Probably going to bridge him anyway.

I'd try to sign the guys who will take long term contracts to long term contracts, bridge the guys you can't. I'd rather pay Boldy 8x8 now than bridge him for 3x6 and then give him 8x11 later.

Free agency hypothetical:

Let's say that a) we had no buyout dead cap right now, and b) we signed Fiala to the deal that he signed with LA. That would've meant that we would've had ~$7M in cap space to work with yesterday. Were there any deals that were signed that you would've taken for this team? Also, let's say that Kulikov/Jost could be traded for picks if necessary, possibly opening up another ~$4M.

Giroux at $6.5M for 3 is an excellent deal, imo.

FA is usually a day full of overpayments and I think yesterday was no exception, but the above deal seems like a steal for the term. Over PPG when he got to Florida and would be a huge upgrade to our PP

With no dead cap we're probably looking at being contenders, I'd probably go after Trochek and Jack Campbell at 10.6 total. I'd not go after Fleury, so we'd have that 3.5 back.

I was gonna list this one but it sounds like he was only going to Ottawa.

Claude Giroux. It's fairly short term, he CAN play center, and it's not a huge cap hit. I think I'd put him with Kaprizov and Zuccarello first, and then if we find out Hartman works best there because he's such a shoot-first guy, then I'd move Giroux down to play with Fiala and Boldy. Either way, I'm sure he'd fit on one of those lines.

Now would he have signed here so cheaply? No idea, but Ottawa is apparently home to him, so maybe not.

Yeah it is, I was a little shocked at this one.

I concur but it’s still a deal I’d have taken.

Not a Campbell fan, and do not think that was a good deal. Has had 1.5 seasons as a #1 and is very average, no proof that he can be a winning goalie.

I'm not in love with the deal, but we would need a better goaltender than Fleury, and I like Campbell here better than Kuemper.

Some tidbits from Russo's live room thing.

- Found out this morning that Nino fired his agent yesterday and hired Walsh. Sounds like he may have overdone it with his ask so the Canes moved on and acquired Pacioretty.
- Didn't get the impression that they've ever been interested in Dylan Strome or Sonny Milano. Could have time for Sam Steel.
- Thinks Dumba would have to be willing to take ~$4.5m on an extension to stay in Minnesota. Also sounds like Guerin's still tentatively shopping him around to gauge interest.
- Other guys that could move if space is needed are Kulikov or Jost.
- The Wild did make a call to Derek Stepan, though it doesn't sound like the interest is all that strong. Just gauging options, I guess.
- Sounds like the team does like Puljujarvi's game overall, though no idea if they'd actually want to trade for him
No mention of the whole Renton turned down Nylander for Dumba thing Russo dropped smh

In the love room Russo did mention that Guerin has quietly started shopping Dumba again. There’s little interest it sounds like. If Dumba’s making 4M this year, I bet he has some decent value. He’s at a big cap number. I don’t doubt that we could get a first for him at the deadline, but right now probably isn’t the time to trade him imo. Especially if you don’t have anything in particular in mind with you’re new 10M cap space cushion.

What the actual f*** though? If he's gonna trade Dumba, then why didn't we do it to sign Fiala....

Because you can't just trade a player away without getting a decent return - otherwise its a move made out of desperation and emotion.

And secondly, not even sure that would be enough to sign Fiala. Would he even want to sign at the price he did or demand a premium with Minnesota?

Hindsight is always 20/20, but Dumba+Kulikov+(Talbot eventually being traded due to re-signing MAF). They could have made it work. Unless the idea is to do a "hockey trade" involving Dumba. Maybe Dumba+ for Horvat or something along those lines.

My interest in Pulj is intensifying. I do wonder if Dumba for Pulj+1st is something Edmonton would consider.

EDM doesn't have the cap for Dumba. Even if they dump Barrie ($4.5m) somewhere for nothing the cap still doesn't work well for them. Only 8 FWDS currently signed and Yamamoto still needs a new contract. $1.3m currently, $4.1m (Klefbom) sitting on LTIR currently, add another $4.5m from dumping Barrie so at best $10m? Dumba + Yamamoto would be $9m+ of that space.

Dumba @ 50%

Not like we are using the cap space on anyone.
