Toronto Sports Media Discussion Thread - v6 (2021 Edition)

I don’t question his knowledge, he’s dry and not witty dry. He was a part of terribly unsuccessful leaf front office who seems to sometimes have axes to grind from that time. His and Buttons interactions with Petrillo were the most cringey of a too often bad Leaf Lunch production.

My goodness, see that new Fan 590 lineup? Boy have things turned to crap at that station in just a mere few years.

I feel for Scott MacArthur. Makes the jump from TSN to cover his passion of baseball and the Blue Jays more than he did there by going to the company that owns the team. Got the pre-game show, and was a prime candidate for the post-game show once Wilner was let go. Instead he got relegated to the radio, eventually ending up doing the mornings, which I’m sure he didn’t sign up for. And, what, not even two years later all that’s gone, along with the Blue Jays dream.

Rogers sure has no clue, let alone any empathy.

All this changeover, all the time, probably tough to build an audience and a connection with people. I remember when the FAN Line-up would stay the same for years at a time. I rarely listen to it now, usually have a podcast on the go or the TV on in the background, but none of what's in the new line-up interests me all that much.

They had an all-star lineup with Brady & Walker in the mornings, Blair doing the rest of the morning and Blue Jays chatter at noon, Tim & Sid from 1 to 4, and then McCown's PrimeTime from 4 to 7. Now that's the type of lineup you should aspire to put together.

Did they dump Scottie Mac for JD Buttkiss ?? Followed by 3 hours of baseball talk? Nick Kypreos drive home? Unless i'm reading that wrong. I can't believe they would advertise that.

Good God . What are they thinking ? Other than maybe Brunt and Ennis the rest of the revamp is a huge step backwards . How do you build an audience when you keep totally changing your lineup every 6 months . Total Gong Show .
 
As an outsider (living in Finland, fan of Colorado and NYR), I do like to listen to some of Toronto radio shows as podcasts. Overdrive is king, not really a fan of the other TSN 1050 stuff. Lead Off was pretty much the only thing I would listen from 590, and that's because of Scotty Mac (Ziggy was not good, sry). TSN should hire Scott back, they have open slots with First Up and Leafs Lunch don't they?

A shame Ray is not doing his daily hits with Overdrive anymore, but they have more than adequate replacement in house: Mike Johnson. Hint hint Overdrive producers, daily hits from MJ and you can almost stop missing Ferraro.

Rogers sports division has been very poorly run. Starting with the acquisition of the NHL rights they have screwed up almost every talent decision. Got rid of the #1 radio personality and killed their afternoon drive show. Hired GS and began to destroy the value of the HNIC brand. Made the HNIC presentation look like a dogs breakfast. Ruined their highly rated 1st intermission segment by trying to out-woke everyone. Failed at launching a Sunday Night Hockey brand. Got rid of guys like Kypper and McLean who have personality. I have no idea what they are doing now with The Fan in Toronto. Lost key insiders.

Just an absolute gong show.

Blake Murphy is one of the top basketball analysts in the country, but I'm not sure about his creds in other sports. Forfar is a former hockey pro, but I've never heard of her until yesterday either.

Woof, Brady and Walker were atrocious. One of them would only talk about wine, the other tried to make bad jokes, neither guy had any sort of depth of knowledge on any subject, and they were annoying to boot. Ennis and Bunkis were a breath of fresh air. As for McCown, he was on auto-pilot for about a decade...but he was good when he was engaged. He has a podcast now where he gets very good guests.

Don't get me wrong -- I absolutely loathed Greg Brady. Can't stand him with any ounce of my body. A pure condescending know-it-all. Walker I was indifferent to.

But at least they were engaging, and despite their characteristic flaws, they were knowledgable on a broad range of sports. Were they my favourite? No. But at least I'd tune in and listen until I got fed up. It's more than I can say about any of the current lineup.

Scotty Mac is still with the station, according to his Twitter account. I'm sure his not being on Jays broadcasts this year is probably Covid related.
 
Jeff was praising Bunting on the good start, and Noodles then said "but but but" and before he could make his point, Jeff smirks and says "here we go".
Jeff and Hayes know Noodles is anti leaf, and at this point, they just make fun of how much Noodles gets triggered. Hayes was smiling too.

I heard it on the car radio and loved every second of it! The "here we go" was perfect and threw Noodles and his rest-of-Canada routine totally off.

I get that sometimes Leafs fans need to slow their roll and some times Jeff and Hayes get carried away and Noodles brings balance but his anti leaf everything is so pathetic at times that he just has really bad takes. Like I think he said one time that Scheifele and Connor were better than Matthews and Marner.

Who is this Al’s brother? I heard him on a mid morning show as a analyst guest and he was referred to as “Al’s brother”!

who is this guy and who is Al?
