Really quick, can someone explain to me how the greatest captain and leader in Rangers history can only garner 5% of the vote, less than even 'other'? Why the lack of love? Serious question.

Because he has zero head coaching experience?

Because it would be nothing but a Rangers inner circle move like Sather's early days which were always disaster.

Organization needs to step off 94. If Messier is brought in as Torts' replacement, this move to fire him is 1000 times worse than it already is..

No experience. Look at Trottier here and Gretz in PHO. If Messier had been doing good work as an assistant elsewhere, then I'd consider him

Because most of posters here are 20 something and have no idea how great the messiah was. Without him, it would still be 1940 and 73 years and counting.

For one and major reason, lack of coaching at any level.

I think that just about covers it.

And because its the lazy, predictable, "good ol' boys," type of choice, I wouldnt rule it out at all.

Quite frankly I hope the next coach is a guy that more than half of this board has never heard of.

I don't give a **** how good he was. Thats irrelevant. For what its worth, I got into the Rangers in the 1996-1997 season and Messier was my favorite player until he left for VAN. I was estatic when he returned. He was my little kid idol/favorite player type thing.

None of that means he can be a successful coach. None of it means he can't be, either.. but without proper experience I'll pass and hope for someone who I know knows what they are doing.

My age has nothing to do with recognizing how he has 0 coaching experience at any level.

Why isn't Emilio Estevez on there?!

Gordon Bombay FTW!!!

Besides Messier could only be an assistant and that's if and only if Gretzky was coach.

Gotta question one thing about whoever takes over here in NY. Is there anyone out there with sort of a "larger than life" persona that is available? Greatest city in the world, and there are lots of places to hide. Players in manhattan living the life I always felt needed someone to sort of keep them grounded in regards to the nightlife and keep them focused when in the room. For that reason I though Torts/Callahan were a good combination. The results of this team suggest otherwise. I'm not going to change my views though. I don't think a players coach will do well in NY. Yeah they may win a few, maybe get into the second round but I do question anything more than that.

I used to love the idea of Nolan. But not anymore. He's pretty far removed from the game at the NHL level these days.

Messier I am reserved of but to be honest...What's the worst that can happen if Mess came in?

You remember Bryan Trottier? Wayne Gretzky? Solid head coaches there.

This might have been mentioned before, I don't feel like going back 50 pages, but I'm sure there are plenty of reasons Torts was fired. Treatment of players, media, system, but I think the main reason was that he brought Brad Richards here. He wanted him and swore by him. Brad Richards might be washed up and I think Torts tried to distance himself from him by scratching him the last 2 games. I believe that management saw through Tort's scheme. Same thing happened with Perry Pearn. He brought in Redden and got the axe.

What are your thoughts?

A great player doesn't necessarily mean he would be a great coach. Trottier and Gretzky for example.

Being a great player and a great captain doesn't usually translate to success behind the bench...and he has 0 coaching experience

Actually, Messier would be the perfect hire for Glen Sather personally.

No way in hell the fans/media critique the Messiah.

I'm surprised there's not a lot more votes for Ted Nolan. I know it most likely won't happen, but he made a terrible islanders team incredibly difficult to play against several years ago.

Messier could be exactly the coach the Rangers need, or he could be a complete disaster. Lets not take the risk, eh?

Don't be so sure about that, look at the ex-Yankees that managed them, they all took a lot of heat, despite past glory, Yogi, Billy, Lou, etc, NY fans only let you rest on your laurels for just so long.
