He's not a generational player and isn't anywhere near as good as McDavid, so no.
As a fan of neither team, I can objectively say the numbers don't support your statement

Matthews 262 Goals in 417 Games vs Connor 248 Goals in 496 Games.

Connor has played 79 more games and has 14 less goals, from a pure goal scorer standpoint, Matthews is better at it than McDavid.

Dubas is a terrible GM....Shanny bet on the wrong horse

he signed Marner to a bloated contract, didn't get Matthew signed for 8 years...and signed Tavares, when the last thing they needed was more offense (ironically seems to be one of their better players this year)

and because of these signings, he's had to watch Hyman , Campbell and Mikheyev sign elsewhere and trade Kadri

he's downgraded the forward position, severely downgraded the goaltending position and the defense is below average...they are thin everywhere and the only solution is to find a taker for Tavares (NMC so I doubt he leaves) or Marner (massive ticket, good luck trying to find a team with the cap space)...and use that money to round out the roster a bit better
I didn't even mention the draft picks he's given up lol
I can't remember a GM who has done less with more. He was gifted 3 stars on ELC's, a ton of cap space, a deep prospect pool, and boatloads of picks.

Now he has a capped out, aging team, with no depth, and is maxed out on contracts. No idea how he has a job.

My rebuttal is not a dig on Connor, both Matthews and McDavid are exceptional and fun to watch talents.

OP suggesting Connor is tiers above Austin when Austin is better than Connor at finding the back of the net is simply disingenuous.

But if you take away the 4 best players across the board, this team is one of the worst. They have zero depth, a brutal bottom 6, terrible old tired D and no goaltending.
I know it's early in the year but go look at Samsonov's stat line. Goaltending has not been a problem with him between the pipes. Bottom 6 lacks identity and has left much to be desired, and yeah there are some pylons on D. Overall though I like Mo, Brodie, and Gio; Sandin has shown some good moments.

Connor is tiers above though. Even if Matthews scores slightly more goals. He gets dummied in every other category compared to Connor.

The fact that Matthews is not a generational player or close to McDavid doesn’t change.

You know this because you won’t list the chasm in those two stats.
Nobody in their right mind would take Matthews over McDavid.

I'm enjoying the Leafs start to the season as much as anyone, but Auston Matthews is likely to end up as one of the top 5-10 goal scorers of all time. He is a pretty special player.

They've got the big four forwards, and then a bunch of guys who wouldn't have a profile pic in NHL 23.

Matthews knows he’s gone after next season and he looks a bit off

It's not disingenuous at all because it's true that McDavid is a much better player.

Just because Matthews is better at a single aspect doesn't make the statement false anymore than saying Crosby is a much better player than Kovalchuk even though Kovalchuk had more 50 goal seasons and was arguably a better goal scorer.

Tavares should be traded but unfortunately because of his no move contract, Nylander will likely pay the price for it and be shipped out.

Selfish, at least you had a win. Kallgren is winless so far against the powerhouses of SJ, Arizona, and now Anaheim.

"Selfish" is the new "grateful"?

And how exactly did that non-NHL goalie end up being the last option?

Great planning to trade for a $4.5+M often-injured goalie, while the first replacement is also often injured.

It’s disingenuous to ignore other factors beyond goal scoring to make it appear as if Matthews is close to McDavid.
