Good players really hate playing in Columbus.

Wonder if its Torts?

Idk if that's it. Haven't a lot of good former players said nothing but nice things about him? Yeah he might be a coach that's hard on his players and wants to win but he seems like a good guy off the ice and those are the best kinds of coaches if you've ever played hockey and had a coach like that.

The fact that CBJ was rumoured to have sent out offer sheets in the past (i.e. Marner) likely forced their hand in liquidating Murray/Nutivaara. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a very real threat of a retaliatory offer-sheet.

Looks good on them. Don't expect Dubois to be with that org. long-term - they struggle to retain high-end forwards.

I see a lot of similarities in Torts and Babcock.

Take a mediocre group and get more than anyone could rightfully expect out of the them? They're your guy
Take an excellent group and get tactically perfect but boring winning hockey over the short term? They're your guy
Alienate the shit out of talented hockey players and eventually cause underperformance/departures? They're your guy

Better AAV than I'd have expected on that Dubois contract. It does come at the cost of low term though. I'd say the latter is problematic to the greater extent than the former is ideal. This agreement only just kicks the issue slightly down the road too if he does in fact want to be elsewhere soon enough.

It is curious that Columbus struggles to maintain players. In this particular instance I would guess it was either related to Torts or locker room politics.
I'd say latter. Torts is actually well-liked! I think part of his whole "unhinged" thing is a bit of an act. He likes attention. LOL

Not everyone enjoys playing in small markets, especially when you’re young. Not a lot to do in Columbus

That may be true. Though this seems to be a fairly common occurrence there.

6 million? What is Barzal doing? That would be ridiculous.

Potentially, but depends on the structure. Hed be arbitration eligible at the end of a 3 year bridge deal, and if the final year has a high salary he would need to be qualified at thst number. 3 year bridges here will favor Barzal financially in the longer term.

Would a 3 year deal take Barzal right to UFA? Or would it be his last year of RFA eligibility?

From my look, a 3 year deal would expire on June 30th in 2024 and Barzal turns 27 in May that year... I think that deal would walk him right to free agency.

According to capfriendly, 3 year contract ends with him as an RFA.

1 year RFA with team arbitration
2 year RFA with player arbitration
3 year RFA
4 year UFA

Just not bending over the club that drafted him. You see a bit of that, just not in TO. Not every player wants to squeeze the maximum nickel out of their club

He also does not have leverage. He is negotiating in a pandemic with a GM who historically does not pay young players (often running them to and then losing them early in UFA) and does not have a lot of cap space after overpaying older players. Barzal also hasn't been as good as his rookie year when Tavares was there.

He probably takes a deal similar to Dubois at a higher cap hit. That's not really a good thing for the Islanders, but that is the situation they've put themselves in and they will have more cap space to properly pay Barzal at that point. It's going to end up costing them in the long run though.

How much more than 9 million in cap space do they need?

8 year - 9 million Barzal offersheet... and trade Marner to highest bidder of picks?:sarcasm:

Don't think you can offer 8 years but if you could get him signed for that type of coin you could almost give Marner away and be ahead but is there a team that is willing and has cap space to take that contract without sending money back ? ;)

Say Marner to Wings for Barzal +( 2 x 1st or Lucas Raymond + 2021 1st) + $2M cap space

With COVID, an OS is never going to happen. More likely Lou moves Barzal like the Bruins moved Phil.
