mismanaged the relationship. He’s made a habit of that since he’s got here (Staal, Fiala, Suter, Menell).

I don’t know if this math is right, but CapFriendly has us at $26.6M in TDL cap space right now. With Rossi and Addison on the roster it’ll be $19M (their contracts are 29% of overall cap space). We obviously don’t need $19M in cap space at the TDL, so I just don’t see Guerin making these moves for cap.

The big test will be signing Kap again but Fiala sets a bad tone for showing the players we want to win.

I think the players understand the Fiala thing. When it comes to a Kaprizov extension I'm pretty sure it will help if they re-sign Zuccarello.

Nothing says "we're serious about winning" like needing to sign a 37 year old to an extension in order for our star player to re-sign when that 37 year old will be 39.
