Possibly the worst take yet. Get bent Biron. Immediately launches in to, "you can see he went for the shoulder and Greig put his arm up"

followed by...

"But this is just a big no no" about Greig's slapshot.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills watching this shit. Do you mouthwash after you gargle on their balls Biron? Jesus H Christ, this is a former player, that didn't even play for the Leafs. Is this shit literally written in to their contracts or something? Just beyond awful for a take on this. Shameful really.

A DELIBERATE CROSS CHECK TO THE HEAD THAT CONNECTED, AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER, IS THE ONLY THING THEY SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT.

Guys can dance around like they're Theo Fleury scoring the winner, but a clapper in to an empty netter broke the code? Go cover for Hockey Canada a little more you blokes.

He’s just not over getting beat up by Ray Emery.

He is getting 6 games minimum.

That is the most recent precedent set with Perron.

The situation is almost exactly the same.
  1. It was not a hockey play.
  2. There was no provocation. No expectation of physical retribution.
  3. The player attacked was not seriously injured.
In both cases, these weren't hockey plays. A hockey play would be like if the two of them were battling in front of the net and Reilly cross-checked Greig in the face as part of that sequence. The whistle was blown. Reilly was not engaged with Greig.

Point 2 might be disputed, but being a hot dog on a goal isn't provocation. Provocation would be turning to Reilly and saying come fight me. I don't even think anybody would have thought twice about the emphatic empty net goal.

The big factor that I think will get him more than 6 is going to be when the penalty took place. We're talking about seconds left in a game. There needs to be a very strong punishment because the incentive for a player to injure a rival with seconds left in the game would otherwise be too high. Imagine you're in a series with the Oilers, and you know as a third liner you can cross check McDavid to the head with 5 seconds left in a losing effort and only get suspended a few games. The penalty doesn't matter because the game is already over.

If a player or goon knows he is going to lose 10-20 games worth of pay if he cross checks McDavid in the head, he's not going to do it. 20 games is a lot of money and can possibly have major negative ramifications for a player who is fighting for a spot in the league. If a player knows they can make themselves famous by taking out McDavid and only lose 4 or less games, of course they are going to do it.

Bettman also has tried for decades to curb the prison rec basketball league vibe of pro hockey. Why is there a 10 game penalty for a goon jumping off the bench and fighting a player, when the end result (a hockey fight) doesn't command a 10 game suspension if both players are already on the ice? It's all about incentives and curbing bad behaviour. Goons spend more time on the bench because they usually aren't trusted to play big minutes. Preventing them from jumping over lowers fights and big line brawls. This is a scenario where if player safety is going to need to come down had to combat the high incentive that players would have to head hunt and attack stars with seconds left in a losing game.

I was baffled last night in the thread that so many Leafs fans thought he would only get 1 or 2 games. Context matters. A cross check to the had in a hockey play might be a fine or a short suspension. The non-hockey play and timing of the act are what matters most. 6 games is the floor, and if he doesn't get more than 6 it will be made clear that not having any prior violations of player safety saved this from being a 10-20 game suspension.

I'm sure Marty has probably taken shots at empty nets as a goalie before.

Surely that should also be considered an insult and justification for getting his head cracked open?

Was there and saw it live - so awesome. I've seen him and Peters tell the story since and in their minds they owned Ray that night. Biron is lucky he could leave the ice under his own power and Emery was loving the tilt with Peters.

I’m jealous of that. I’ve got that Emery smile etched in my brain prior to the fight. He was one of my favourite players to come through Ottawa. It’s too bad he was too noisy for the city. A little too head of his time, really.

Not gonna lie, taking a leak between periods in a Sens jersey was...uncomfortable.

It will be so funny if they miss the playoffs because of this. Instantly into the Alfie fake stick toss category, which still lives rent free in their heads decades later

It would be funny if the Reilly suspension helped the Leafs miss the playoffs. I don't know if the Islanders, Devils or Penguins could squeeze them out of a playoff seed, but it sure would be fun if it happened. Leaf nation would implode.

Oops - I see someone has posted the same thought.

Just from a financial perspective if Reilly gets suspended for 5 games. Is that about $400,000?

It's oddly and pervasively exactly what Toronto wants. Take the spotlight away from being beaten by a team much below you in the standings, being outed as a crap team. Takes some heat off their lame coach. Takes some heat off their marshmallow soft team (we're pretty soft too, ngl).

Then when reilly gets suspended they can claim that it will galvanize them on their way to getting beaten in round 1 of the playoffs.

It's a bunch of defelections that take pressure off the team as a whole, who, imo, suck good and hard.

May all the leafs empty net goals against be 5 foot clappers from here on out. Hope the rest of the league seize this opportunity to troll the laffs over and over.
Could be just a way celebrate the win.
Decades ago it was in bad taste to do today's (goal or win) celebrations.
