If it came down to a choice between the two at identical contracts, I'll take Malkin over Kessel 10 times out of 10.

Conversely

Kessel is:

- Not that good of a hockey player in his current form
- Never known to be a team player and lazy
- Expensive

Hard pass.

-he scored 55 points on a historically bad offensively Arizona. A point on 25% of their goals.
- I've never seen a report of a teammate complain about him. Only Toronto media.
-Probably not as expensive as he used to be, but that remains to be seen.

And only 8 of those points were goals. Which is about 95% what you want your Phil Kessel to be doing.

I stand by the hard pass.

He scored 52 points and only 8 goals. And don't let the points fool you, he was abysmal. I lost track of how many times I had to say "jesus christ Phil get it together" while watching the games.

Well yeah, I know but at some point it’s time to move on. If we would have signed Malkin to this deal I would have lost it.

I’m 2-3 years they’re gonna be regretting this one badly, imo

It seems like their plan is just to go all in for the next 3 years, the extra term is just to keep the AAV down, kinda like the Parise/Suter contracts.

Pittsburgh sticking to the same geriatric core that hasn’t won a playoff series since 2018 is certainly a decision.
Hey, it stops us from signing Malkin as a mistake.
Meh, at least they've won a couple of Cups in the past 10 years. I'd kill for just one.
Which has no bearing on next season for them or us... the point is, Malkin is done as a player and we don't want him. They want to continue living on those past cups by these has been players? By all means, let them.

What's that got to do with anything?

I think BG uses the money saved in the goalie swap to sign DeLo…I would think that he would move Kulikov, too, if he can and try to get more cap space there, also.

if its at 1m ill be fine with it as long as they understand the need to put him in the press box come playoffs.

I think the Wild will re-sign Dlo with some of the new cap space. KFan this morning acted like Gaudreau is heading to Pitt to try and win a cup with Crosby even if he needs to take less money,

If Merrill's injury is going to keep him out to start the season I don't see why they would now trade Kulikov until having him healthy. Prior to trading Talbot the cap space might be worth it but now they aren't cap strapped so unless there's too good of an offer I'd assume Kulikov stays until they are comfortable with Addison and Merrill is back to healthy.
