Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

Lol, they beat the Leafs due to poor goaltending. What were the shots, 32-23? Let me guess, those were 23 character shots :sarcasm:

Usually a bad team will beat a better team if that better team is getting .826 goaltending.
Goaltending is part of the game...as is defensive play. As far as shots on goal go, it's quality over quantity. The Leafs held a 5-4 penalty advantage that game...no excuses there.

Usually an overall character team will prevailing over a shallow team that's soft, weak, fragile and heartless...because character teams have the willpower to sacrifice to succeed that shallow teams lack.

Their defense and goaltending is injured.

Muzzin/Benn/Liljegren/Murray all on LTIR already.

Kallgren is not an NHL goaltender, he's giving them a .857 save percentage playing powerhouses like San Jose & Arizona. Everytime they have to play him, it's a loss, especially with an injured D.

They got 3D injured, not much choice.

In fairness, Murray was basically on LTIR when the leafs acquired him

The team projected by many to be the clear favorite in Atlantic seems to be suffering a major performance crisis.

Their offense is underwhelming, Matthews has one goal this season, Marner is not playing his best, many defensive mistakes, Murray is injured, Kallgren is pretty mediocre.

Samsonov and Nylander look good though.

Will the Leafs rebound in style and go on a winning streak?
Is it surprising? I don't think it is surprising at all. Leafs just got completely overrated by media for clicks.

Somehow ranked the best team in the league with those goalies.

These threads are getting old. every bad game the regular crew that shits on the Leafs every chance they can come out in full force

They are a very unlikeable team I mean even their own fans are turning on them , rightfully so they seem like entitled babies who don't show up when it matters.
New aged muskoka 5, except now its not the players that dont want to leave its the fans/GM that cant let go of the new 5

I’m not sure it’s surprising. They downgraded their depth and goaltending and three of their four top D are well on the wrong side of 30 years old. I also don’t think it’s realistic to expect Matthews to replicate a Hart, Rocket and Lindsay year.
Some regression was to be expected.
And it's still way too early..............the 20-25 game mark is more of an accurate gage in most cases.
But as in years past, the goalies are a huge concern once again.

I don't think it's surprising, the team is weaker than last year, I said it in the offseason.

And media and sports betting love us for some reason, I just went on OLG and it still had Toronto ranked 2nd best odds to win the freaking stanley cup, how..HOW i ask you is this team ranked 2nd to win the cup?

My point is literally proven right there, it was Wednesday when i checked but still.

Samsonov has been the only highlight and he was a massive gamble, not some genius move, if they knew what they had in him they never would have went for Murray.

The boys will get going and win a lot of games at some point, but regardless I do not see a cup winning roster. The D is too suspect and the depth scoring to produce in the post season isn't there, not to mention if the boys don't show up like now there is zero chance.

After seeing the Murray and Jarnkrok additions this summer spending what little cap space they had on those useless players I was shocked. Time for a new GM.

Yeah, you're right - everyone predicted injuries to have no impact on Boston.

Still a better record than last year, they'll be okay.

They're 4-1 with Samsonov in net (only lost to the Golden Knights). What you're not realizing is the Leafs have to play their #4G because both their #2G (Murray) and #3G (Woll) are both injured.. and the number 4 goalie is putting up an .857 save percentage, not going to win many games with that.. in fact, he hasn't won any.

They also have to play 7th and 8th d-men due to injuries.
How is any of that a surprise though. Murray has a history of being injured and Muzzin was injured last season.

Sad, frustrating but 100% accurate statement. There needs to be a culture change

It's not a small sample size that's the problem, it's the lack of effort and intensity. There's losing games, losing to bad teams and then there's playing like you don't give a shit about winning, just collecting a paycheck.

The Leafs achilles heal will be there defense and goaltending. Muzzin is basically toast and they have no one to pick up where he left off (a few years ago) when he was a surefire top-3 dman.

Giordano is a dinosaur and Holl is a complete liability. Sandin and Lilly are unproven. That leaves us with Rielly and Brodie. Leafs have a massive hole on D and probably are worse in net.

Seems like they start slow, then try and turn it up in the third when down.
I do notice Matthews finishing his checks a lot more this year.

The defence and goaltending is atrocious this year. But even if that was fixed, the biggest problem with this team is the Core and its leadership. Zero heart. Soft as baby poop.

Matthews/Marner when given the opportunity to take it the next level and up the clutch factor to maybe finally win a playoff series will disappear.

They look 10 ply this year. We need a Tom Wilson type and just don't have one.
Tom Wilson isn't fixing the goaltending or defense. Leafs are soft but that's not the core issue.

Leafs could use an Arber Xhekaj type of dman. A more proven one of course...

Pretty much, they start off slow fall behind and then start playing catch up. If they can just start the game with that intensity they'd be a great team but f***in hell.

They have a better record than last season through the same number of games.
As already stated, the quality of the teams they lost against is drastically different.

Apples and oranges.

Losing 3 of their first 8 games against teams predicted to finish 32nd, 31st and 30th? Only the Leafs.

I know, it was badly worded on my part. I thought the implication was clear, but apparently not. Probably a result of English being my third strongest language? :dunno:
No problem, and I do sympathise (from a French-Canadian).
